Holidays come early
in Wilmette
Tree lighting, parade kick off season
Eric DeGrechie, Managing Editor
The holiday spirit will swoop into Wilmette
earlier than most towns once again
this year, when the opening of the season
will be marked by a trio of events from the
Wilmette/Kenilworth Chamber of Commerce
and plenty of other local groups.
The holiday-filled weekend begins
on Thursday, Nov. 16, with the Holiday
Downtown Merchants Open House starting
at 5 p.m. and lasting until around 9
p.m. There will also be plenty of holiday
deals at Plaza del Lago that night. Moms
and dads are invited out for a night of
great shopping with lots of treats. For
more information, visit www.wilmettekenilworth.com.
The weekend brightens the following
night, Friday, Nov. 17, when the Wilmette
Village Hall will be the scene at 7 p.m. for
the annual Holiday Tree Lighting. Village
President Bob Bielinski will help flip the
switch on the village’s holiday tree and all
can enjoy carols from local students.
As a grand finale to the celebration, the
annual Holiday Parade will march from
Linden Square to the village hall after
stepping off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday,
Nov. 18. Dozens of local organizations
will dress in their holiday best or decorate
floats and cars to roll through town. After
the parade, Santa Claus will await guests
and list to holiday wishes at the village
hall.
Santa’s Mailbox
The right time to move into a memory care community
Mary Ann, I have been
caring for my mother in
my home. How can I know
when the right time comes
to move her into memory
care community?
Most of us caring for
our loved one come from
a subjective place. I have
found that the decision is
easier to make if you step
back and look at it more
objectively.
We want to keep the
promises we have made
to care for our loved
ones. Sometimes that includes
keeping them at
home. However, it has
been proven that when
one is diagnosed with this
disease, they have a better
experience of life in
a community where others
are experiencing the
same emotions, feelings
and behaviors. In both
my personal and professional
experience, I have
found that, surprisingly
your loved one will have
an easier time adjusting
to what he or she are experiencing
because they
will be able to make new
friends and it will bring
them to an emotional
comfort level that they
would not experience if
they were to stay in their
homes.
Family members don’t
realize that being in their
homes won’t give them
the opportunity for the social
interaction, exercise,
reminiscing or connecting
to past interests.
The other opportunity
that coming into a community
can give them is the
many types of engagement
that they will be involved
in which is extremely important
to slow down the
process of the disease.
Lives change for those on
this journey when in the
proper environment. The
time to choose to move
to a community is sooner
rather than later.
So once a diagnosis
is made, especially if it
is very early onset, one
should begin to create criteria
for what you would
like your loved one to experience
when living in a
memory care community.
Emerald Place is an Anthem
Memory Care Community,
which means
we are person centered,
dedicating ourselves
every day to providing
the highest quality care,
comfort and support to
our residents. Our pledge
is to protect, engage and
love people living with
memory loss.
At Emerald Place, we
offer support groups and
educational events.
Countdown to the holidays on Chicago’s North Shore
Chicago’s North Shore is bursting with
activities to do in November as we prepare
for the holiday season.
The Illinois Holocaust Museum opens
their blockbuster new permanent exhibit,
“Take a Stand Center,” which takes visitors
on a journey about the dangers of
hatred, prejudice, and indifference — and
the power of individual voices — in a new
multi-million-dollar exhibit. A trio of interactive
galleries, including the state-ofthe-art
Survivor Stories Experience, guide
visitors through social justice issues,
empowering them with knowledge and
inspiration and reminding them to stand
against hatred in all its forms.
We have a new museum! The Halim
Time & Glass Museum recently opened in
Downtown Evanston. I would like to introduce
the Halim Time and Glass Museum
of Evanston. The museum showcases
two magnificent collections of time pieces
and stained glass by America’s greatest
artists. Housing more than 11,000 pieces
from around the world, the extensiveness
of the museum’s diverse and wide-ranging
collection is unlike any other in the
United States.
Catch Chicago’s Big Ten team, the
Northwestern Wildcats, last home game
of the season Nov. 18 at Ryan Field when
they host Minnesota. Need some retail
therapy? The merchant districts of Evanston,
Winnetka and Glencoe offer Small
Business Saturday events in conjunction
with the national campaign to support our
small, locally owned boutiques and shops
on Nov. 25. Need a mall fix? Westfield
Old Orchard, Northbrook Court and the
Glen Town Center offer one-stop-shopping,
and dining and a movie.
