Bem-vindos!<br />

Mensagem do Director<br />

Esta é a primeira edição do MedCINECascais Film <strong>Festival</strong>, festival<br />

<strong>de</strong> cinema que preten<strong>de</strong> realçar a qualida<strong>de</strong> e rigor <strong>de</strong> certas<br />

produções cinematográficas no contexto das ciências da saú<strong>de</strong>.<br />

A criação <strong>de</strong> um novo festival <strong>de</strong> cinema é sempre uma aventura sobre<br />

o <strong>de</strong>sconhecido, mas este é um “nicho” temático que, apesar <strong>de</strong><br />

largamente tratado em centenas <strong>de</strong> filmes e documentários, nunca<br />

foi isolado como tema a valorizar e premiar.<br />

Um festival <strong>de</strong> cinema é, como o realça De Valck (1), um “local<br />

<strong>de</strong> passagem” obrigatório, terminologia que associa a estrutura <strong>de</strong><br />

configuração <strong>de</strong>stes eventos à noção <strong>de</strong> “rito <strong>de</strong> passagem” introduzida<br />

em 1909 pelo antropólogo Arnold van Gennep para marcar<br />

um momento <strong>de</strong> “legitimação cultural”. De facto, o afastamento<br />

temporário das produções dos seus circuitos comerciais, o conjunto<br />

ritualístico das mostras, e as cerimónias <strong>de</strong> entrega dos prémios,<br />

são fenómenos que contribuem para o posicionamento dos filmes<br />

(e dos seus realizadores) na cultura contemporânea, dando-lhes o<br />

reconhecimento, não só estético mas também social, que merecem.<br />

Os festivais temáticos <strong>de</strong> cinema têm uma programação consistente<br />

e “especializada”, pelo que constituem um espaço <strong>de</strong> privilégio<br />

para todos aqueles que, oriundos <strong>de</strong> qualquer região do mundo, têm<br />

uma voz sobre <strong>de</strong>terminado assunto, e preten<strong>de</strong>m difundi-la pelo<br />

mundo globalizado. Esperamos, pois, que todos os novos talentos e<br />

autores se possam encontrar em Cascais para nos focalizar sobre a<br />

saú<strong>de</strong> e a doença na vivência do dia-a-dia dos povos.<br />

Num filme encontramos, através da mão específica <strong>de</strong> cada realizador,<br />

um conteúdo representativo da socieda<strong>de</strong>, com os seus modos<br />

diferentes <strong>de</strong> acção-reacção, as suas ambivalências e incoerências,<br />

e as suas variações no tempo revelando as i<strong>de</strong>ologias dominantes<br />

em cada época. É por isso que, entre o real e o imaginário, o filme<br />

envolve o espectador, integrando-o como actor, num fluxo psíquico<br />

<strong>de</strong> participação, ou, como refere E. Morin, <strong>de</strong> “projecção-i<strong>de</strong>ntificação”.<br />

O sentimento <strong>de</strong> individualida<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> cada um, com as suas<br />

crenças e verda<strong>de</strong>s, per<strong>de</strong>-se frequentemente quando um personagem-espelho<br />

reintegra o imaginário na realida<strong>de</strong> vivida.<br />

Neste <strong>Festival</strong>, preten<strong>de</strong>-se que o público se envolva mais ainda, se<br />

sinta verda<strong>de</strong>iramente penetrado por um cinema que lhe transporta<br />

as realida<strong>de</strong>s e o imaginário das ténues linhas que separam o “bem<br />

estar” do sofrimento humano.<br />

Nasceu um novo festival <strong>de</strong> cinema em Cascais.<br />

Trata da medicina – saú<strong>de</strong>/ prevenção/ <strong>de</strong>senvolvimento/ doença/<br />

sofrimento – e suas percepções nas mais diversas socieda<strong>de</strong>s e contextos<br />

<strong>de</strong> vida.<br />

Agora, esta novíssima e frágil re<strong>de</strong> terá <strong>de</strong> se conectar com a re<strong>de</strong><br />

global, colectiva, dos festivais internacionais <strong>de</strong> cinema, para que possa<br />

crescer, e estabilizar. Isto só será mesmo possível com a compreensão<br />

<strong>de</strong> todos, realizadores, produtores e actores, e <strong>de</strong> todo o suporte<br />

da re<strong>de</strong> empresarial interessada e consciente da sua responsabilida<strong>de</strong><br />

social no apoio ao <strong>de</strong>senvolvimento cultural da socieda<strong>de</strong>.<br />

Esperamos que todos possam e queiram participar… e que <strong>de</strong>sfrutem!<br />

A message from the Director<br />

This will be the first edition of the MedCINECascais Film <strong>Festival</strong>, a festival<br />

that intends to highlight the quality and the precision of some cinematographic<br />

productions involving health sciences.<br />

The creation of a new film festival is always a dive onto the unknown, but<br />

this is a thematic niche which, <strong>de</strong>spite having been wi<strong>de</strong>ly treated in hundreds<br />

of movies and documentaries, it has never been highlighted and chosen<br />

as a matter worthy of appreciation or to be awar<strong>de</strong>d.<br />

A film festival is, like in De Valck statement, an obligatory “point of passage”,<br />

terminology that links the <strong>de</strong>signed structure of these events to the<br />

concept of “the rite of passage” introduced in 1909 by the anthropologist<br />

Arnold van Gennep to fix a moment of “cultural legitimization”. In fact,<br />

the temporary withdrawal of the productions from the commercial circuits,<br />

the variety of rituals displayed at <strong>Festival</strong>s and the awards ceremonies, are<br />

phenomena that contribute to the positioning of films (and of filmmakers) in<br />

the contemporary culture, giving them acknowledgement, not only from an<br />

esthetical point of view but from a social one as well, which they <strong>de</strong>serve.<br />

The thematic film festivals have coherent and “specialized” programmes,<br />

establishing them as prestigious spaces for all of those, from all over the<br />

world, which have a word to say about any given subject and would like<br />

to share it or spread it throughout the globalized world. So, we hope that<br />

all the new talents and authors respond to our calling and come to this<br />

meeting in Cascais, in or<strong>de</strong>r to focus and discuss matters such as health<br />

and illness in the daily living of human people.<br />

In a movie we find, through the unique touch of each director, a content<br />

that represents the society, with all its different ways of action – reaction,<br />

all kinds of ambivalences and incoherencies, and its variations in<br />

time, revealing the dominant i<strong>de</strong>ologies of each era. That’s why the movie<br />

involves the spectator, between the real and the imaginary, turning him<br />

into an actor, in a psychic participative flow or, as E. Morin refers, as a<br />

“projection– i<strong>de</strong>ntification” posture. The feeling of individuality present<br />

in each of us, with all our beliefs and truths, is frequently lost when a mirror<br />

- personality reinstates the imaginary on our daily reality.<br />

In this film festival, we would like that the public, the audience got even<br />

more involved, that they feel truly compelled by the movies that show the<br />

realities and the imaginary of the thin lines that divi<strong>de</strong> the human “well –<br />

being” from the human suffering.<br />

A new film festival is born in Cascais.<br />

Handles subjects like medicine – health / prevention / <strong>de</strong>velopment / diseases<br />

/ suffering – and all its perceptions in all the different societies and<br />

contexts of life.<br />

Now, this young and fragile network has to connect itself with the global<br />

and cooperative network of the international film festivals, so that it may<br />

remain and <strong>de</strong>velop. This will only be possible with the total comprehension<br />

of the directors, the producers and the actors, and with the entire support<br />

of the enterprises committed and aware of their social responsibility<br />

on supporting the cultural <strong>de</strong>velopment of the society.<br />

We hope that all of you can and may participate …and most importantly<br />

É com muito agrado que recebemos em Cascais o primeiro MedCineCascais<br />

Film <strong>Festival</strong> - <strong>Festival</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong> <strong>Médico</strong>, que vai levar a projecção<br />

