“‘I have very high hopes for Chica B Z’”
Two years ago, Swiss top rider Martin Fuchs and
his sponsor Adolfo Juri purchased the now eightyear-old
mare Chica B Z in the Dutch Sport Horse
Sales. Although the purchase of Chica B Z was a
somewhat spontaneous decision, Fuchs could not
be happier with the development of this Canturano
daughter. He believes the mare has a great future
ahead of her.
“The purchase of Chica B Z is actually a very funny
story,” Fuchs begins. “My sponsor, Adolfo Juri, and
I were present at the Dutch Sport Horse Sales and
tried four horses. During the auction we started
bidding on these horses, but unfortunately we
couldn’t buy any of them. So we were obviously
very disappointed.”

“Mr. Juri already owned Dino and had purchased
him through Dutch Sport Horse Sales. He brought
Dino into our stables and because he was such
a good horse, we went back to look for another
good horse at the Dutch Sport Horse Sales. Dino
was sold to the USA and has already jumped some
1.60m Grand Prix with the Irish rider, Captain Brian
Cournane,” Fuchs tells.
But then Chica B Z entered the ring as the last
horse in the auction. “We hadn’t noticed Chica B
Z before, but when she came in, Mr. Juri said: ‘This
one looks nice as well.’ I thought the same thing,
and we decided to buy her,” Fuchs tells. Although
they thought she was a talented horse, they did
not immediately think she would become the
horse she is today. “We thought she was a nice
horse, but she was very green at that moment;
maybe she was one of the greenest horses of the
auction. We started jumping her in small classes
to give her experience, and I could feel she had all
the quality. Although we didn’t notice her at first,
she has turned out to be possibly the best horse of
the auction that year,” Fuchs smiles.
Because of the great success Fuchs has had
with the horses purchased at the Dutch Sport
Horse Sales, he continues to return. “Last year,
I wasn’t there, but my father was there; and this
year, I’m planning on going again. I don’t go to
too many auctions, but what’s excellent about
DSHS is that literally every horse in the auction
is a nice horse. They’re well trained, and all of
them are good jumpers - of course some better
than others, but there are only nice horses in the
collection,” Fuchs concludes.
This year, Chica B Z stepped up to the bigger CSI5*
shows, and so far, she is handling them very well.
She jumped clear rounds in Hamburg, Treffen and
Aachen; and she jumped outstandingly in her first
1.50m at CHIO Rotterdam. “I think she’s a horse
with quality, and I have very high hopes for her.
She’s extremely careful, and now she has more
