Stabilizing
the system.
The vulnerability of the financial system
still is an extremely hot topic in the
financial world. Regulators are trying
to eliminate the weakest links in the
system; the role of (central) banks and
supervisors have all been questioned and
judged in depth, while now the focus
has been shifted to other weak links in
the system. Outrageous proposals have
been introduced by various politicians.
This Fiducie will cover various aspects
such as the inevitable urgency and
potential impact of the new regulatory
proposals.
53
This edition starts with a contribution from economist Heleen Mees. In her article she
argues that the current financial crisis is not directly caused by regulatory oversight
failure. Moreover she explains the role of emerging nation China in the crisis. Research
of professor Leen Paape and Joost van Buuren provides us insight on the impact of
the work of accountants on companies’ balance sheets. In our interview, Professor
Van den Brink argues that the weakest link in the financial system is the absence of
sufficient and appropriate penalties for excessive risk-taking in the banking sector.
Professor Wallage discusses the potential impact of recent regulatory proposals on the
audit markets. Hans Moerman expects a strategic game in the private equity industry
and posits that there are emerging opportunities for private equity firms. Finally,
Casper de Vries, Program Director Risk Management of the Duisenberg School of
Finance answers this edition’s themed questions.
Secondly, I would like to announce that from this moment on, Fiducie will be in hands
of Claire Nooij. I am confident that, with her profound financial knowledge, she will
be an enrichment for our team.
This edition is the second Fiducie this year, implying that we are already halfway. We
can now excite you by letting you know that the next theme is: Europe in Distress
– Managing risks during and after the sovereign debt crisis, which will also be the
theme of the FSA Conference 2012. This major event will be held on the 26th of April
at ‘Concertgebouw Amsterdam’.
I would like to conclude by wishing you a year full of success and wealth.