<strong>de</strong> longas e curtas metragens, e ainda documentários - especialmente <strong>de</strong>dicados<br />

ao tema da medicina e saú<strong>de</strong> -, a espaços culturais <strong>de</strong> referência<br />

no nosso concelho, como sejam o Museu Con<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> Castro Guimarães, o<br />

Centro Cultural <strong>de</strong> Cascais e a Casa <strong>de</strong> Santa Maria. Refira-se que estes<br />

três edifícios classificados integram um perímetro cultural <strong>de</strong> significado<br />

muito especial para a Vila <strong>de</strong> Cascais, que integra ainda a Fortaleza da<br />

Cida<strong>de</strong>la, a Igreja Paroquial, a Casa Sommer, o Farol-Museu <strong>de</strong> Santa<br />

Marta, o Museu do Mar D. Carlos I e a Casa das Histórias Paula Rego.<br />

Esta abre ao público no dia 18 <strong>de</strong> Setembro, no <strong>de</strong>correr do “MedCine-<br />

Cascais FF’09”.<br />

Enquanto Presi<strong>de</strong>nte da Câmara Municipal <strong>de</strong> Cascais quero <strong>de</strong>sejar a todos<br />

os participantes e cinéfilos uma agradável estadia e um óptimo festival.<br />

A Message from the Mayor<br />

I am very pleased to receive in Cascais the first MedCineCascais Film<br />

<strong>Festival</strong>, screening feature and short films, as well as documentaries - especially<br />

<strong>de</strong>voted to the topic of medicine and health - in cultural referencespaces<br />

in our county, such as the “Museu Con<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> Castro Guimarães”,<br />

Cascais Cultural Center and “Casa <strong>de</strong> Santa Maria”. Notice that these<br />

three listed buildings incorporate a cultural zone of special significance<br />

to the town of Cascais, which also inclu<strong>de</strong>s the fortress of the Cita<strong>de</strong>l, the<br />

Parish Church, the “Casa Sommer”, the Lighthouse Museum of Santa<br />

Marta, the Sea Museum “D. Carlos I” and the Paula Rego’s “House of<br />

Stories” which will open to the public the 18th September, during “Med-<br />

CineCascais FF’09.<br />

As Mayor of Cascais, I want to wish all participants and moviegoers a<br />

pleasant stay and a great festival.<br />

Beber um copo <strong>de</strong> água que não nos cause doenças futuras po<strong>de</strong><br />

estar à distância <strong>de</strong> dois passos até uma torneira, uma moeda na<br />

ranhura duma máquina, uma ida até à fonte local, ou po<strong>de</strong> ser<br />

simplesmente uma utopia. É o que acontece com a maioria das<br />

populações <strong>de</strong> Moçambique que caminham vários quilómetros<br />

todos os dias, várias vezes ao dia, para irem buscar água que mais<br />

tar<strong>de</strong> as farão adoecer…<br />

be at a small distance of two steps as far as a tap, or <strong>de</strong>pending<br />

on a coin inserted into the groove of a machine, or even going for<br />

a walk reaching a local source, or, in the other hand, it can simply<br />

be a utopia. It is what it happens with the majority of the populations<br />

of Moçambique who must walk lots of kilometres every day,<br />

several times a day, to go in the search for water that, later on,<br />

will make them fall ill…<br />

doença terminal ou irreversível e que esteja, na altura, incapacitado<br />

Angel Unaware: The Tara Cole Story<br />

O Anjo Inconsciente: A História <strong>de</strong> Tara Cole<br />

Em Agosto <strong>de</strong> 2006, Tara Denise Cole foi brutalmente assassinada<br />

por dois homens que quiseram ter “algum gozo” torturando<br />

pessoas “sem-abrigo”. Enquanto que as pessoas se referiram<br />

frequentemente a ela como “ a sem-abrigo que foi lançada ao<br />

rio”, a família <strong>de</strong> Tara <strong>de</strong>sejava que as pessoas a conhecessem<br />

e se lembrassem <strong>de</strong>la pela pessoa que era, uma mulher querida<br />

e amável que vivia com uma doença mental que poucos podiam<br />

compreen<strong>de</strong>r. Tara era a típica jovem “teen-age”. Era extremamente<br />

popular, tinha imensos amigos, e mantinha-se numa via <strong>de</strong><br />

estrelato no Secundário. Era igualmente uma pessoa carinhosa,<br />

que amava a natureza e ajudar os outros. À medida que foi crescendo,<br />

Tara começou a apresentar as suas estranhas mudanças<br />

<strong>de</strong> humor. Tara, a menina feliz-felizarda, era agora uma mulher<br />

gravemente <strong>de</strong>primida e paranói<strong>de</strong>. Num esforço para ajudar a<br />

sua filha, a mãe <strong>de</strong> Tara, Pearl, foi com ela ao médico, que lhe<br />

diagnosticou uma <strong>de</strong>pressão grave, medicando-a para isso. Mas<br />

a sua situação agravou-se, e, para evitar auto-agressões, foi internada<br />

num hospital psiquiátrico. Quando teve alta, prometeu que<br />

manteria a medicação <strong>de</strong> forma regular, mas não conseguiu cumprir<br />

a promessa. Porque Tara era uma pessoa adulta, dizem aos<br />

pais que não po<strong>de</strong>rão fazer nada para a ajudar. Ficam limitados<br />

e forçados a seguir a <strong>de</strong>terioração mental da sua filha… (Escrito<br />

In August 2006, Tara Denise Cole was brutally mur<strong>de</strong>red by two<br />

men who wanted to have “some fun” torturing homeless people.<br />

While people often referred to her as “the homeless woman who<br />

was thrown into the river”, Tara’s family wanted people to know<br />

and remember Tara for the person that she was, a loving, caring,<br />

and kind woman who lived with a mental disor<strong>de</strong>r that few people<br />

could un<strong>de</strong>rstand. Tara was your typical teen-age girl. She was<br />

very popular in high school. She had lots of friends, and was a<br />

high school track star. She was also a caring person who loved<br />

nature and helping others. As Tara grew ol<strong>de</strong>r, she began to exhibit<br />

her strange behavioral changes. Tara, the happy-go-lucky<br />

girl, was now a severely <strong>de</strong>pressed and paranoid woman. In an<br />

effort to help her daughter, Tara’s mother, Pearl, takes her to see<br />

a doctor. Tara was first diagnosed with severe <strong>de</strong>pression and sent<br />

home with some medication. But Tara’s condition grew worse. To<br />

keep Tara from hurting herself, Pearl admitted Tara to a mental<br />

hospital. When Tara was released, she ma<strong>de</strong> a promise to stay on<br />

her medications, but she soon breaks her promise. Because Tara is<br />

an adult, her parents are told that they cannot do anything to help<br />

her. They are forced to watch their daughter’s mental condition<br />

Leo Hall iniciou a sua carreira no ví<strong>de</strong>o / produções cinematográficas em<br />

1993. Trabalhou em vários programas <strong>de</strong> televisão locais, em Memphis,<br />

TN. Em 1995, mudou-se para Nashville e produziu um programa <strong>de</strong> ví<strong>de</strong>o<br />

<strong>de</strong> música gospel, chamado “It’s Time”. Também produziu vários ví<strong>de</strong>os<br />

<strong>de</strong> música, transmissões litúrgicas e projectos <strong>de</strong> ví<strong>de</strong>o <strong>de</strong> interesses<br />

locais.<br />

Em 2005, Leo Hall e Leo Hall Productions produziram BROUGHT ME<br />

THIS FAR, uma longa metragem sobre uma mulher e os seus três filhos<br />

vivendo com SIDA. Em 2007, Leo Hall Productions produziram ANGEL<br />

UNAWARE: THE TARA COLE STORY.<br />

Leo Hall started his career in vi<strong>de</strong>o/film productions in 1993. He worked<br />

on several local television programs in Memphis, TN. In 1995, he moved<br />

to Nashville and produced a gospel music vi<strong>de</strong>o program, called “It’s<br />

Time”. He also produced several music vi<strong>de</strong>os, church broadcasts and<br />

vi<strong>de</strong>o projects for local businesses. In 2005, Leo Hall and Leo Hall Productions<br />

produced BROUGHT ME THIS FAR, a feature film about a<br />

woman and her three children who is living with AIDS. In 2007, Leo Hall<br />

Productions produced ANGEL UNAWARE: THE TARA COLE STORY.

