some putting etiquette tips by mike williams
Approach the flagstick and take hold of it, standing at
arm’s length. Be aware of the different players’ putting
lines, making sure that you are not walking across or
standing in anyone else’s putting line.
When play of the hole is completed, retrieve the flagstick
and replace it in the cup. When replacing the pin,
be careful not to bang the bottom of the flagstick against
the sides of the hole - that can cause turf damage.
Make sure that the flagstick is standing upright and not
leaning to one side or another.
And with that, you’ve successfully completed the tasking
of tending the flagstick.
A few reminders about do’s and don’ts:
• When walking to or away from the pin, and when
standing next to the pin to tend it, be careful not to
walk through anyone’s putting line.
• Stand still and quietly so as not to distract the player
for whom you are tending the flagstick.
• Don’t bend the flagstick or pull it toward you; keep it
upright to avoid the chances of damaging the rim of
the hole.
• One more caution about where you stand: be careful
of your shadow. Stand in a position so that your shadow
is not falling across the putting line of the player
for whom you are tending the flag.
• On windy days, the flag might be flapping in the
breeze, making noise. You can eliminate this possible
distraction by holding the flag against the flagstick as
you tend the pin.