Holiday bazaars, expos and sales are
also part of this special season. The Women’s
Club of Evanston hosts its Holiday
Bazaar on Nov. 17–18. The Evanston Arts
Center opens its Winter Arts and Crafts
Expo on Nov. 17 and stays open until
Dec. 21. Don’t miss Winnetka’s Red Invitation
Holiday Sale on Dec. 3 and Downtown
Evanston reprises its Warm Bevvy
Walk on Dec. 7.
Special holiday performances in November
include Piccolo’s Theatre Hansel
& Gretel for a one month run beginning
Nov. 16 and Oil Lamp Theatre brings
back its popular, “It’s a Wonderful Life
Radio Play,” beginning on Nov. 30 and
running through Dec. 30. The Salt Creek
Ballet’s, “The Nutcracker,” at the North
Shore Center for Performing Arts in Skokie
Dec. 16-17 as well as two programs
sure to delight kids of all ages, “Pete, the
Cat” on Nov. 30 and “The Magic of Billy
Blagg Live” with two shows on Dec. 30.
More adult theatrical fare can be enjoyed
at Writers Theatre productions of
“Quixote: On the Conquest of Self” running
through Dec. 17 and “The Importance
of Being Earnest,” continuing now
through Dec. 23. Northlight Theatre presents
“The Book of Will” through Dec. 17.
HEART Certified Auto
Care promises same
quality service for locals
Duxler Complete Auto
Care, a community leader
in car repair and automotive
services, proudly announced
that the company
is now HEART Certified
Auto Care. The new name
reflects their commitment
to family values that is intertwined
with their dedication
to treating customers
with compassion and
respect at every step of
their experience with automotive
maintenance and
repairs.
Why HEART? Duxler
is a family-owned business
that has embraced
family values since they
first opened their doors
in 1924. While the Moak
family owns three Duxler
locations, there are other
Duxler stores, so the name
had to be changed in order
to take their mission nationwide.
Capturing their
core values in their new
name, HEART, the company
aspires to share their
culture of caring across the
U.S. They have a mission
to always treat their customers
as they would treat
their neighbors — with
compassion and respect.
“Our new name shows
that we care, in an industry
that is not well known
for its empathic approach
toward customers,” said
Brian Moak, founder and
owner of HEART Certified
Auto Care. “We want
to build off our 90 years
of tradition and move forward
in the technical era to
change how auto service is
delivered. We’re providing
a road map for long-term
planning for your car. Our
approach combines oldfashioned
service with expert
technicians to give our
customers honest, genuine
advice and same day service.”
With the new name,
HEART has established a
new system to create complete
transparency in auto
care. All issues are photographed
to show customers
exactly why repairs
are recommended. The
new system is designed to
provide all the information
needed to make informed
decisions about auto care.
Though there may
have been a few changes,
HEART maintains its same
great personnel in order
continue serving their customers
with the same high
level of expertise and attentiveness
that they were
accustomed to receiving at
Duxler. With complimentary
loaner vehicles and
same-day service, HEART
continues to go the extra
mile to make sure its customers
are taken care of
with as little disruption to
their lives as possible.
The technicians at
HEART Certified Auto
Care are ASE certified and
committed to providing
outstanding service, expert
repairs and an exceptional
customer experience.
When you want more than
just a mechanic, trust in
Knobel confirms the old saying:
‘What goes around, comes around’
Karl Knobel began our
remodeling business in
his basement in 1933. As
the business grew, he built
a three-car garage on his
property, using it as material
storage, a warehouse
and a workshop. When
the business, the number
of employees and the variety
of products and innovations
grew, he built a
showroom with an office
and a large workshop with
warehouse space.
For several years, the
warehouse/workshop was
used mostly to fabricate
Corian kitchen and bath
counter tops, as well as our
normal kitchen and bath
business, which includes
partial and full makeover
projects. Once again, the
variety of products and
their manufactures grew
in number and size. It became
a necessary service
to our clients, as they made
their product choices, to
assist them at some of the
huge showrooms dedicated
to only selling the vast
variety of products that
are now available. So our
business downsized, and
the result was a smaller
showroom without a workshop/warehouse
space.