Nic Balthazar<br />

Nascido em Ghent na Bélgica a 24 <strong>de</strong> Julho <strong>de</strong> 1964, entrou num musical<br />

da Broadway na adolescência. Estudou literatura e drama em Ghent e começou<br />

a escrever suas primeiras críticas <strong>de</strong> teatro para “De Morgen” aos<br />

21 anos. Mais tar<strong>de</strong> trabalhou como journalista <strong>de</strong> rádio e <strong>de</strong> televisão e<br />

<strong>de</strong>u os primeiros passos como realizador. A sua novela <strong>de</strong> 2002 “Niets era<br />

Alles Wat Hij Zei” (“Nada Era Como Ele Disse “) teve enorme sucesso.<br />

BEN X foi o seu primeiro filme como um realizador.<br />

Born in Ghent in Belgium on July 24th,1964, he appeared in a Broadway<br />

musical in his teens. He studied literature and drama in Ghent and began<br />

writing his first theatre reviews for “De Morgen” at the age of 21. He later<br />

worked as a radio and television journalist and ma<strong>de</strong> his first forays into<br />

directing. His 2002 novel “Niets Was Alles Wat Hij Zei” (“Nothing Was<br />

gravemente <strong>de</strong>primido. Havia história <strong>de</strong> doença bipolar na família. O tio<br />

<strong>de</strong> Evan, Scott, que sofreu da mesma enfermida<strong>de</strong> mental, terminou com<br />

Scott, who suffered from the same mental illness, took his own<br />

A multi-premiada escritora / cineasta e ex-assistente jurídica, Kathilynn<br />

Phillips começou sua carreira quando vivia na área da baía <strong>de</strong> San Francisco<br />

na Califórnia. A oportunida<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> Kat <strong>de</strong> produzir um dos seus próprios<br />

“scripts” surgiu quando ela e o seu marido, o Dr. Eric Springman foram<br />

para Filadélfia, on<strong>de</strong> formaram a “Kat Scratch Films”, começando a trabalhar<br />

na produção em alta <strong>de</strong>finição do seu curto “script” “ Space available<br />

“ (2003). Apesar da curta-metragem “Space available “ (2004) ter sido<br />

o filme <strong>de</strong> estreia da Sra. Phillips, foi visto por milhares <strong>de</strong> pessoas nos<br />

E.U.A. e na Grã-Bretanha, através <strong>de</strong> cerca <strong>de</strong> trinta e cinco festivais <strong>de</strong><br />

cinema até agora, acumulando diversos prémios. Este “script” está a ser<br />

pon<strong>de</strong>rado por uma empresa internacionalmente conhecida para produção<br />

<strong>de</strong> uma longa-metragem. O premiado “Katrina’s Wake” (2006) foi a<br />

sua quinta “curta”, também exibido no circuito dos festivais, tendo ganho<br />

diversos prémios. “Chasing the Dragon White” é a sua terceira “joint venture”<br />

Entre os seus projectos, Kat continua a escrever na área <strong>de</strong> Filadélfia. Estuda<br />

as mudanças na tecnologia da produção digital <strong>de</strong> filmes, sempre<br />

em movimento, em busca <strong>de</strong> novas histórias e mensagens para trazer ao<br />

público este novo meio.<br />

A multi-award-winning writer/filmmaker and former Assistant District<br />

Attorney, Kathilynn Phillips began her entertainment career as a screenwriter<br />

while living in the San Francisco Bay area of California. Kat’s opportunity<br />

to produce one of her scripts arose upon a move to Phila<strong>de</strong>lphia<br />

where she and her husband, Dr. Eric Springman, formed “Kat Scratch<br />

Films” and began work on the high <strong>de</strong>finition production of her short<br />

script “Space available” (2003). Though the short film “Space available”<br />

(2004) was Ms. Phillips’ movie-making <strong>de</strong>but, it screened to thousands all<br />

over the USA and in Britain via nearly thirty-five film festivals thus far and<br />

has garnered many awards. This script is currently un<strong>de</strong>r consi<strong>de</strong>ration<br />

by an internationally known company for production as a feature film.<br />

Award-winning “Katrina’s Wake” (2006) was Kat’s fifth short film project,<br />

also exhibited on the festival circuit and won several awards. “Chasing<br />

the White Dragon” is her third joint venture with Austin Haley and his<br />

Little Bo Productions.<br />

Between projects, Kat continues to write in the Phila<strong>de</strong>lphia area. She<br />

studies the changes in the ever-advancing technology of digital motion<br />

picture production, seeking for new stories and messages to bring to audiences<br />

this new medium.<br />

Ricardo Nogueira começou a sua carreira em 1991 em publicida<strong>de</strong>, participando<br />

na cinematografia <strong>de</strong> mais <strong>de</strong> 250 filmes. Mais tar<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>dica-se<br />

à operação <strong>de</strong> câmera e steadicam colaborando em mais <strong>de</strong> 50 programas<br />

<strong>de</strong> TV, entretenimento, <strong>de</strong>sporto e ficção. Em 1996 funda a sua produtora,<br />

on<strong>de</strong> realiza e produz vários institucionais, ví<strong>de</strong>o-clips e genéricos. A partir<br />

<strong>de</strong> 1998 <strong>de</strong>dica-se também à supervisão técnica e operação <strong>de</strong> câmara<br />

em séries <strong>de</strong> ficção. Em 2003 muda-se para Londres para estudar realização,<br />

direcção <strong>de</strong> actores e guionismo, trabalhando sempre em TV. No<br />

final <strong>de</strong> 2006, já em Portugal, funda a ONG “Help Images” on<strong>de</strong> produz e<br />

realiza filmes para promoção da responsabilida<strong>de</strong> social, esperando, <strong>de</strong>sta<br />

maneira, ajudar na construção <strong>de</strong> um mundo mais justo e melhor.<br />

Raquel Martins regressa dos USA em 1987 <strong>de</strong>pois <strong>de</strong> concluir o curso<br />

<strong>de</strong> publicida<strong>de</strong>. A partir <strong>de</strong> 1988 <strong>de</strong>dica-se inteiramente à pós-produção<br />

digital para publicida<strong>de</strong>, efeitos especiais e grafismo. Em 1996 funda a<br />

sua produtora on<strong>de</strong> produz e realiza documentários e institucionais. Paralelamente<br />

produz conteúdos <strong>de</strong> TV. Em 2000 realiza vários documentários<br />

sobre Lisboa. Em 2001 entra como produtora e programadora <strong>de</strong><br />

conteúdos para a Walt Disney Portugal. Em 2003 é transferida para a Walt<br />

Disney em Londres, integrando a equipa responsável pela programação<br />

e produção Disney Channel para a Europa. Faz o Mestrado em Design<br />

Studies, Central Saint Martins, Londres. Regressa a Lisboa em 2006 para<br />

fundar a ONG “Help Images” on<strong>de</strong> realiza e produz conteúdos <strong>de</strong> Responsabilida<strong>de</strong><br />

Social.

