primary care per year. Out of these were 51% reported as being ambulancemissions, 36% were transport of health staff and 13% were transport of patients. There are clearly most activity in the northern health region, but quite spread allalong the Norwegian coast line. Three out of four boats used for health relatedmissions are owned by private companies, while one out of four are owned bymunicipalities. The ambulance boats/boats used in out-of-hours primary care havemore medical equipment and a higher manning with health workers than thecombination boats.InterpretationThe boats in use in Norwegian out-of-hours primary care are mainly the same asused in the boat ambulance service. Only a small part of the boats has a central rolein out-of-hours primary care. It is difficult to clearly separate the different roles of theboats, and it is therefore important to have the perspectives of both the municipalitiesand the health regions in mind while evaluating the services. The northern healthregion has a high level of activity compared to the rest of the country. This isprobably best explained by both geographical and demographic differences. Thenorthern health region covers large distances and a decentralized population.8
