IN THE CHAIR
with Simon Negus
A warm welcome to Chessington / Hook Utd
for today's Cherry Red Records Combined
Counties League Cup fixture.
Welcome to The Racecourse ground for tonight‘s cup
game and a special welcome to our visitors from
Chessington & Hook.
As I’m sure many of you did, I listened to the latest
government lockdown announcement with interest
and although at the time of writing we haven’t
received any further clarification from the FA I think
it’s fair to say we are assuming that grassroots
football will come to a temporary halt from
Wednesday evening for a few weeks. It is impossible
for us as a club to argue against the expert opinions
that will have been used to come to this decision -
what we can do is continue to make football at Ascot
Utd as safe as possible until the new restrictions
come into play.
As a club we are well positioned to ride out this
further period of uncertainty and will continue to plan
and invest for the rest of the season. I have no doubts
that we will still manage to complete the season, even
if that takes us into May or June.
The priority for us as a club is to it ensure that all of
our members are safe and well – if anyone needs
support from the club during this period and in the
build up to Christmas please make sure you do get in
touch with the club and we will help in whatever way
we can. It’s at times like these that community clubs
such as ours really have an opportunity to make a
difference over and beyond what happens on the
pitch.
Let’s hope we all see a good game this evening and
please follow all of the guidelines to help us get back
to some sort of normality as soon as possible.
Hope you all enjoy the game tonight…
Simon.
FROM THE DUGOUT
Jamie Tompkins
First Team Manager
Welcome to the players, officials
and supporters of Chessington /
Hook Utd. Enjoy the game!
Hello and welcome to Chessington and Hook FC players, staff and club committee and to all
supporters in attendance this evening Combined Counties League Cup fixture.
As our last fixture before lockdown is imposed on us all again, we hope you all get your football fix at
the Racecourse Ground and enjoy the game. We wish you all good health over the next few weeks and
thank you for your continued support.
Recent form and results have been steady and performances have improved but we are still not yet
where we want to be and maybe the lockdown will be a blessing in disguise for us. Our FA Vase exit on
Saturday was a disappointment and we are left to focus on our league and league cup campaign,
whenever it is we will return.
Our visitors this evening started their season well in division 1 but recent form has seen them slip
down the table. However, when you play higher opposition you always raise your game and we expect
to see an improved performance.
We have made a few changes from Saturday and provided opportunities for players to get their last
few minutes for a few weeks.
Thank you to our sponsors, club officials and volunteers for all the fantastic work they do for our
football club.
Enjoy the game!
ON COURSE!
With Programme Editor Neal Jeffs
Welcome to the players, officials and
supporters of Chessington / Hook Utd for
this Cherry Red Records Combined
Counties League Cup match.
Happy
reading, and
enjoy the
game! Neal
So, here we are for our final game for at least a month as we are most likely to lose
grassroots football again. There has been no official announcement at the time of
writing this but it is safe to assume we will all be at home twiddling our fingers on
Saturday afternoon and trying to wriggle out of the domestic chores once again!
Anyway, it is what it is, and so tonight is a chance to savour the action and hopefully
the lads can keep their unbeaten league cup run going – one which stretches back
to 2017 if you count only the main league cup competition of either the Hellenic or
Combined Counties Leagues. If I had enough time I would have published the current
state of play with the competition but all you need to know is that this is the 2nd
round and a lot of Premier Division sides have already tumbled out, probably
because they rotated their squads and/or fielded weakened sides ahead of
important FA Vase matches last weekend.
COMBINED
COUNTIES
LEAGUE DIV 1
TABLE (TOP 8
OF 20 TEAMS)
Tonight’s visitors were Premier Division mainstays between 2003 and 2014, before
they dropped down to Division 1 in the same season that Spelthorne Sports came up
to the Premier Division as undefeated Champions. Chessington won immediate
promotion back – and then were immediately relegated again – and they are now in
their fifth season in Division 1 since 2016. This season, their recent form has dipped
after a good start, but they did take the scalp of Farnham Town early-on; Farnham
now leading the table having only lost to The Blues (that's our opponents tonight
BTW). But whatever the form, the score, the weather or whatever else, we should just
enjoy tonight’s game and then see what the next month holds. Whatever it does hold,
remember to keep yourselves safe, and we wish our visitors an enjoyable stay with
us and safe journey home too! Neal

FOOTBALL IN BERKSHIRE
Here, Tom Canning writes his weekly grass-roots update for programme editors. His
website, Football in Berkshire, is a staple for local grass-roots football.