O filme resulta <strong>de</strong> uma i<strong>de</strong>ia da ACEP para dar voz e rosto a intervenientes<br />

da cooperação e do <strong>de</strong>senvolvimento <strong>de</strong> Cabo Ver<strong>de</strong><br />

e da Guiné-Bissau. Reconhecendo que na relação Norte-Sul, em<br />

particular na relação Europa-África, os protagonistas pertencem,<br />

frequente e persistentemente, ao lado que domina os circuitos da<br />

comunicação, o filme procura criar espaço para outras vozes, <strong>de</strong><br />

dignida<strong>de</strong>, interrogação e, sobretudo, <strong>de</strong> confiança no futuro.<br />

intervening in programmes of cooperation and <strong>de</strong>velopment<br />

in Cabo Ver<strong>de</strong> and Guiné-Bissau. Recognizing that in the North-<br />

A comedy about therapy and its discontents.<br />

Ma<strong>de</strong>leine Olnek<br />

Ma<strong>de</strong>leine Olnek é uma cineasta, realizadora e dramaturga. A sua primeira<br />

comédia curta “Hold Up”, foi seleção oficial <strong>de</strong> Sundance 2006 e no Los<br />

Angeles Film <strong>Festival</strong>. As suas peças já foram <strong>de</strong>scritas por Paula Vogel<br />

como “incríveis obras <strong>de</strong> arte contemporânea” no American Theater Magazine.<br />

Olnek é também um dos autores <strong>de</strong> “Manual prático do actor”<br />

(prefácio <strong>de</strong> David Mamet).<br />

Ma<strong>de</strong>leine Olnek is a filmmaker, director and playwright. Her first short<br />

comedy “Hold Up,” was an official selection of Sundance 2006 and the<br />

Los Angeles Film <strong>Festival</strong>. Her plays have been <strong>de</strong>scribed by playwright<br />

Paula Vogel as “incredible contemporary masterpieces” in American<br />

Theater Magazine. Olnek is also one of the authors of “A Practical Handbook<br />

for the Actor” (foreword by David Mamet).


Daniel Finds his Walking Stick<br />

Daniel encontra a sua bengala<br />

“Daniel encontra a sua bengala” é uma colagem das memórias<br />

<strong>de</strong> um homem que sofre <strong>de</strong> Alzheimer. É um retrato engraçado e<br />

triste da situação <strong>de</strong> um homem só envelhecendo num mundo <strong>de</strong><br />

mudança. A sua esposa, Lydia, faleceu há 25 anos e o seu filho,<br />

Lester, há 15. Contudo, estes factos são, na sua maior parte, esquecidos<br />

por Daniel que vive numa mistura <strong>de</strong> memórias e momentos<br />

presentes.<br />

Daniel Finds his Walking Stick is a collage of memories from a<br />

man suffering from Alzheimer’s. It is a funny and sad portrait of<br />

the plight of an aging lonely man in a changing world. His wife,<br />

Lydia, has been gone for 25 years and his son, Lester, for 15.<br />

However, these facts are mostly lost to Daniel as he lives in a fusion<br />

of his memories and current day.<br />

<strong>Festival</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong> <strong>de</strong> Vail em 2007. Gary tem trabalhado no cinema em<br />

diversas activida<strong>de</strong>s, mas primariamente como <strong>de</strong>senhador <strong>de</strong> títulos e<br />

O dia começa. Um novo elemento da missão MdM em São Tomé<br />

está prestes a chegar <strong>de</strong> Portugal. Tendo este acontecimento como<br />

ponto <strong>de</strong> partida, acompanhamos o dia <strong>de</strong> trabalho da equipa dos<br />

MdM, no terreno, dando, <strong>de</strong> forma directa e informativa, uma<br />

visão privilegiada do trabalho que é realizado todos os dias pelos<br />

activistas com <strong>de</strong>slocações a vários pontos do país, assim como<br />

das relações <strong>de</strong> camaradagem que se estabelecem.<br />

O documentário inci<strong>de</strong> em particular em três projectos a <strong>de</strong>correr<br />

no terreno: “Comunida<strong>de</strong> Apoio à Vida”, “Sensibilização para a<br />

prevenção da infecção pelo VIH/SIDA” e “ Projecto <strong>de</strong> Saú<strong>de</strong> na<br />

Prisão Central”.<br />

The day begins. A new element of the MdM mission in Sao Tome is<br />

about to arrive from Portugal. With this event as a starting point, we<br />

follow the daily work of the MdM team on the ground, giving us directly<br />

and in an informative way, a privileged view of the work being<br />

done every day by activists who travel to various parts of the<br />

country, as well as of the relations of friendship that are established.<br />

Ricardo Nogueira e Raquel Martins<br />

Ricardo Nogueira começou a sua carreira em 1991 em publicida<strong>de</strong>, participando<br />

na cinematografia <strong>de</strong> mais <strong>de</strong> 250 filmes. Mais tar<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>dica-se<br />

à operação <strong>de</strong> câmera e steadicam colaborando em mais <strong>de</strong> 50 programas<br />

<strong>de</strong> TV, entretenimento, <strong>de</strong>sporto e ficção. Em 1996 funda a sua produtora,<br />

on<strong>de</strong> realiza e produz vários institucionais, ví<strong>de</strong>o-clips e genéricos. A partir<br />

<strong>de</strong> 1998 <strong>de</strong>dica-se também à supervisão técnica e operação <strong>de</strong> câmara<br />

em séries <strong>de</strong> ficção. Em 2003 muda-se para Londres para estudar realização,<br />

direcção <strong>de</strong> actores e guionismo, trabalhando sempre em TV. No<br />

final <strong>de</strong> 2006, já em Portugal, funda a ONG “Help Images” on<strong>de</strong> produz e<br />

realiza filmes para promoção da responsabilida<strong>de</strong> social, esperando, <strong>de</strong>sta<br />

maneira, ajudar na construção <strong>de</strong> um mundo mais justo e melhor.<br />

Raquel Martins regressa dos USA em 1987 <strong>de</strong>pois <strong>de</strong> concluir o curso<br />

<strong>de</strong> publicida<strong>de</strong>. A partir <strong>de</strong> 1988 <strong>de</strong>dica-se inteiramente à pós-produção<br />

digital para publicida<strong>de</strong>, efeitos especiais e grafismo. Em 1996 funda a<br />

sua produtora on<strong>de</strong> produz e realiza documentários e institucionais. Paralelamente<br />

produz conteúdos <strong>de</strong> TV. Em 2000 realiza vários documentários<br />

sobre Lisboa. Em 2001 entra como produtora e programadora <strong>de</strong><br />

conteúdos para a Walt Disney Portugal. Em 2003 é transferida para a Walt<br />

Disney em Londres, integrando a equipa responsável pela programação<br />

e produção Disney Channel para a Europa. Faz o Mestrado em Design<br />

Studies, Central Saint Martins, Londres. Regressa a Lisboa em 2006 para<br />

fundar a ONG “Help Images” on<strong>de</strong> realiza e produz conteúdos <strong>de</strong> Responsabilida<strong>de</strong><br />

Neste documentário somos confrontados com as vivências <strong>de</strong><br />

médicos que adoecem, sofrendo <strong>de</strong> cancro da mama, doenças<br />

<strong>de</strong>generativas neurológicas/pulmonares, cardiopatia isquémica,<br />

