HEALTH CARE IS
HAPPENING HERE
{ By Bill Romanelli }
The promise of Folsom’s future is on vivid display as the region’s largest
health care systems begin construction on an array of new buildings, service
offerings, and staffing. Folsom will always be “Distinctive by Nature,”
but there’s no denying the growth in this area is also making the city an
integrated health care hub.
Dignity Health is moving forward with plans on a 30-acre parcel in the
Folsom Ranch area for a new 530,000-square foot medical campus that
will ultimately include an outpatient surgery center, imaging, urgent care,
infusion services, and a 300-bed hospital. Phase One—a 66,000-square-foot
medical office building—should be complete in 2026.

“As Folsom and the surrounding area continue to grow, we’re
prepared to grow with it,” says Brittany Bresler, Dignity’s vice
president of strategy and development. “Folsom is also our home,
and we are grateful to serve the health care needs of the community
today and in the future.”
UC Davis Health is preparing its 35-acre parcel at East Bidwell Street
and Highway 50 for the first of three projects: a 112,000-square-foot
outpatient clinic, which will include primary and specialty care, lab
services, ophthalmology, imaging, and infusion suites. The $171 million
project will be completed by 2025, followed by a new surgery center,
hotel, and micro-hospital with an emergency department and 30 beds.
“We’re excited to expand and innovate patient care in Folsom,” says
Mike Condrin, interim chief administrator for UC Davis Medical Center,
via press release. “The beauty of this project is we can adapt and grow
with the community.” UC Davis Health is also collaborating with AKT
Development to develop a first-in-the-world “Community for Health
and Independence” in the region.
Kaiser Permanente is advancing on its proposed 260,000
square foot Comprehensive Care Center at its property on Palladio
Parkway. The Comprehensive Care Center will include a new
surgery center, urgent care, and more than 90 clinical offices,
along with pharmacy and imaging services. Kim Menzel, Kaiser
Permanente area manager, says the facility will add an estimated
400 permanent jobs to the community.
Sutter Health is also expanding in Folsom, with plans for a
100,000-square foot ambulatory care center to be developed in
partnership with Elliott Homes. When completed it will offer a full
complement of primary and specialty care services, including family
medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. “We already see a higher
patient need here, and we’re anticipating that as Folsom continues
to grow that need will grow with it,” says Ryan Loufbourrow, Sutter
Health government affairs director.
With so many health care projects in the pipeline, each leading
to new high-paying jobs and innumerable ancillary services, local
business leaders are bullish about Folsom’s future. “These health
care developments are a catalyst for economic vitality,” says Laura
Fickle, economic development consultant for the Folsom Chamber of
Commerce/Choose Folsom. “These projects will create a ripple effect
that invigorates local businesses, attracts top-tier talent, and elevates
the city’s profile as a great place to live, work, and play.”
or morning walk are considered self-care
rituals. If you’re looking for a few new ways
{ By Linda Holderness }
the past year or so, it’s time to take a fresh
stroll through the birthplace of our city. You
may be surprised at the changes. Everything
old is new again. Folsom’s storied past, with
its Gold Rush and railroad roots, is still the
area’s centerpiece. But history isn’t defined
by one generation, and Folsom History, the
rebranded name for the Folsom Historical
Society, has reinterpreted these early
milestones for 21st-century visitors. In the
process, a compelling and unifying thread
has been pulled: Innovation.
American River Bike Trail (Jedediah
Smith Memorial Trail):
If you haven’t visited Historic Folsom in
Innovation shaped the success of Folsom
from its beginning. The city’s founder,
Joseph Folsom, planned a railroad town
that would endure after the gold panned
out. The man he chose to survey his town,
Theodore D. Judah, mapped a rail route
through the Sierra when experts said it
couldn’t be done. The Folsom Powerhouse
pioneered the long-distance transmission of
electricity. We built bridges that challenged
norms, lured high-tech employers before
most people understood the term, and now
the Northern California Innovation District
fosters entrepreneurs from around the
world in the century-old Granite School.