A big thanks
It’s been a weird few weeks for me. At the start of October I welcomed a gorgeous baby girl
in to my life and all the related awake time, poo and everything else you need to learn
quickly - but don’t worry this isn’t a new parenting column in your programme notes!
What it’s meant is that I haven’t been to a game in over 30 days - which is probably the
longest period of time I’ve spent away from the game since I was a teenager (pre-season
doesn’t count because as any volunteer knows, non-league football never ever stops).
And Football in Berkshire never stops either. We’ve been a bit slower this month but I
wanted to take these notes just to thank everyone who’s picked up the slack for me while
I’ve not been about.
Rob Davies, Abi Ticehurst, Steve Gabb, Tony Hardy, Alicia Povey and Neil Maskell have made
some brilliant contributions over the month, writing, audio and visually and our amazing
photographers have been supplying great images, from Neil Graham, Richard Claypole,
Hannah Cooper, Richard Milam and Andrew Batt amongst many others have gone football
crazy and I’m ever so grateful to all of them. The site has grown beyond my wildest dreams
and is now read by 24,000 people a month accessing our news, reports, podcasts and more
on the great non-league game in Berkshire - which I think you’ll agree is ridiculous!
So while this isn’t a typical weekly set of programme notes, as I prepare to hopefully (Covid,
tears (and tier’s) permitting) get back out to a game at the weekend, I wanted to just offer
my thanks to all our readers and contributors, I know Duds would be proud!
Lastly, we are always looking for new contributors to the site, if you have any ideas or would
just like to get involved, drop me an email to tom.canning@footballinbracknell.co.uk
ASCOT UNITED ALLIED U18
Under the stewardship of Josh Nice and his management team, the Ascot United Allied U18s have
kicked off the 11th season of Allied Counties football at The Racecourse. Josh, the manager, has
himself represented The Yellamen at Allied Counties, U23 and First Team levels. His management
team comprises assistant manager Chris Thompson, a former coach with Maidenhead United FC, and
current first team star James Richardson, who also has a coaching role.
The team represents the pinnacle of youth football at Ascot and the squad boasts a number of players
who have been at the club since Soccer School from the tender age of five. These include Sam, Evans,
Tom Bailey, Lawson Jones, Alex Goderski, and Ryan Pandhor, and three of them have even featured for
the first team this season, being Sam, Tom and Lawson.
This season, Surrey Youth League U16 stars, Alex Hall and Ollie Graham made their debut in the U18s,
proving the saying “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough”. And, his team trains alongside the first
team to bolster their development.
The team have played two league matches so far – registering a win and a defeat – although they will
now wait until December to resume their campaign after a second pandemic lockdown. Meanwhile,
they also played two matches in the FA Youth Cup campaign and their run was ended by an extremely
strong Didcot Town side (0-1) after recording an earlier win at Oxford City by the same scoreline.
MATCH REPORT ROUNDUP
NEWHAVEN END ASCOT FA VASE HOPES AT FIRST HURDLE
Dockers return to haunt Yellamen on Halloween
Saturday 31st October 2020 - Buildbase FA Vase First Round - Newhaven 4 - 1
Ascot United
Ascot United saw their FA vase interests end in East Sussex on Saturday afternoon as Newhaven brushed them aside
at a boggy, wind-swept Trafalgar Ground. In a match where the kick-off was delayed a groundstaff worked to clear a
waterlogged corner of the pitch, the home side mastered the heavy conditions to run out comfortable 4-1 winners.
The Yellamen had lost at Newhaven in the second round stage of the competition four years ago and whilst only
captain Louis Bouwers survived from the Ascot squad on that day, the home side still had lethal marksman Lee
Robinson in their ranks. Robinson broke Ascot’s hearts with a late winner back then, and it took him just 22 minutes
to haunt the visitors once again when he tapped home at the far post to put his side two goals up.
Earlier-on, it was only 22 seconds before the game’s first chance – a Jonny Denton effort which sailed wide after Ascot
had gone at Newhaven straight from the kick-off.
After their early ascendancy, Ascot were quickly forced to retreat and found themselves one-nil down after nine
minutes when Charlie Bennett scooped into the top left after Alfie Rogers had played the ball into the box from a shortcorner
routine. Robinson then doubled the lead after James Jefferies broke clear and picked out Rogers to cut the
ball back for the easiest of finishes, but Ascot responded well and soon found themselves back in it.
And, it was James Richardson who deservedly cut the deficit just before the half-hour mark when he finished at the
far post after Taylor Morgan had raced onto Harry Laflin’s through ball and rounded Jake Buss.