“burn out”, ou mesmo adições. Através <strong>de</strong> uma série <strong>de</strong> entrevistas,<br />

os testemunhos dos médicos doentes, surgem <strong>de</strong> forma<br />

pessoal, humana e tocante, com uma visão e opinião próprias do<br />

“connaisseur” profissional do sistema <strong>de</strong> saú<strong>de</strong> em Espanha.<br />

In this documentary we are faced with the experiences of doctors<br />

as patients suffering from breast cancer, ischaemic cardiopathy,<br />

neurological/pulmonary <strong>de</strong>generative diseases, burn out, or even<br />

addictions. Through a series of interviews, the documentary presents<br />

unique testimonies from medical doctors being ill, in a most<br />

human and touching aspect, ad<strong>de</strong>d with the vision and opinion<br />

of the professional “connaisseur” of the health system in Spain.<br />

Finding the World<br />

O filme relata o processo <strong>de</strong> constituição e <strong>de</strong>senvolvimento <strong>de</strong><br />

uma associação rural, numa zona isolada do Distrito <strong>de</strong> Matutuine<br />

no extremo sul <strong>de</strong> Moçambique. Ilustra-se o caminho <strong>de</strong> aprendizagem,<br />

capacitação e apropriação que levou a comunida<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong><br />

Djabula a passar do isolamento inicial para a i<strong>de</strong>ntificação dos<br />

problemas comuns e a <strong>de</strong>scoberta <strong>de</strong> soluções conjuntas no seio<br />

da associação.<br />

Este filme foi filmado pelos técnicos do projecto implementado<br />

pela VIDA, pessoas comuns e sem experiência em realização <strong>de</strong><br />

filmagens, sendo, por isso, um filme amador. As imagens ilustram<br />

a participação da comunida<strong>de</strong> nas diversas activida<strong>de</strong>s <strong>de</strong> formação,<br />

capacitação e intercâmbio <strong>de</strong> experiências que <strong>de</strong>terminam a<br />

The film <strong>de</strong>scribes the process of formation and <strong>de</strong>velopment of a<br />

rural association in an isolated area of the District of Matutuine in<br />

the extreme south of Mozambique. It illustrates the path of learning,<br />

empowerment and ownership that led the community of Djabula<br />

to move from an initial isolation to the i<strong>de</strong>ntification of common<br />

problems and finding joint solutions within the association.<br />

This film was shot by the technicians of the project implemented<br />

by VIDA, ordinary people with no experience in directing and<br />

shooting, and therefore it is an amateur film. The images illustrate<br />

the community’s participation in several teaching activities;<br />

training and exchange of experiences witch <strong>de</strong>termine the formation<br />

and consolidation of the Pfukani Djabila Association.

Smoking I Wait<br />

Para parar uma adição, uma fumadora <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong> estudar o assunto e<br />

fazer um documentário sobre ele, no qual apresenta os seus obstáculos<br />

pessoais e os inúmeros aspectos da que é consi<strong>de</strong>rada a<br />

indústria mais letal do século 20.<br />

São abordados os diferentes aspectos do tabagismo. Esta primeira<br />

longa-metragem <strong>de</strong> Adriana L. Dutra, apresenta a trajetória do<br />

tabagismo na socieda<strong>de</strong> dos séculos XX e XXI, através <strong>de</strong> entrevistas<br />

com anónimos e celebrida<strong>de</strong>s – como Eduardo Moscovis,<br />

Carla Camurati, Scarlet Moon, Miúcha, Ney Latorraca, entre outros.<br />

Formadores <strong>de</strong> opinião, artistas, investigadores, publicitários,<br />

funcionários públicos, advogados, vítimas da <strong>de</strong>pendência, crianças,<br />

além <strong>de</strong> médico especialista e psicólogo, todos falam <strong>de</strong> sua<br />

relação com o tabaco e a nicotina.<br />

To quit an addition, a smoker <strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>s to study the subject and to<br />

make a documentary about it, in which she presents her personal<br />

hurdles and the innumerable aspects of what is consi<strong>de</strong>red the<br />

most <strong>de</strong>adly industry of the 20th century. The different aspects of<br />

tobacco addiction are consi<strong>de</strong>red. This first long documentary of<br />

Adriana L. Dutra, presents the trajectory of tobacco in the 20th<br />

and 21st centuries societies through interviews with anonym people<br />

and celebrities - as Eduardo Moscovis, Carla Camurati, Scarlet<br />

Moon, Miúcha, Ney Latorraca, among others. Opinion markers,<br />

artists, investigators, advertising executives, civil servants,<br />

lawyers, victims of the addiction, children, and also a medical<br />

doctor and a psychologist, all of them speak about their relationship<br />

Water Fountains Community Management<br />

O PGCC (Projecto <strong>de</strong> Communitarian Gestão of Chafarizes) levou<br />

até Luanda, ao Município <strong>de</strong> Cazenga, um sistema inovador<br />

<strong>de</strong> gestão sustentável <strong>de</strong> chafarizes que permite às populações<br />

terem acesso mais facilitado à água potável. Na comunida<strong>de</strong> Tala-<br />

Hady foram constituídas associações <strong>de</strong> moradores e zeladores<br />

permitindo à população fazer a manutenção e gestão dos seus<br />

próprios chafarizes.<br />

Danishka Esterhazy<br />

Danishka Esterhazy é uma cineasta Canadiana que utiliza um estilo visual<br />

<strong>de</strong> “assombrado” para criar histórias que contextualizam as barreiras à<br />

intimida<strong>de</strong> humana. Esterhazy é graduada pelo Director’s Lab Program do<br />

Canadian Film Centre, a escola <strong>de</strong> cinema <strong>de</strong> renome fundada por Norman<br />

Jewison. Escreveu e dirigiu várias curtas-metragens, incluindo o vencedor<br />

do Prémio <strong>de</strong> Drama do National Screen Institute “A Rainha da Neve”.<br />

“Life for a Child” segue os percursos <strong>de</strong> crianças com diabetes<br />

tipo - 1 entre as montanhas ver<strong>de</strong>jantes e as ruas populosas do Nepal,<br />

um dos países mais pobres do mundo. Através <strong>de</strong> seus olhos<br />

Sob direcção <strong>de</strong> Gonzalo García Palmeiro, o guião original do Dr<br />

Solla revela, aos olhos oci<strong>de</strong>ntais, a realida<strong>de</strong> sócio-económica da<br />

Nicarágua e a sua relação com a saú<strong>de</strong> da população. O documentário<br />

retrata três sectores económicos distintos: Um, abastado,<br />

com fácil acesso a exames e tratamentos, um segundo sector “médio”<br />

que necessita <strong>de</strong> equilibrar os seus recursos quando perante<br />

of Dr Solla shows, to Western eyes, the socio-economic reality of<br />

Nicaragua and its relationship to health. The documentary portrays<br />

three different economic sectors: A wealthy, with easy access to diagnosis<br />

and treatments, a second “average” sector that needs to<br />

balance its resources when faced with a disease, and one third in<br />

extreme poverty with total limited access to health care.<br />

Ricardo Nogueira<br />

Ricardo Nogueira began his career in advertising (1991), participating in<br />

the cinematography of more than 250 films. Later on he <strong>de</strong>dicates to the<br />

operation of camcor<strong>de</strong>r and steadicam working in over 50 TV, entertainment,<br />

sport and fiction shows. In 1996 he foun<strong>de</strong>d his production company,<br />

where he directs and produces several institutionals, vi<strong>de</strong>o clips and generics.<br />

