<strong>Fjell</strong>posten12SULEBU – ON THE EDGE OFJOTUNHEIMENBy: Sheri BastienA number of factors combined to make this weekend trip fantastic! We started out on Friday(17. Oktober) morning, arriving mid-afternoon. The clear, blue skies made for ideal hikingweather. It was just a short, but beautiful 2 hour hike to Sulebu (1330m), where we pitchedthe tents and prepared dinner.After quite a long sleep in, we wokeup to some foggy weather.Fortunately, over the course ofbreakfast the fog began to burn offand the day started to lookpromising. We geared up with theintention to climb Suletinden, whichis 1780m, and was frosted withsnow. During the hike we werefortunate enough to spot ptarmigan(noe sånt som rype på norsk), andsnowshoe hare. When we finallymade it to the top of Suletinden, Erikgranted me the wish of hearing theNorwegian national anthem, and we had some lunch while enjoying the view.The weather was constantly shifting, so atcertain points we were afforded superbviews into the ranges of northernJotunheimen, where such as Hurunganeand Gjendealpene could be spotted in thedistance. There was a fair amount ofsnow which made the descent lots of fun!Sliding down sections of the slopegleefully on ourbutts proved tobe both excitingand occasionally a wee bit dangerous! The look on Knut's face as heslid to a stop caked with snow on his nose and glasses was hilarious,while I shredded my pants and skin on an exposed section of rock.Too much fun!We took a slightly different route on the way down, and arrivedsafely back to camp and settled in for another great dinner. Thatnight was particularly special, as we were treated to a short show ofaurora borealis, whose green lights danced above us while welistened to an explanation from the physicists in the group about thephenomenon! The clear sky and -17 degree temperatures were enough to tempt Knut, Erik,
<strong>Fjell</strong>posten13Thomas and I to brave the cold and sleep outside in our fjellduka's. The night sky wasfantastic!Sunday proved to be yet anotherstunning day with clear skies,crunchy snow and another stunningview of the surrounding ranges.The hike back was uneventful, thatis until the end when Trygve andKnut decided to go for a dip in thelake and we were shocked with thesight of Knut in his birthday suit!!!All in all, the trip was absolutelyperfect for this time of year. Goodcompany, a great hike, superb foodand weather all conspired to makethe weekend an excellent one. Many thanks to Knut for the planning that went into making thetrip a success!
