Forgetting Basic Knowledge in Portuguese and Math<strong>em</strong>atics:<br />

Some Unexpected Data with University Stu<strong>de</strong>nts<br />

Abstract<br />

Basic school knowledge, <strong>de</strong>spite its function and importance, is not invulnerable to<br />

forgetting. A short questionnaire was applied to a sample of 109 university stu<strong>de</strong>nts asking<br />

th<strong>em</strong> to perform basic arithmetic operations such as multiplication and division and to<br />

answer questions on two major Portuguese literature masterpieces "Os Lusía<strong>da</strong>s" and<br />

“Mensag<strong>em</strong>”, consi<strong>de</strong>red to be well learned in el<strong>em</strong>entary and high school. Results<br />

indicated unexpected poor performance on arithmetic operations and dissimilar results in<br />

Portuguese literature. A second questionnaire revealed that stu<strong>de</strong>nts perception on<br />

arithmetic performance was bearable and justifiable. Although it cannot be proved that<br />

basic school contents were permanently forgotten, some suggestions are consi<strong>de</strong>red to<br />