From 1998 he also <strong>de</strong>votes himself to the technical supervision and operation<br />

of camcor<strong>de</strong>r in drama series. In 2003 he moved to London to study<br />

production, actors’ direction and screenwriting, always working in TV. At<br />

the end of 2006, back in Portugal, he foun<strong>de</strong>d the NGO “Help Images”<br />

where he produces and directs films for promotion of social responsibility,<br />

hoping in this way to help building a more just and better world.<br />

Raquel Martins<br />

Raquel Martins, after completing the course of advertising, returns from the<br />

USA in 1987. From 1988 she <strong>de</strong>dicated herself entirely to digital post-production<br />

for advertising, special effects and graphics. In 1996 she foun<strong>de</strong>d<br />

her production company were she produces and directs documentaries and<br />

institutionals. At the same time she produces TV contents. In 2000 she directs<br />

several documentaries about Lisbon. In 2001 she works as a producer<br />

and programmer of contents for Walt Disney Portugal. In 2003 she moved<br />

to Walt Disney in London, integrating the team responsible for programming<br />

and production for Disney Channel Europe. Meanwhile she completes<br />

her Master Degree in Design Studies, Central Saint Martins, London. She<br />

returns to Lisbon in 2006 to found the NGO “Help Images” where she directs<br />

and produces contents for Social Responsibility.

Run to Me Run from Me is a remarkably candid story of love, lust,<br />

<strong>de</strong>sire, and the fluid boundaries of i<strong>de</strong>ntity. The story unfolds as<br />

a high school track athlete is stuck in a world of anorexia and a<br />

sexual fantasy with whose terms he finds increasingly difficult to<br />

Skin Felt<br />

Sentidos à Flor da Pele acompanha a rotina <strong>de</strong> vida <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>ficientes<br />

visuais <strong>de</strong> ida<strong>de</strong>s variadas e <strong>de</strong> locais diferentes, que actuam <strong>de</strong><br />

modo nada convencional no mercado <strong>de</strong> trabalho. Vivemos num<br />

mundo cada vez mais dominado por imagens. A perda parcial ou<br />

total da visão promove um aprofundamento na percepção e fruição<br />

dos outros sentidos, que se tornam muito mais aguçados. O tema<br />

principal do filme são as capacida<strong>de</strong>s, habilida<strong>de</strong>s, inúmeras possibilida<strong>de</strong>s<br />

<strong>de</strong> inclusão, também estímulos, compreensão e a luta<br />

contra todo tipo <strong>de</strong> preconceito.<br />

“Sentidos à Flor da Pele” (“Skin Felt”) follows the life routines<br />

of visually impaired people with different ages and from varied<br />

places, at home and at work, acting unconventionally within the<br />

labour market. We live in a world increasingly dominated by images.<br />

The partial or total loss of vision provi<strong>de</strong>s an insight into the<br />

perception and enjoyment of other senses, which become much<br />

more acute. The main theme of the movie is the skills, abilities,<br />

several possibilities for inclusion, incentives, un<strong>de</strong>rstanding and<br />

the fight against all kinds of prejudice.<br />

Evaldo Mocarzel<br />

Evaldo Sérgio Vinagre Mocarzel, nasceu em 1960, em Niterói, Rio <strong>de</strong> Janeiro, Brasil,<br />

formando-se em <strong>Cinema</strong> e Jornalismo (Universida<strong>de</strong> Fe<strong>de</strong>ral Fluminense, Rio<br />

<strong>de</strong> Janeiro) em 1982. Nos quatro anos seguintes fez alguns cursos adicionais <strong>de</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong><br />

e Jornalismo, trabalhando em diversas produções, <strong>de</strong> que se <strong>de</strong>stacam mais <strong>de</strong><br />

50 comerciais <strong>de</strong> discos para a Poygram. Trabalhou durante 13 anos no jornal O Estado<br />

<strong>de</strong> S. Paulo, tendo exercido a função <strong>de</strong> editor do Ca<strong>de</strong>rno 2 durante oito anos.<br />

Em 1999 fez o curso <strong>de</strong> cinema na New York Film Aca<strong>de</strong>my, e no mesmo ano realiza<br />

a sua primeira curta-metragem, “Retratos no Parque” (prémio <strong>de</strong> Melhor Trilha<br />

Sonora no 4º <strong>Festival</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong> do Recife).<br />

Em 2001, realizou a curta-metragem “À Margem da Imagem”, documentário sobre<br />

os moradores <strong>de</strong> rua <strong>de</strong> São Paulo, com produção do cineasta Ugo Giorgetti, que<br />

ganhou 17 prémios em festivais brasileiros e internacionais. A versão em longametragem<br />

<strong>de</strong> “Á Margem da Imagem” (2003) ganhou também o Kikito <strong>de</strong> Melhor<br />

Documentário no 31 <strong>Festival</strong> <strong>de</strong> Gramado - <strong>Cinema</strong> Brasileiro e Latino e o Prémio<br />

<strong>de</strong> Melhor Documentário no <strong>Festival</strong> do Rio 2003. Des<strong>de</strong> então tem continuado<br />

com “Mensageiras da Luz - Parteiras da amazónia” (2004) e “À Margem do Concreto”<br />

(2006) a receber altos galardões nos festivais brasileiros.<br />

Nash Edgerton conhece bem o seu ofício <strong>de</strong> ambos os lados da câmara<br />

como actor, duplo, editor, produtor, guionista e realizador.<br />

Des<strong>de</strong> a sua curta “Deadline”, que ganhou o prémio máximo no Tropfest<br />

em 1997, Nash já realizou várias curtas-metragens aclamadas e premiadas<br />

localmente e no estrangeiro (Sundance, Berlin, Telluri<strong>de</strong>, Aspen, Sydney,<br />

Supramanya (“SupraHomem”) é um jovem indiano que vive numa<br />

área rural da Índia com a sua mãe cega. A sua vida está limitada<br />

vez <strong>de</strong> po<strong>de</strong>r ir à escola. Sem ele saber, a sua mãe Lalita combina<br />

mandá-lo embora - acreditando que uma educação num orfanato<br />

será melhor para ele do que uma vida ignorante passada junto<br />

<strong>de</strong>la. Sem ter mais a quem recorrer, o SupraHomem tem <strong>de</strong> galvanizar<br />

a al<strong>de</strong>ia para o ajudar a convencer a sua mãe <strong>de</strong> que eles não<br />

Supramanya (Supraman) is a young Indian boy living in rural<br />

India with his blind mother. His life is restricted by the fact that<br />

he must support his mother in her work, rather than being able<br />

to go to school. Unknown to him, Lalita his mother has ma<strong>de</strong> arrangements<br />

to send him away - believing that an education in an<br />

orphanage will be better for him than an uneducated life with her.<br />

With nowhere else to turn, Supraman must galvanize the village<br />

to help him convince his mother that they are not alone in their<br />

Debs Gardner-Paterson was ma<strong>de</strong> in Taiwan, educated in Southern India<br />

and northern England, <strong>de</strong>greed at Cambridge, and has lived, worked and<br />

travelled all over Asia, Africa, America and Europe.<br />

With a particular interest and confi<strong>de</strong>nce in narrative to comment, reflect,<br />

inspire and challenge the way things are, she is predominated focussed on<br />

online community projects, and film-making.<br />

Debs has co-written and directed 5 dramatic shorts (2007-2009), two<br />

ma<strong>de</strong> in Rwanda, two in the UK, and one in India – which have between<br />

them won “Best World <strong>Cinema</strong> Short” (Phoenix, 2008) and “Best Director”<br />

