ISRRT Council member for Australia passes away<br />

On June 6, <strong>2022</strong> ISRRT lost an important member of its global family. Joanne<br />

Page ISRRT Council member for Australia passed away after a long illness.<br />

As ISRRT President, Donna Newman said, “One of ISRRT’s key strengths is<br />

the diversity of its experts from all over the world, Joanne’s contribution to<br />

elevating global health will always be remembered”. Joanne’s contributions<br />

included representing Australia’s voice during ISRRT council meetings, review<br />

of ISRRT consensus documents and serving as a writer for ISRRT special<br />

projects.<br />

Joanne contributed many years of service to ISRRT and has made a huge impact to our patients, not only in<br />

Australia but worldwide. One highlight was Joanne’s contribution to the ISRRT Special Edition, “Elevating<br />

Patient Care with Artificial Intelligence, Radiographers are essential in elevating patient with artificial<br />

Intelligence”. Joanne wrote the chapter on radiation therapy titled, “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in radiation<br />

oncology, from perspective of a radiation therapy manager.”<br />

Jo was a committed radiation therapist for over 40 years, always with a strong focus on patient care, staff<br />

wellbeing and the development of the profession. She held leadership roles in radiation therapy in both<br />

public and private health sectors and was always a strong advocate of cross disciplinary professional<br />

collaboration.<br />

She was Director of Radiation Therapy at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney. Jo helped set the standard<br />

for the profession over many years and in 2012 was awarded the Nicholas Outterside Medallion – the<br />

highest award that the ASMIRT bestows - for services to the profession.<br />

ASMIRT President Carolyn Heyes has said what many are feeling, “Jo was an inspiration to our members<br />

and our profession and will be sorely missed.” In the last weeks of her life, Jo bravely travelled north to the<br />

ASMIRT Conference in Cairns to receive the Varian Award and deliver the Varian Address. Those who were<br />

there could not help but be moved by the strength and courage she demonstrated in that act when she was<br />

so close to the end of her life.<br />

Jo was the President of the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT) from<br />

2013 to 2017 and the Australian Councillor for the International Society of Radiographers and Radiological<br />

Technologists (ISRRT) until her death on 6 June <strong>2022</strong> after a long illness.<br />
