From an inexpressive participation in the Brazilian market in 1997, the
Spanish group Santander conquered in the year 2000 the position of the third
biggest private bank in Brazil. Several labor problems were identified. The bank
adopts damaging policies to the workers organization. There is little inclination to
direct negotiation with the union and limits to the free access of unionists to
employees. The study reveals that Santander Bank reproduces the unjust conditions
of gender and race existing in the Brazilian labor market and, more specifically in
the banking sector. Around 61% of the interviewed people state that there is
discrimination in the company. The most mentioned form was against Blacks,
followed by discrimination against women and handicapped. There are signs showing
that there are barriers to impede the ascension of women and Blacks to higher
positions. Although it respects the childhood and adolescence rights, the Santander
bank has an expressionless social action for fighting child labor and promoting child
rights.
