Welcome
to a year in
our school
Over the course of the last few weeks Ms Sanchez Gonzalez has
brought together some of the most memorable moments of the
school year. From House Competitions to Trips and Visits our
students have embraced the opportunities afforded to them and
supported a wide and varied range of activities. As a result, they
have demonstrated what wonderful ambassadors our students are
in the wider community. This is something that is commented upon
regularly in our local community and it is something which we can
be proud of.
I hope that you enjoy reading about the successes contained
within this publication and may I wish you all a very safe and happy
Summer break.
F
rom the powerful productions by the Drama department to
the heated discussions of the Debate Club, our ever
expanding programme of enrichment activities has
something on offer for those seeking to grow their skills beyond the
curriculum. Art, science, chess, Minecraft, reading, writing, singing,
taking part in sports or gardening: everyone is encouraged to try
something new.

S
GS students & staff are always looking for ways
to make an impact on the community that
surround us. This year the school has managed
to put together a programme of activities and
projects that included:
inviting local primary schools to work on
Maths and STEM projects together,
raising money for local charities selling
and collecting all sorts of items (clothes,
In support
of Sport
Relief
2016
T
his year our Houses
decided to take on
a big challenge on
in order to raise the
maximum amount of money
for Sport Relief.
The Trafford Rowing Club
and the staff at PureGym,
who very kindly donated the
e q u i p m e n t f o r t h e
challenge, stayed on hand
all day to help out, and just
after a few hours, our
students not only managed
to cover this target distance
but to surpass it.
Adding a bit of football
shooting, basketball scoring
and cake eating on the side
for support, the total amount
raised on the day was a
whooping £550!
The plan was to get all the
houses together in order to
cover the 177 miles that
stretch from London to Paris
with six hours of rowing and
cycling.

O
ur school offers a great deal of sports activities and clubs that everyone is invited
to take part in: Rugby, basketball, netball, table tennis, cross-country, aerobics,
Olympic weightlifting and football. This year we want to give a special mention
to our Y9s who managed to enter the finals for the ESFA Small Schools Cup which attracts
more than140 teams from around the country. In the end it was all down to penalties and
they couldn’t bring the cup home. but It was a exciting day for both players and spectators,
and a very proud one in the history of Stretford Grammar: First time ever!

About

A Duke of Edinburgh Experience
T
he DofE practise and expedition was without
doubt the most challenging criteria of the
award. I think it would be safe to say
absolutely nobody could have anticipated what we
signed up for:
C
rumpling beneath a rucksack that was a
quarter of our own weight, weight-busters
became a standard; water was now
sacred; unknowing encounters with electric fences
followed shortly by ear-piercing
The Duke of
Edinburgh
Award
2016
shrieks; the heart-drop of realising
you’d been dragging yourself 5 km off
route; abstract speculations being the
thin thread of distraction keeping
everyone stumbling along; slugs
warming up to your tent; the muddy
ground somehow drawing everybody
to fall for it; routine exasperated sighs,
unavoidable leg-deep cow faeces,
and to top it off, a bucket full of tears as the only
coping mechanism available for many.
H
owever, the struggles were felt and shared
by everyone, which gave the experience
an inexplicable authentic sense of
enjoyment and achievement you wouldn’t be able
to gain from anything else.
The Work of our PTA
2015-2016 has been another successful year for Stretford Grammar PTA. We
have continued to work hard to raise money to supply the school with
extra funds to enhance the children’s education but also importantly our
events are aimed at bringing the school community together.
T
his year’s fundraising objective has been focused on raising money to
supply the specialist equipment for every child to be able to participate
in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We have a target of £10,000 which will
cover the cost of all tents, rucksacks, compasses etc. needed to complete the
challenges.
W
e began our events in September with the Twin Peaks of Cheshire
sponsored walk where over 40 people took part in the challenge
which raised in excess of £1000. Our next event was
our Autumn Family Quiz Night in October where families and
friends battled against each other through a variety of rounds to
be crowned Quiz Champions. This was followed by a very
successful Table top Sale/Craft Fair and Family Photo Day in
November. We had in excess of 50 stalls selling a vast range of
goods and raised over £700. Also in November we ran our first
Bags to School day where students were invited to bring in bags
of unwanted/outgrown
clothes. This raised £125 towards our
target and another one is taking place on July 11th 2016. In March we once
again
hosted our annual Ladies’ Night where lots of pampering took place
throughout the evening. There were also many stalls selling a range of beauty
products, clothes and gifts as well as food and drink.
T
hroughout the year the PTA have supported the school at other events
such as Music concerts by assisting with the making of teas/coffees and
selling second hand uniform. We are always on the lookout for new
members and would welcome any help in the future however big or small.