Now, we have determined
that for a more efficient
and economic operation,
we require even less
space. Therefore, as of Jan.
1, 2018, we are leaving the
building that Karl built in
1948 and moving into an
office space at 1150 Wilmette
Ave., Suite A. It’s
not a garage, and is bigger
than a small basement. It is
the evolution of our business
model. With the help
of computers, smartphones
and the like, we are able
to continue to design, sell
and install beautiful and
functional kitchens and
bathrooms that meet the
individual needs of our clients.
We are still developing
and maintaining lasting
relationships with our
clients, who continue to
recommend us to friends
and neighbors, and we are
still available for free estimates
at (847) 251-4465
and kgkinc@aol.com.
Thank you, people of
Wilmette and the North
Shore communities for
your continued support of
our family business these
past 84 years. Peter & Paul
‘Peter Pan’ continues holiday tradition
For more than three
decades, Music Theater
Works’ December production
has been a North Shore
tradition, bringing families
together to enjoy a favorite
musical over the holidays.
Children, parents and
grandparents alike have
delighted in these annual
presentations of beloved
operettas and Broadway
classics, and many young
people remember them as
a formative experience in
kindling a life-long love of
the theater.
The tradition continues
this year when Music Theater
Works presents the perennially
popular musical,
“Peter Pan,” at Evanston’s
Cahn Auditorium from
Dec. 23-Jan. 1. The story
of the boy who would not
grow up and his swashbuckling
nemesis, Captain
Hook, has been near to
the hearts of theatergoers
since Peter first flew across
a London stage more than
100 years ago. There have
been many versions of this
tale over the years, but this
1954 Broadway musical
adaptation has emerged as
perhaps the most favored
of all.
When a producer approached
Mary Martin,
Broadway’s premiere leading
lady, with the opportunity
to build a new “Peter
Pan” around her abundant
talents, she jumped at the
chance. Martin was so enthusiastic
about the project
that she insisted on assembling
the production team
herself. Hearing the song,
“Young at Heart,” on the
radio, she decided then
and there to hire its lyricist,
an unknown twentysomething
named Carolyn
Leigh. Leigh brought
along her even younger
writing partner, the composer
Morris “Moose”
Charlap. Martin was delighted
with her young
songwriters, and felt they
would bring a youthful
exuberance to a tale that
cried out for just that.
In Broadway legend Jerome
Robbins’ original
staging, “Peter Pan” was
an immediate sensation
on Broadway, and soon
reached an audience of millions
more on NBC television
in 1955. The broadcast
was so popular that the cast
went into the NBC studio
again in 1956 and 1960,
and that 1960 taping was
rerun year after year, introducing
generations to this
evergreen musical.
A whole new generation
can experience it live
this December. Rudy Hogenmiller,
Music Theater
Works’ artistic director,
will stage a magical
new production with a
cast of 33 led by Aubrey
Adams (Paramount Theatre’s
“Mamma Mia!” and
“West Side Story”) taking
the title role, and Music
Theater Works’ longtime
leading man, Larry Adams
(“South Pacific” and
“Kiss Me, Kate”) playing
everyone’s favorite villain,
the irrepressible Captain
Hook. Among the young
performers playing Peter’s
loyal Lost Boys are Wilmette’s
Asher Alcantera
and Daniel Shoemaker.
Roger L. Bingaman will
lead the full orchestra
playing the lush original
Broadway orchestrations.
So whether you’re a
newcomer or a life-long
“Peter Pan” devotee, here
is a chance to be part of an
enduring local tradition,
and fly off to Neverland
this holiday season. Look
out for crocodiles!
“Peter Pan” will run
Saturday, Dec. 23 through
Monday, Jan. 1 at Evanston’s
Cahn Auditorium,
600 Emerson St. The audience
Come and sing with YCT today
Youth Choral Theater of
Chicago (YCT) is a youth
choir that has had its roots in
Chicago’s North Shore for
over 30 years. YCT is focused
on bringing top-notch musical
training to all students seeking
musical education, no matter
their economic background.
Since our beginning, we have
done just that.
YCT stands out from other
youth choirs through our training
process that is deeply rooted
in music education. Through
our four different ensembles,
involving students ages 3-18,
we train students in a continuous
way that helps them advance
through our ensembles
with ease while developing
their musical skills. We accept
students going through a voice
change, which not all youth
choirs in the area do, because
we believe that a well rounded
choir includes all voice types.