At the other end, The Dockers’ Charlie Bennett might have done better than screw a volley wide when well-placed but
The Yellamen would change ends with a glimmer of hope after the earlier onslaught.
As in the first half, Ascot began strongly – and would create chances – but they never really threatened Buss on an
ultimately frustrating afternoon. Defender Dan Bailey planted two carbon-copy free headers over the bar from a
brace of Denton corners – 48 and 66 minutes played – whereas Harry Laflin could only fire wide from distance in the
middle of those chances and the energetic Richardson’s shot deflected wide later on, but Ascot simply couldn’t
score.
By that point the game had already run away from them, largely due to hugely impressing left-back Ian Robinson who
gave George Lock a torrid afternoon and was equally adept with left and right foot as he surged forwards at will. And,
when his neat-one two ended with Lock being shown a clean pair of heels, the covering Bouwers was also left for
dead, and he raced into the box and slotted into the bottom right; 53 minutes played.
‘Keeper Sam Gray would keep Ascot in the hunt with good saves to deny both Jefferies and Seb Saunders, before
producing a sensational late save to claw Ian Robinson’s audacious chip away, but namesake Lee would have the last
word – just as he did four year earlier – with an injury time tap-in to complete the rout. Ascot will now focus on the
league, as goes the adage.
Ascot United: Gray, Lock, Masters, Carey (Evans 46’), Bouwers, D. Bailey, Laflin (Haworth 68’), Denton, Morgan,
Richardson, Higgs (Davies 81’). Subs unused: Berry, Andrady

CLUB HISTORY - ASCOT UNITED
Ascot United as we know it, was founded in 1965 by a men’s team who played their games at Sunninghill with “after
match meetings” in The Wells in Cheapside village (now Mikado’s). teams playing as long ago as 1928 under the name
Ascot United but nothing to link them directly to the current club. In 1965, the club had gained permission from the Ascot
Racecourse Trustees to convert the land east of coach park 10 into a football pitch. A wooden clubhouse was built and
this team went on to win many prestigious trophies in the years that followed.
Various youth teams represented Ascot United over the years up to 1988, and 1992 the East Berks 7-a-side Association
was formed by our then Chairman Keith Wicks introducing small-sided junior games and having disbanded in 1980 the
men’s team also reformed. The club continued to grow, entering into partnership with Charters School and being
awarded FA Charter Standard status in 2004. The men’s senior team enjoyed early success through the East Berks
League gaining continued promotions to the Senior division and winning various Cups including the Fielden Charity Cup
in 1996/7. 2001 saw the 1st team join the Reading Senior League and winning the Evening Post Senior Cup at the Madejski
Stadium in 2006. Promotion to the Hellenic League soon followed in 2007, followed by promotion to the Hellenic Premier
Division in 2009. The club today has grown to become one of the largest Community football clubs in the UK with over
1000 registered players and over 70 teams playing every weekend embracing all ages and abilities from 5 year olds
through to Vets. A new clubhouse opened in September 2010, together with an improved main pitch, floodlights and a
stand.
The club has enjoyed much success at all levels particularly in the Ladies and Girls Section where they are regularly
winners of leagues and county Cups. Our senior Ladies won promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern Region
Women’s’ Football League in 2017-18 and consolidated their position with a mid-table finish in 2018-19. Meanwhile, 2018-
19 was an outstanding one for our junior Boys’ teams who won an array of county cups at various age groups, a feat we’ve
rarely previously achieved.
The past decade has been hugely successful for our first team; our debut in the FA Cup in 2011 attracted 1,149 people to
the Racecourse on a Friday evening where the famous trophy itself was on display and the match was streamed live on
Facebook. Between 2012-13 and 2015-16 we reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase twice, enjoyed two top-three
finishes in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division, and won both the Bluefin Sport Challenge Cup and Perpetua
Press Floodlit Cup. More recently, our players’ development took the spotlight, as a host of Yellamen have enjoyed
success with other local sides and many of our talented development players stepped up into the first team. After
finishing 2017-18 in style, in 2018-19 new manager Jamie Tompkins led his side to the top of the table for long spells,
winning two team-of-the-month awards, and finishing with league cup glory once again by defeating Windsor 3-1 on 6th
May.
We were transferred into the Combined Counties League for the 2019-20 season, playing on our new 3G pitch facility,
which transformed the club by facilitating more of our teams’ matches and training at The Racecourse. The stronger
platform facilitated further player development, and Jamie’s young side would lead the table for long periods before
establishing what looked like a title-winning margin at the top shortly before the league was aborted due to the global
virus pandemic.