An actor since the age of nine, Brisbane-born Anthony Hayes has appeared<br />

on screens for 20 years, with film credits including West, Rabbit-<br />

O filme utiliza a era da epi<strong>de</strong>mia <strong>de</strong> tuberculose <strong>de</strong> 1950, no<br />

extremo norte como ponto <strong>de</strong> partida. A propagação da doença<br />

obrigou muitos Inuit a partirem para diversas cida<strong>de</strong>s canadianas,<br />

para tratamento. Tiwii é levado para um sanatório na cida<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong><br />

Quebec. Desenraizado, longe dos seus entes queridos e confrontado<br />

com um mu ndo completamente estranho, ele vê-se incapaz<br />

<strong>de</strong> comunicar com os outros.<br />

Quando sua enfermeira, Carole percebe que a doença <strong>de</strong> Tivii não<br />

constitui a mais séria ameaça ao seu bem-estar, consegue que um<br />

jovem órfão, Kaki, seja transferido para a instituição. O jovem<br />

também está doente, mas tem experiência <strong>de</strong> dois mundos e fala<br />

What does a human being need to live?<br />

The film uses the 1950s-era tuberculosis epi<strong>de</strong>mic in the Far<br />

North as its starting point. The spread of the disease forced many<br />

Inuit to go to various Canadian cities for treatment. Tiwii is taken<br />

to a sanatorium in Québec City. Uprooted, far from his loved ones<br />

and faced with a completely alien world, he finds himself unable<br />

to communicate with anyone.<br />

When his nurse, Carole realizes that Tivii’s illness is not the most<br />

serious threat to his well-being, she arranges to have a young<br />

orphan, Kaki, transferred to the institution. The boy is also sick,<br />

but has experience of both worlds and speaks both languages. By<br />

sharing his culture with Kaki and opening it up to others, Tivii<br />

rediscovers his pri<strong>de</strong> and energy. Ultimately he also rediscovers<br />

hope through a plan to adopt Kaki, bring him home and make him<br />

This zombie-apocalypse-like movie set on plains of the Scottish<br />

Bor<strong>de</strong>rs (Highlands) follows in the footsteps of the Night of the<br />

Living Dead by George A. Romero. This time however a group<br />

of people in an isolated house does not face zombies, but people<br />

infected by a neurological virus causing insanity. The contrast<br />

between the outsi<strong>de</strong> world and the seemingly safe interior of the<br />

house gradually disappears just like the differences between the<br />

infected and healthy people. Carefully hid<strong>de</strong>n insanity slowly filters<br />

out through the traumatic past of the heroes. The film builds<br />

on the stark contrast between the peaceful countrysi<strong>de</strong>, the quiet<br />

house and the savage images of insanity.<br />

Geoffrey Smith<br />

Geoffrey Smith nasceu em Melbourne, na Austrália e foi sempre um fascinado<br />

pelas imagens em movimento. Nunca à vonta<strong>de</strong> no “país da sorte”,<br />

contudo, viajou para se encontrar a si mesmo e <strong>de</strong>scobriu pelo caminho<br />

uma predilecção por ouvir e contar histórias. Em 1987, estando no Haiti,<br />

a ajudar a fazer um documentário sobre a primeira eleição que lá havia<br />

em 31 anos, após ter <strong>de</strong>scoberto um massacre <strong>de</strong> vinte e um eleitores num<br />

pátio <strong>de</strong>, escola, foi baleado e ferido. Esforçando-se por reorganizar <strong>de</strong><br />

novo a sua vida em Londres, Geoffrey <strong>de</strong>cidiu filmar a viagem <strong>de</strong> volta<br />

ao Haiti para encontrar o homem que quase o matara. Este aclamado filme<br />

foi posteriormente exibido pela BBC e é notável pelo retrato catártico<br />

intimo representado na tela. Tendo <strong>de</strong>scoberto, através <strong>de</strong>ste filme muito<br />

pessoal que a câmara po<strong>de</strong> ser uma po<strong>de</strong>rosa ferramenta catártica para<br />

ajudar as pessoas nos períodos difíceis das suas vidas, muitos dos filmes<br />

subsequentes <strong>de</strong> Geoffrey são construídos através <strong>de</strong>ste tipo <strong>de</strong> uso da câmara.<br />

Vencedor <strong>de</strong> vários prémios, incluindo um RTS em 2004 e em 2007,<br />

fez mais <strong>de</strong> vinte dois filmes para as principais emissoras do Reino Unido,<br />

focalizando a sua atenção para a observação dos dramas da vida real, on<strong>de</strong><br />

abundam profundos dilemas éticos e morais. O seu último filme é um<br />

Storyville BBC2 filmado <strong>de</strong>ntro do KGB hospital em Kiev, e apresenta<br />

Geoffrey Smith was born in Melbourne, Australia and was always fascinated<br />

by the moving image. Never at ease in “the lucky country” however,<br />

he went travelling to find himself and discovered en route a love of listening<br />

and storytelling. In 1987 he found himself in Haiti helping to make a<br />

documentary about the first election there in 31 years, but following the<br />

discovery of a massacre of twenty one voters in a schoolyard he was shot<br />

and woun<strong>de</strong>d. Struggling to put his life back together in London, Geoffrey<br />

<strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d to film his journey back to Haiti to find the man who had so nearly<br />

killed him. This acclaimed film was subsequently shown on the BBC and<br />

is remarkable for the on screen catharsis it intimately portrayed. Having<br />

discovered through this very personal film that the camera could be a<br />

powerful cathartic tool in helping people through difficult periods in their<br />

lives, many of Geoffrey’s subsequent films are built around this use of the<br />

camera. Winner of numerous awards, including an RTS in 2004 and in<br />

2007, he has ma<strong>de</strong> over twenty two films for all the major UK broadcasters<br />

and is drawn to observational real life dramas where <strong>de</strong>ep ethical and<br />

moral dilemmas abound. His latest film is a BBC2 Storyville shot insi<strong>de</strong><br />

the KGB hospital in Kiev, and features an original soundtrack by Nick<br />

Cave and Warren Ellis.

how would you react if you learned you had less than two<br />

months to live? One morning Mel, a mousy, harried New Yorker<br />

with a thankless job and an even-less-appealing boyfriend learns<br />

that the tumour in her throat is cancerous; the diagnosis is terminal,<br />

so it seems that both her job and her relationship are kaput.<br />

Rather than lying down and dying then and there, she embarks on<br />

an endless spree, the kind of self-indulgent wish fulfilment that we<br />

have all fantasized about.<br />

Written by Amos Poe, and based on a real story, this beautifully<br />

realized parable speaks volumes about living. It is sure to capture<br />

Ricardo Nogueira, Raquel Martins<br />

Ricardo Nogueira começou a sua carreira em 1991 em publicida<strong>de</strong>, participando<br />

na cinematografia <strong>de</strong> mais <strong>de</strong> 250 filmes. Mais tar<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>dica-se<br />

à operação <strong>de</strong> câmera e steadicam colaborando em mais <strong>de</strong> 50 programas<br />

<strong>de</strong> TV, entretenimento, <strong>de</strong>sporto e ficção. Em 1996 funda a sua produtora,<br />

on<strong>de</strong> realiza e produz vários institucionais, ví<strong>de</strong>o-clips e genéricos. A partir<br />

<strong>de</strong> 1998 <strong>de</strong>dica-se também à supervisão técnica e operação <strong>de</strong> câmara<br />

em séries <strong>de</strong> ficção. Em 2003 muda-se para Londres para estudar realização,<br />

direcção <strong>de</strong> actores e guionismo, trabalhando sempre em TV. No<br />

final <strong>de</strong> 2006, já em Portugal, funda a ONG “Help Images” on<strong>de</strong> produz e<br />

realiza filmes para promoção da responsabilida<strong>de</strong> social, esperando, <strong>de</strong>sta<br />

maneira, ajudar na construção <strong>de</strong> um mundo mais justo e melhor.<br />

