Aceito em: 15/06/2008.Abstract: First documented record of Jabiru Stork, Jabiru mycteria (Lichtenstein, 1819) to Ceará State. The birds of theFamily Ciconiidae, also called “jaburus”, were considered common in the State of Ceará until the 19 th century. By mid‐20 th century,the Jabiru (Jabiru mycteria) was recorded without documentation, and considered Very Rare. The first documentation of this speciesto the state of Ceará is presented here with photos obtained in the town of Santana do Cariri, southern Ceará, on May 5 th 2007.Key-Words: Jabiru mycteria, Ciconiidae, Ceará, distribution, jabiru.Palavras-Chave: Jabiru mycteria, Ciconiidae, Ceará, distribuição, tuiuiú, jaburu.Jaburus e/ou tuiuiús são citados para o estado doCeará desde o início do Século XIX, todavia, estes nomespopulares servem para as três espécies sul-americanas dafamília Ciconiidae (Sick 1997, Straube 2000). Em 1817,o padre Aires de Casal (1754‐1821) listou a presença comumde uma ave cearense de nome jaburu (Casal 1976).O botânico inglês George Gardner (1812‐1849) percorreueste Estado no ano de 1838, onde observou comfreqüência uma ave que lhe parecia o grou (aves exóticasà América do Sul, geralmente atribuídas ao gênero GrusBrisson, 1760), descobrindo depois que era conhecidavulgarmente como jaburu (Gardner 1975). O SenadorPompeu (1818‐1877), historiador cearense, tambémcitou jaburu para o Ceará em 1863 (Brasil 1997). Paraenriquecer sua obra ficcional, o escritor José de Alencar(1829‐1877) usava elementos reais da paisagem cearenseem seus livros, tendo mencionado jaburu nas obras “Iracema”,de 1865, e “O Sertanejo”, de 1875 (Girão 1977).Segundo artigo publicado em 28 de abril de 2007 no jornalcearense O Povo, de autoria do jornalista Meton Maiae Silva, na região dos Rios Jaguaribe e Quixeré, em 1877,o nome “tuyhuyu” também era usado para designar ciconídeos.O jurista e historiador cearense Paulino Nogueira(1842‐1908) registrou em seu – Vocabulário Indígena emFigura 1: Jabiru mycteria registrado no município de Santana do Cariri, Ceará (Fotos de Marina Pinto Levy).Figure 1: Jabiru mycteria from Santana do Cariri, Ceará (Photo: Marina Pinto Levy).
