We believe in

OUR COMMUNITY

When children are diagnosed with critical illnesses,

families are often forced to stay apart, separated just when

they need each other most. During the COVID-19 pandemic,

we all learned what it meant to be there for someone. And

we learned that lesson the hard way: by not being there. We

missed moments of celebration and moments of heartache.

We all got the smallest taste of why the work of RMHC

is so important. Over the decades, RMHC has been there,

keeping millions of families together when they need to

travel for their children’s medical care.

In March 2020, to reduce the spread of infection, we stopped

accepting new families and suspended our Day Pass and

Volunteer Programs. But you, our donors, made it possible

for us to continue serving our families already here with

limited staff. Because of your generosity, our families had

a safe place to stay while their children were being

treated at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

In July 2020, we welcomed a few families back, with new

Covid-19 protocols in place. By September 2020, we were

able to welcome our remote team members back into the

House, but due to the limitation of dedicated bathrooms, we

have only been able to host a maximum of 19 families with us

each night.

RMHC Charleston has been fortunate to keep our doors

open and operational, and with zero positive Covid-19

cases reported to date. Once our community reaches a 50%

full vaccination rate, we look forward to welcoming more

families into the House. Thanks to you, our community,

we’re fulfilling our mission, and we are extremely grateful.

To quote the Carey family, “Thank you for all that you do.

You helped my family tremendously when we needed it

most. You not only gave us a place to stay close to my son

but showed so much kindness. We are truly thankful.”

TheWERKEMA FAMILYStory

KEEPING FAMILIES OurImpact CLOSE ®

When our daughter turned 3 weeks old, we were

told that our baby was experiencing Supraventricular

Tachycardia (SVT) and she was immediately transported

to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital where we

knew she would receive great care.

By the grace of God we were able to get the last available

room at RMHC Charleston that night. We were told to

expect a long stay due to our daughter’s heart and lungs

failing and it would be a long recovery. At the time, we

only had a few changes of clothing and some personal

items with us but RMHC Charleston helped provide the

rest. We didn’t have to worry about food, toiletries, where

to shower, where to wash clothing, etc. and that was a

bigger relief than many know.

“As parents we were able to focus

solely on our daughter for the 6

weeks we were there and that

was the biggest blessing of all.”

–The Werkema Family

As parents we were able to focus solely on our daughter

for the 6 weeks we were there and that was the biggest

blessing of all. We can never repay our gratitude for RMHC

Charleston as it far exceeded our expectations, and while

our daughter is now almost 2 years old, as parents we are

beyond excited to share with her how blessed we were

at RMHC Charleston. Thank you from the bottom of our

hearts, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Charleston!

“Due to the diligence

of RMHC Charleston

leadership, the House

was able to stay open

throughout COVID. This

allowed us at MUSC

Shawn Jenkins

Children’s Hospital and

Pearl Tourville Women’s

Pavilion to continue to

provide critical services

to children while

supporting families

and their needs. The

fact that there were

no COVID issues within

the House is

tremendous and a

reflection of the

excellence in care.

We are grateful for

what RMHC Charleston

does for children

and families.”

“The past year was a time of great uncertainty for all of us,

and - like everyone else - I was looking for someplace where

I felt a sense of community. One place that provided a

community for me during the pandemic was and is the

Ronald McDonald HOME (as I call it, since that’s what it feels

like). It has been and continues to be an honor to help the

families and also the RMH Charleston Team for the past

two and half years.”

A huge thank you

to our in-kind donors who

contribute wish list items, cook

meals for our families, and offer

supplies and services to the House!

In 2020, these gifts totaled:

“We have been supporting the efforts of RMHC Charleston since we moved to

Charleston over four years ago. We immediately noticed how compassionately

the staff and volunteers welcome families by offering a ‘Home-away-fromhome’

– freshly prepared meals, comfortable rooms, a place to relax, and even

a House dog – just steps from the hospital. We are so grateful that this warm

environment provides the critical network of support and love allowing parents

to focus on the health of their child.

Our Community continues to help our families, even during a

pandemic. Several groups and individuals provided meals from local

restaurants and catering groups to make sure our families had dinner

every single night. Hosting a Facebook fundraiser, gathering friends

for a wish list drive, collecting pop tabs, and making On-the-Go Meal

Kits are just a few examples of how our amazing community helps our

families. Your thoughtfulness and time, and the funds you raise, make

be a business Partner with RMHC Charleston.

My wife introduced me to the House, as she is a

Board Member, and I found out how important

the ‘Home-away-from-home’ is for so many

families with desperately ill children. Being a part of Ronald

McDonald House is such a pleasure knowing that I am contributing in