Raquel Martins regressa dos USA em 1987 <strong>de</strong>pois <strong>de</strong> concluir o curso<br />

<strong>de</strong> publicida<strong>de</strong>. A partir <strong>de</strong> 1988 <strong>de</strong>dica-se inteiramente à pós-produção<br />

digital para publicida<strong>de</strong>, efeitos especiais e grafismo. Em 1996 funda a<br />

sua produtora on<strong>de</strong> produz e realiza documentários e institucionais. Paralelamente<br />

produz conteúdos <strong>de</strong> TV. Em 2000 realiza vários documentários<br />

sobre Lisboa. Em 2001 entra como produtora e programadora <strong>de</strong><br />

conteúdos para a Walt Disney Portugal. Em 2003 é transferida para a Walt<br />

Disney em Londres, integrando a equipa responsável pela programação<br />

e produção Disney Channel para a Europa. Faz o Mestrado em Design<br />

Studies, Central Saint Martins, Londres. Regressa a Lisboa em 2006 para<br />

fundar a ONG “Help Images” on<strong>de</strong> realiza e produz conteúdos <strong>de</strong> Responsabilida<strong>de</strong><br />

Para captar a importância e a relevância <strong>de</strong> uma rádio comunitária<br />

numa vila em África, fomos até São Tomé e Príncipe conhecer as<br />

pessoas que juntaram esforços e tornaram dois projectos <strong>de</strong> rádios<br />

comunitárias uma realida<strong>de</strong>.<br />

Ao longo do documentário conhecemos duas comunida<strong>de</strong>s, Angolares<br />

e Neves, on<strong>de</strong> as rádios locais já foram implementadas.<br />

Através das suas histórias percebemos como estas rádios transformaram<br />

a maneira como as pessoas expressam os seus problemas,<br />

as suas preocupações e até a sua i<strong>de</strong>ntida<strong>de</strong>. Também ficámos a<br />

saber como a rádio é uma fonte <strong>de</strong> envolvimento nos projectos<br />

da comunida<strong>de</strong>. Conhecemos e ouvimos novos e velhos, homens<br />

e mulheres, todos têm uma oportunida<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> falar sobre a sua experiência<br />

comunitária, tal como na sua rádio local.<br />

To capture the importance and relevance of a community radio in<br />

a small city in Africa we have come to Sao Tome and Principe to<br />

meet the people that have agreed to make this project a reality in<br />

two of there cities. We start by meeting Ceutonia, local project coordinator,<br />

and she will take us through to meet everyone involved.<br />

Through out the documentary we meet people from two communities<br />

where the radio stations have been implemented and we learn<br />

from their stories how the radio has come to change the way they<br />

express their i<strong>de</strong>ntity, their concerns and issues, and how they<br />

have encountered in the radio stations a way of getting involved<br />

in there community. We meet young and old, women and men, all<br />

having the opportunity to talk, like they do at their local radio,<br />

about these community experiences.<br />

Zebra Crossings<br />

“Des<strong>de</strong> que nasci, chorei durante um mês...” Dezoito anos passaram, e<br />

Justin não está mais próximo da verda<strong>de</strong>. E num mundo que cada vez<br />

mais menos se importa com alguém, talvez que simplesmente confiar<br />

na amiza<strong>de</strong> não seja suficiente? Especialmente com amigos como<br />

Billy, Sean e Tommy. Tendo como pano <strong>de</strong> fundo as torres <strong>de</strong> cimento<br />

do sul <strong>de</strong> Londres, “Zebra Crossings” combina uma mistura diversificada<br />

<strong>de</strong> personagens que partilham uma coisa em comum: A solidão<br />

incrível <strong>de</strong> viver ao lado <strong>de</strong> 7 milhões <strong>de</strong> outras pessoas. Combinando<br />

o surreal com o muito real, embarcamos numa uma intensa jornada<br />

em busca <strong>de</strong> amiza<strong>de</strong>, <strong>de</strong> crença e <strong>de</strong> religião. Com um pai apagado<br />

e uma mãe distante, a única fonte <strong>de</strong> Justin <strong>de</strong> controlo mantido vem<br />

<strong>de</strong> uma fonte improvável, a sua irmã acamada Suzanne. Mas Justin<br />

precisa é <strong>de</strong> um verda<strong>de</strong>iro mentor, uma figura paterna, alguém que o<br />

possa encaminhar antes que seja tar<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>mais. Ao seu lado Marcus,<br />

ao contrário <strong>de</strong> qualquer pessoa que Justin tenha conhecido, é calmo,<br />

suave, tranquilizador – mas será que ele quer algo <strong>de</strong> Justin? Entretanto,<br />

as questões <strong>de</strong> Tommy ligadas ao abandono voltam a assombrá-lo<br />

mais uma vez, e a sua toxico<strong>de</strong>pendência “classe-A” lançou-o para<br />

um modo <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>struição total. Além disso, a pressão <strong>de</strong> um gang rival<br />

chegou ao ponto <strong>de</strong> explosão – como não há certamente espaço para<br />

dois grupos neste bairro. Justin tem <strong>de</strong> encontrar a resposta para tudo,<br />

backdrop of the towering, concrete-clad estates of south London ‘Zebra<br />

Crossings’ blends a diverse mixture of characters that all share<br />

one thing in common: The incredible loneliness of living alongsi<strong>de</strong><br />

7 million other people. Blending the surreal, and very real, we take<br />

an intense journey in search of friendship, belief and religion. With a<br />

lacklustre father and estranged mother, Justin’s only source of perennial<br />

control comes from an unlikely source, his bed-rid<strong>de</strong>n sister Suzanne.<br />

But Justin needs is a real mentor, a father figure, someone who<br />

can provi<strong>de</strong> guidance before it’s all too late. In steps Marcus, unlike<br />

anyone Justin has ever known before, calm, soft, assured - but does<br />

he want something from Justin? Meanwhile, Tommy’s abandonment<br />

issues haunt him once again, and his class-A drug addiction has sent<br />

him into full <strong>de</strong>struction mo<strong>de</strong>. Also, the pressure from a rival gang<br />

has reached exploding point - as there is certainly no space for two<br />

crews in this neighbourhood. Justin must find the answer to it all, and<br />

Sam Holland<br />

Sam estudou na Escola <strong>de</strong> <strong>Cinema</strong> <strong>de</strong> Newport (País <strong>de</strong> Gales). Trabalhou<br />

na indústria da Publicida<strong>de</strong> durante 3 anos, antes <strong>de</strong> se tornar um guionista<br />

<strong>de</strong> quatro longas metragens, enquanto realizava uma série <strong>de</strong> curtas-metragens.<br />

Este é a longa-metragem <strong>de</strong> estreia <strong>de</strong> Sam Holland.<br />

Sam studied at Newport Film School (Wales). He worked in the advert<br />

industry for 3 years, before becoming a writer of four feature screenplays,<br />

whilst directing a number of short films. This is Sam Holland’s <strong>de</strong>but feature<br />

film.<br />

as suas vivências – amores, ansieda<strong>de</strong>s e medos – nos complexos contornos sociais e médicos da década <strong>de</strong> 1980.<br />

This First Edition of MedCineCascais Film <strong>Festival</strong> is <strong>de</strong>dicated to Cyril Collard (1957-1993), who knew how to mark the <strong>Cinema</strong> with<br />

his life experiences - loves, anxieties and fears – during the complex medical and social contours of the 1980s.<br />