With the new focus has come some
restructuring. Folsom History, under
Executive Director Rita Mukherjee
Hoffstadt, oversees three museums: the
Folsom History Museum, The Square
(formerly Pioneer Village), and the future
Chinese Heritage Museum. Here is a brief
look at them:
Folsom History Museum
The new permanent exhibit, A History of
Innovation, is complemented by annual
rotating exhibits. 100 Years at Folsom
High just made way for Made in Folsom, a
celebration of people and businesses that
have shaped Folsom history. The “quilt
corner” keeps alive Folsom’s antique quilt
2023-2024 // CHOOSEFOLSOM.COM 47

tradition with rotating displays from the museum’s collection. The
gift shop is packed with items related to all eras of Folsom’s past.
The future includes expanding the space for more programming.
The Square
Mukherjee Hoffstadt calls this a “makerspace” where people
will gather, as in a traditional town square, to mingle and try
their hand at gold panning and crafts or explore old farm
equipment and a real caboose. School visitors make and then
take wood-burned coasters. Teen volunteers lead many of the
maker activities. Probably the biggest draw on The Square is the
working blacksmith forge. Here, professional smithies educate
you about their craft as they shape “mild steel” pieces to sell;
blacksmiths don’t work with iron because it’s too soft. A “hidden
secret,” Mukherjee Hoffstadt says, is that the forge offers
training to become a journeyman blacksmith.
Chinese Heritage Museum
Not yet open, this museum, in the home of Howard and Mabel
Chan, will honor Folsom’s Chinese families. Folsom’s population
during the Gold Rush was one-quarter Chinese, and during the
1880s, its Chinese community was the second largest in California.
With two years under her belt as executive director, Hoffstadt, too,
embraces innovation. “We want to give people a story,” she says,
“not just dates but why things happened and continue to change.
What we do today will be the past tomorrow.”
ICE CREAM
5 SWEETS SPOTS
{ By Julie Ryan }
Legend has it that the origin of ice cream and
other frozen desserts began in ancient China.
The icy cold treats made their way to America
in the 1700s and have evolved through
the years, from ice cream sandwiches and
gelato to popsicles, snow cones, and more.
Whatever “cool” confection you’re craving,
Folsom has plenty of sweet spots!
Family-owned and voted #1 ice cream in
the Sacramento area for over 40 years,
Leatherby’s is known for their gigantic
sundaes and kid-friendly atmosphere. From
Daddy Dave’s Banana Split to Matthews’s
Small Sundae, there’s something for
everyone. Most dishes are shareable, too!
2455 Iron Point Road, Folsom, 916-510-2373,
Handel’s offers over 100 flavors of delicious
ice cream, so the only problem you’ll have is
deciding which one you want! They also have
vegan, fat-free, and sugar-free options, in
addition to refreshing sorbets. Try a Handel
Pop—vanilla, chocolate, or mint chocolate
chip ice cream covered in rich gourmet
chocolate and served on a stick. 1011
Brain Freeze!
You’re enjoying a
frozen treat when
suddenly you feel
intense pain in your
head. It doesn’t last
long, but it can stop
you from taking
your next bite. The
scientific term is
“sphenopalatine
ganglioneuralgia,”
but we’ll stick with
“brain freeze.” To get
rid of it, try drinking
something warm,
placing your tongue
on the roof of your
mouth, or tilting
your head back for
about 10 seconds.
Kona Ice
You’ll find Pink Ice Cream Cart cruising
around Folsom in their Barbie-colored
cart full of over 30 yummy ice cream
treats, from fudge bars and popsicles to
snow cones, ice cream sandwiches, and
more. They’re also available for parties,
corporate events, and fundraisers. 916-
220-6327, pinkicecreamcart.com
Mobile dessert is the best idea and Kona Ice
is another one you’ll find in neighborhoods
and at events. Walk up to the window, order
your Kona, then add whatever flavors you
want. Tiger’s Blood? Blue Raspberry? Groovy
Grape? Ninja Cherry? The choice is yours!
Just like the real deal, shaved snow is
light and fluffy. At Vampire Penguin,
it’s also creamy and available in ample
flavors. Pick your poison and choose some
toppings or go with one of the menu items
like Strawberry Cheesecake, Smoreo’s,
or Peanut Butter Cup. Leave the guilt
behind; shaved snow has four times fewer
calories and sugar compared to some ice
creams and frozen yogurts. 420 Palladio