Another thing that sets YCT
apart is our adventurous musical
selections. Through commissions
and collaborations
with local composers, YCT
performs pieces that are not
only challenging to sing, but
also expand the musical horizons
of our singers. Last year,
all YCT ensembles sang songs
in Korean, Polynesian, Swahili,
and Spanish. Our music
addressed issues of discrimination,
pride, courage, fear,
love, hope, and exploration.
We believe that it is not only
important to push our students
musically, but also emotionally,
helping them to develop
empathy inspired by what they
are singing.
The YCT season schedule
works hard to eliminate conflicts
with school schedules
in the area. Classes begin in
early September and end in
May with breaks throughout,
including Thanksgiving break,
December holiday break, and
spring break. Throughout the
season, YCT ensembles have
5-6 concerts. Four of these
concerts include all YCT ensembles
while the remaining
concerts are “professional concerts,”
for our older students.
YCT has four ensembles for
students, each with its own
age range, rehearsal, and concert
schedule. Winnetka Children’sChorusis
comprised of
students grades preK (up to 3
years old) through first-grade
and they rehearse from 4:30-
5:30 p.m. Mondays at the Winnetka
Covenant Church.
Concertinais comprised of
students grades 2-3 and rehearses
from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Mondays at the Winnetka Covenant
Church. The Winnetka
Covenant Church is located at
1200 Hibbard
Road, Wilmette. These two
ensembles perform in the four
season concerts that all YCT
ensembles are included in.
Treble Ensemble is comprised
of students grades 4-6
and rehearses from 3-4 p.m.
Sundays at Trinity United
Methodist Church. ChamberChoraleis
comprised of
students grades 7-12 and rehearses
on 4-6 p.m. Sundays
at Trinity United Methodist
Church. TUMC is located
at 1024 Lake St., Wilmette.
These two ensembles perform
on all concerts throughout the
YCT season.
hands-on healing
Kelly Moretta, owner of
Awakenings Holistic Wellness,
helps people move
toward balance and wholeness
with Reiki Bio-field
Energy Therapy.
Reiki is a Japanese
hands-on healing technique
that promotes overall
health and well-being
by restoring balance to the
body’s energy system at
physical, emotional, mental
and spiritual levels.
“Reiki is one of the fastest
growing complementary
healing techniques,”
she explained. “It is widely
practiced in homes,
clinics, hospitals, nursing
homes and spas throughout
the world.”
Clinical studies have
shown that Reiki can relax
the body, relieve pain,
improve sleep, clear toxins
and boost the immune
system. Reiki benefits the
healthy and those with illness
and is valuable for all
ages. It is widely used for
stress management and relaxation.
For people with
chronic illness, regular
treatments will help manage
symptoms and enhance
conventional treatment.
Kelly works with her
clients to customize each
Reiki session based on
their specific needs because
of her passion for
helping others.
Kelly is a Reiki Master
in the Usui/Tibetian, Ascension
and Reiju systems
of healing, among other
modalities. Kelly holds
certification with the International
Association of
Reiki Professionals and
the International Center
for Reiki Training.
As the founder and coordinator
of North Shore
Reiki and Energy Healers
she has created a local
community for both
experienced energy healers
and those interested in
experiencing and learning
about the benefits of Reiki
energy work.
Kelly is also a Reiki
Master Teacher offering
certification classes for
those wanting to enhance
and empower their lives
with this harmonizing energy.
“Reiki’s gentle and nurturing
energy is an ancient
technique that is the wave
of the future,” Kelly said.
“For those looking for a
more holistic approach to
health and wellness the
opportunities are endless.”
Kelly discovered energy
healing through her own
need for healing.
After leading a successful
corporate management
position while raising two
young daughters, she suddenly
found herself in
need of medical help. The
stress and demands of a
fast-paced career and family
life had taken its toll.
She was diagnosed with
an autoimmune condition
similar to Lupus that demanded
she immediately
pay more attention to herself.
Doctors offered a host of
pharmaceuticals, but she
knew the key was in making
life changes and embracing
holistic mind and
body wellness techniques
to heal herself.
“I began practicing yoga
and meditation,” Kelly
said. “Later I received my
first Reiki session, and although
initially skeptical,
I immediately became a
believer and an outspoken
advocate of this transformative
healing art.”
