“Nule die sine linea”
O futuro é precário, não há dúvida. Entre
previsões pessimistas de Blade Runner e
cômico-otimistas nos Jetsons, por pouco
a ficção científica não acerta em cheio.
Mas ao invés de veículos voadores, temos
a informação lasciva nas redes sociais e
no lugar das cidades suspensas, tratados
ecológicos não cumpridos. Não há robôs
serviçais, mas nós mesmos.
Chegamos em 2010 e não há nada mais natural
que a Gambiologia - a ciência do improviso
aliada às técnicas eletrônico-digitais. É a
celebração da gambiarra por postura crítica,
pela ausência de recursos ou simplesmente
como opção estética. E a tecnologia, por
vício ou como combustível - e porque não
há mais volta. A gambiarra é uma forma de
hackeamento e também uma atitude política.
Esta exposição apresenta uma seleção de
obras em que o deslocamento funcional, a
reciclagem, a valorização do obsoleto, o uso
de materiais alternativos e uma outra maneira
de se pensar a tecnologia materializam-se
em formas mutantes, plurais e provocativas.
Há aqui um rompimento dos limites entre o
industrial e o artesanal, a arte e o design,
o artífice e o curador. Formas de arte
que alimentam-se dos próprios restos, os
deglutem e nos jogam de volta. Gambiarras
dos mais diversos graus de improviso e com
decrescentes níveis de tecnologia.
Do refinamento estético de Vogel aos excessos
do Gambiociclo. Do funcionalismo high/
lowtech do Eyewriter a prismas iluminados.
Da sutileza de taças de cristal e gotas
d’água projetadas a um polvo gigante e (des)
afinado. Uma câmera de vigilância que perde
foco e função. Eletrodomésticos que ganham
vida, balançam: seres de sobrenome Arduino.
Sons que vêm do papelão, da madeira, da
luz. A irreverência de um encontro entre
furadeiras e um relógio esquisito, mas
genial. Ferro líquido amplificando ruídos
de uma sociedade fluida. Será o futuro
infinitamente hightech ou simplesmente uma
celebração da obsolescência?

“Nule die sine linea”
The future is precarious, no doubt. Among the
pessimistic forecasts of Blade Runner and the comicoptimistic
ones of The Jetsons, science fiction
almost hit it. But instead of flying vehicles, we
have lascivious information on social networks and
in place of floating cities, we have unfulfilled
environmental treaties. There are no domestic
robots, only ourselves.
We reached 2010 and there is nothing more natural
than Gambiologia** (Kludgeology) - the science of
improvisation combined with electronic-digital
techniques. It is the celebration of gambiarra*
(kludge) through critical attitude, lack of
resources or simply, as an aesthetic option. And
also technology - as fuel or addiction - and because
there is no turning back. Kludging is a form of
hacking and also a political attitude.
This exhibition presents a selection of works in
which the functional shift, recycling, revival
of the obsolete, the use of alternative materials
and another way of thinking about technology have
materialized themselves into mutant, plural and
provocative forms. Here, there is a breakdown
of boundaries between the industrial and the
handcrafted, the art and the design, the creator
and the curator. Art forms that feed on their own
remains, digest them and throw them back to us.
Kludges from various degrees of improvisation and
with decreasing levels of technology.
From Vogel’s aesthetic refinement to Gambiociclo’s
excesses. From Eyewriter’s high/low tech
functionalism to illuminated prisms. From the
subtlety of crystal goblets and projected water
drops to a giant in (out-of) tune octopus. A
surveillance camera that loses focus and function.
Household appliances that come to life, that swing:
Arduino creations. Sounds coming from cardboard,
wood, light. The irreverence of a meeting between
powerdrills and a weird but brilliant watch. Liquid
iron amplifying noises of a fluid society. The future
will be infinitely high tech or simply a celebration
of obsolescence?

* ‘Gambiarra’ is a Brazilian – but not only -
cultural practice which refers to ‘solving problems
in alternative ways’ or ‘giving unusual functions
to objects.’ There is no exact translation in
English so we use ‘kludge’ as the most appropriate
one: ‘a workaround, a quick-and-dirty solution, a
makeshift, a clumsy or inelegant, yet effective,
solution to a problem, typically using parts that
are cobbled together’ (from Wikipedia).
** Gambiologia (Kludgeology) is a neologism which
refers to a mix between kludges and technology. It
can also be understood as ‘the science of kludging’.
