A <strong>História</strong> <strong>do</strong> <strong>Cocktail</strong><br />

Por muito estranho que possa parecer a origem da famosa palavra cocktail encontra-se<br />

envolta em mistério. Referin<strong>do</strong>-se a uma mistura de bebidas alcoólicas, açúcar, água e<br />

bitters, a palavra cocktail aparece assim escrita pela primeira vez numa publicação<br />

americana de 1806.<br />

A guerra da independência <strong>do</strong>s esta<strong>do</strong>s uni<strong>do</strong>s da América decorreu a par <strong>do</strong>s tempos<br />

conturba<strong>do</strong>s da queda da monarquia em França e <strong>do</strong> fervilhar da revolução francesa,<br />

cujos partidários elegeram a imagem de um galo como símbolo da alvorada <strong>do</strong> novo<br />

regime liberta<strong>do</strong>r <strong>do</strong> povo. Ora conta-se que num belo dia desse conturba<strong>do</strong>r perío<strong>do</strong><br />

na história da América, a <strong>do</strong>na de um botequim chamada Betsy Flanagan preparou um<br />

apetitoso cozinha<strong>do</strong> com galos(cock), rouba<strong>do</strong>s a um partidário <strong>do</strong>s colonialistas<br />

ingleses. Para celebrar essa pequena façanha, Betsy decorou os copos a serem usa<strong>do</strong>s<br />

no festim com penas das caudas(tail), das aves. Durante o repasto, convida<strong>do</strong>s<br />

franceses, simpatizantes <strong>do</strong> espírito de libertação americano e certamente”toca<strong>do</strong>s”,<br />

pelas bebidas brindaram à saúde da patriótica anfitriã com repetidas salvas de “Vive<br />

Le <strong>Cocktail</strong>!” (“Vivam as caudas <strong>do</strong>s galos!”).<br />

Claro que são diversas as versões sobre a origem <strong>do</strong> <strong>Cocktail</strong><br />

e todas elas pretendem ser verdadeiras.<br />

Esta versão é tão "verdadeira" como outra qualquer.<br />

Mas se a lenda <strong>do</strong> aparecimento <strong>do</strong>s cocktails se perde na bruma <strong>do</strong>s tempos,<br />

estes aqui estão para encantar to<strong>do</strong>s os aprecia<strong>do</strong>res de bebidas.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cocktail</strong><br />

It is strange that the origin <strong>of</strong> the famous and mysterious word cocktail as a term for<br />

mixed drinks cannot be precisely established. <strong>The</strong> word cocktail was first defined in print<br />

as a mixture <strong>of</strong> spirits, sugar, water and bitters in an American magazine in 1806. <strong>The</strong><br />

term was certainly not then in common use. Nor <strong>do</strong>es the reference preclude its prior<br />

regional usage.<br />

One popular notion is that during the American war <strong>of</strong> independence, a tavern keeper<br />

called Betsy Flanagan, whose premises were frequented by Lafayette’s as well<br />

Washington’s <strong>of</strong>ficers, once prepared a meal <strong>of</strong> chickens she filched from a pro-British<br />

neighbour. To celebrate this victory she decorated glasses used at the feast with feathers<br />

from the bird. Her French customers toasted her with cries <strong>of</strong> “Vive Le <strong>Cocktail</strong>!”.<br />

Certainly there were many different versions about the name <strong>of</strong> cocktail.<br />

This version it’s so real than other.<br />

But if the legend <strong>of</strong> the name cocktail was lost in the mist <strong>of</strong> the times,<br />