Jamie has retained most of his squad for the 2020-21 season and they are eager to make another attempt at winning the
title. One of the benefits of not winning promotion last season is that we will re-acquaint with some of the new friends we
made along the way! But most importantly, the club is committed to ensuring the health and safety of players, officials
and supporters so that grassroots football can continue to thrive in the way that it should.
CLUB HISTORY - CHESSINGTON / HOOK UTD
Formed as Chessington F.C. in 1921, the club entered the Kingston & District League and within two years were
the Division 4 Champions. Further honours proved elusive through the divisions until 1961 winning the Premier
Division. By 1968, the club had moved to the Premier Division of the Middlesex League, which was their first
taste of intermediate football. hey ended that first season as Runners-up and were consequently admitted to
the Surrey County Senior League – a major milestone in the club’s history. Even more significantly, they became
Division 1 Champions in the 1970-71 season. In 1972, the club joined the Home Counties League and continued to
play in the League until the formation of the current Combined Counties League in 1978.That season, the most
successful in the club’s history, when they brought home seven trophies! Despite the successes of the late 70’s,
the club’s fortunes declined alarmingly in the early 80’s. Relegation to the Surrey Premier League was quickly
followed by further demotion to the Surrey Combination, Bankruptcy was a real possibility. The introduction of a
new management team in 1986, led by Chairman Graham Ellis, (of Hook United & Hook Youth) saw a rebirth of the
club and return to former glory under the banner ‘Chessington & Hook United FC’ & ex-skipper Eric Wicks as
Manager & Grahams son Paul assistant.By 1994, they were back in the Surrey Premier league, finishing 3rd and
two years later, go one step further, finishing 2nd behind Virginia Water by just one point to make a welcome
return to Senior football in the Combined Counties League. Eric stands down due to work commitments, Paul
takes the reins. Chessington played through to the League Cup Final in their first season versus Ash United at
Woking, only to lose 6-1. They finished third in the Premier division ‘04/05 and the season after, made the 4th
round of the F,A. Vase, beaten 2-1 by finalists Cammell Laird at home in front of some 500 supporters.
Work was carried out during the close season to bring the ground up to level five standard and they now
possess a stand for 200 spectators and also erected a covered area behind one goal. Season 2006/07 had
Chessington languishing in the relegation zone but 15 matches unbeaten saw them finish a creditable 10th
position. 2007/08 season saw us use a huge number of players who had us playing some good attacking
football, but the weather caught us napping, & with only one match in eight weeks, finally finished the season
once again mid table.
2008/09 & we introduce a new manager after Paul Norris decided to step down after 10 years. Enter Glynn
Stephens as manager. Glynn had been reserve team manager at Ashford Town (Middx) after a glittering playing
career amongst some of the top Ryman teams, but he took to it admirably & took the team to its second highest
finish, 6th, since we entered this competition. Four years later & sadly, Glynn found the going tough & halfway
through the 20011/12 season, parted company with the Club. In for Glynn came once again……...Paul (Nogsy)
Norris!! Nogsy changed the team around in an effort to save the Club from relegation, but all in vain as we
finished third from bottom, only Banstead Athletic & Mole Valley SCR were below us, but our fate was in the
hands of a relegated Whyteleafe team who were bottom of Ryman South but decided not to come down to CCL
but enter the Kent League leaving us free to continue our quest for success in this League. 2013/14, Nogsy left
the Club in October that year, leaving his assistant Andrew Ellis to take charge. Andrew brought in ex CHUFC
player Darren Woods to assist him but to no avail as we were relegated to Division One finishing bottom of the
Premier Division after flirting that position for the previous two years. Division One was probably a breath of
fresh air & Darren & Andy took it on the chin & set out to earn promotion back to the Premier Division but with 19
games to play, it seemed a bridge too far until a run of just two defeats & two draws & a dramatic final game of
the season when, 1-3 down at HT v Alton Town & Worcester Park beating Banstead, it all seemed in vain until a
strange twist of fortune as the lads scored four 2nd half goals & Banstead won at Worcester Park to send the
mammoth crowd of over 350 delirious, that means we finish third in the table above Worcester Park & back in
the Premier Division, unfortunately, we couldn’t sustain our Premier Division status, once again, our pitch lets us
down leaving us to play 16 games in 34 days, a bridge too far as we end up 2nd bottom to be relegated to Div One.
Fifth in the following season meant we’d be once again playing Division One in 2017/18.