Having experienced the
profound healing that she
did, her passion to share
it with as many people
as possible was ignited.
Kelly left her corporate
career and began studying
different modalities of energy
healing, advancing to
Master Teacher with Reiki
as her chosen specialty.
Along with her healing
treatments, Kelly is also a
certified yoga instructor.
She often combines Reiki,
breath work and meditation
with her clients for a
truly transformative experience.
Top 10 ingredients to have on hand for
easy, casual holiday entertaining
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Grandma in town? Unexpected
guests? No problem!
With a little planning
and the right ingredients,
holiday entertaining is a
snap.
Stock up on these fridge,
freezer and pantry staples a
couple of weeks before the
holiday rush, and you’ll be
ready — no matter who’s
on your doorstep.
• Whole nuts: walnuts, pecans,
almonds, cashews
or pistachios.
• Olives: whole and sliced,
black ripe, green, Kalamata
and stuffed varieties
in cans and jars.
• Cheese: feta, mozzarella,
cheddar, and aged provolone
(tightly wrapped
or vacuum-pack cheeses
can last in the fridge for
several weeks).
• Tortilla chips.
• Salsa in a jar: mild or
medium to please most
palates.
• Whole pita or pita crisps:
pita bread can be frozen.
• Hummus: choose a sealed
refrigerated package.
• Carrots, celery and bell
peppers: whole veggies
keep longer than precut,
and these three are
easy to find in the produce
aisle.
• Frozen cheese pizza:
choose your favorite
brand.
• Olive oil: a kitchen essential.
These 10 basic ingredients
are the building
blocks for five delicious,
party-worthy spreads that
can be prepped in 15 minutes
or less! Here’s how:
Fast Cheese and Olive Tray
Cube cheddar cheese,
aged provolone, and mozzarella.
On a platter, make
rows of alternating colors
with cubed white cheese
next to a row of green
Pearls Specialties Garlic
Stuffed Queen olives, then
a row of darker cheese and
a row of deep purple Kalamata
olives. Present with
toothpicks and napkins for
easy self-service.
Pizza-tizers
A simple cheese pizza is
a canvas for appetizer art!
Add fresh, thinly sliced
bell pepper, shredded
mozzarella cheese, and a
generous topping of sliced
black ripe olives. Bake,
then cut into mini-slices
or small squares and serve
on wooden cutting boards.
Drizzle with olive oil.
Mediterranean Medley
Place store-bought hummus
into a colorful dipping
bowl. Drizzle with olive oil
and top with sliced Pearls
Kalamata olives. On a
large platter, surround the
bowl with equal amounts
of pita triangles, carrot
and celery sticks, plus bell
pepper strips. Serve with a
bowl of Kalamata olives
and cubed feta cheese.
Cheese and Olive Kebabs
Alternate cubes of
mozzarella or provolone
cheese and any variety of
olives on small bamboo
skewers and serve on a
tray, alongside pita triangles
and hummus. Expert
tip: Cut pita bread in
triangles, brush with olive
oil, warm in oven 350F for
5-6 minutes.
Olive Nachos
Fill a cast iron pan with
tortilla chips, generously
grate cheddar cheese over
the top, and slide under
the broiler until the cheese
bubbles. Spoon salsa on
top, sprinkle with sliced
Pearls California black
ripe olives, and serve on a
heat-resistant board.
Extra Credit: Easy Pleasers
Sometimes the simplest
flavors are best. Fill several
small, colorful bowls
with Pearls Specialties
olives, crunchy nuts, and
cubed cheeses. A sprig of
parsley, thyme or rosemary
adds a decorative touch.
The key to holiday entertaining
is being prepared
with a few simple ingredients
so you can spend
more time with guests and
less time in the kitchen!
DEAR FRIENDS
As the holidays approach, I have been
reflecting on this past year when we
have witnessed some of the greatest
humanitarian crises of our time. Between
devastating hurricanes to the south and
wildfires on the west coast, so many lives
have been affected. And many have lost
everything – yet need to find the strength
and courage to carry on.
I have been blessed with a wonderful
family, loyal staff and clientele. I would like
to invite you all to participate with me in
donating to the charity of your choice to help
those around the world.
We at Pascal pour Elle are giving a percentage
of our proceeds to help those in need. Please
