Welcome to the Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival 2019
A letter from
Mayor Charlie Pecaro
As Mayor of Highwood, I want to welcome you and
your family to our momentous 10th Annual Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival!
The City of Highwood and Celebrate Highwood have
once again partnered with Make-A-Wish Illinois to help
grant wishes for kids with critical illnesses in Illinois.
We know that a wish experience is a game changer for
wish children and their families, and we are so pleased to
support this cause. To date, we’ve donated $140,000 to
Make-A-Wish Illinois and can’t wait to watch that number
grow this year!
When we held our first Pumpkin Festival 10 years ago,
bringing community together was our main goal. Now I
am proud to say that, as a 501(c)(3), Celebrate Highwood’s
mission of raising funds for worthy non-profit organizations
through its festivals and events has brought our City great
partnerships with Make-A-Wish Illinois and other local
charities.
I’m so pleased to have witnessed how that goal has
evolved from building strong community spirit and support,
to establishing Highwood as the prime entertainment
destination for dining, festivals and events on Chicago’s
North Shore. It’s happened through inter-organizational
collaboration, sharing resources and promoting the City
as a wonderful place to live, eat and play. I’m so proud of
our great community.
The Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival is an integral
part of our community and has helped put the City of
Highwood on the map. Our entire community comes together
to host this event and we love paying it forward.
With that being said, The Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival
is dependent on your participation. So, carve lots
of pumpkins, sign up to volunteer, participate in the Superhero
5K Run/Walk, and don’t miss our nightly lightings
as the Fest goes dark while a Make-A-Wish family
helps us light the grand jack-o-lantern walls. It will be
the highlight of your Fall season, I promise.
I’ll be out there all weekend, so look out for me on the
festival grounds and be sure to stop and say hello.
Thank you for 10 years of community building. Here
is to many more!
Charlie Pecaro
Mayor Charlie Pecaro
A letter from Make-A-Wish Illinois
On behalf of the hundreds of children and their families
who will experience the healing power of a wish this
year, thank you for supporting the 10th Annual Great
Highwood Pumpkin Fest.
As you may know, together with volunteers and supporters
like you, Make-A-Wish Illinois creates lifechanging
wishes for children with critical illnesses. A
wish experience can help a child cope with a critical
medical condition, replacing fear with confidence, sadness
with joy and anxiety with hope – helping children
battling critical illnesses see the impossible as possible.
Wish children are your neighbors, your children’s
classmates, your friends and your relatives because unfortunately,
critical illnesses happen in every neighborhood.
Through Make-A-Wish, the community can rally
behind these courageous children and their families, filling
them with hope and giving them strength as they experience
the joy of a wish.
Make-A-Wish Illinois relies on the generous contributions
of individuals, corporations, foundations and people
like you who attend events that support the mission.
Every day in Illinois, three families learn their child is
diagnosed with a critical illness. Your support is greatly
appreciated to help make sure that those children can begin
their wish journey when they need it most.
If you know of a child with a critical illness, we invite
you to inquire about Make-A-Wish for a child on
our website at www.illinois.wish.org/refer or by calling
312.602.WISH (9474).
We are sure you will enjoy all of the wonderful things
that the Highwood Pumpkin Festival has to offer. You
can also feel very good knowing that your participation
means hope and strength to wish children in our area!
Best Wishes,
community spirit, and establish Highwood as THE
Make-A-Wish granted Kate’s
with cancer in 2013, and more.
“Every year The Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival event
organizers come together to create
a memorable weekend for the
greater community,” says Michael
Goldstein, Co-President of
Celebrate Highwood. “It’s amazing
what we can do together
when it comes to celebrating and
rallying around a good cause.”
In support of all past, present
and future Make-A-Wish Illinois
families, organizers of the Great
Highwood Pumpkin Festival
have created several ways for the
community to come together and
support this great cause to grant
even more wishes for Make-A-
Wish Illinois kids.
Participate in the Superhero 5K
A History of The Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival
Celebrating 10 years
of community
building in 2019!
In it’s momentous 10th year,
The Great Highwood Pumpkin
Festival has helped put the
City of Highwood on the map
and raised over $260,000 for
charities over the past five years,
$140,000 of which was raised
over the past three years for
Make-A-Wish Illinois.
In 1998, Highwood Alderman
Eric Falberg was living on the
east coast when he and his wife
attended the original Pumpkin
Festival in Keene, New Hampshire.
He was so enthralled by
the spectacle of the walls of lit
jack-o-lanterns he had a vision,
years later as the head of Highwood’s
Special Events Committee,
to bring The Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival to his
hometown. He helped launch the
‘Prelude to Pumpkin Fest’ that
piggybacked the popular weekly
Wednesday night Highwood
Evening Market in October 2009
and with only three weeks to
promote, the community pulled
together and carved out over
1,200 jack-o-lanterns that lit up a
wall of pumpkins on Highwood
Avenue in just four hours. The
rest, as they say, is history!
The Inaugural Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival in 2010
brought tens of thousands of
people together from all around
the Midwest and the world, to
break the Guinness World Records
for most jack-o-lanterns lit
at one time. Highwood’s official
count was 26,287l, just shy of
the record of 30,128 set in 2016
by Boston, MA.
In 2011, Mayor Charlie Pecaro
and Falberg were on a mission
and extended a friendly competition
invite to the mayor of
Keene, NH, who replied “we are
accepting your challenge with
open arms. The Pumpkin Festival
is an event built on commu-
Benefiting Make-A-Wish® Illinois
Community comes out in costume
to give the gift of wishes in memory of
Highwood’s own Superman Sam
Saturday, October 12 at 9 a.m.
Now in its 10th year, the Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival is excited to host
its 4th Annual Superhero 5K Run/Walk
sponsored by Midtown Athletic Club
and the U.S. Marines to raise money for
a cause very near and dear to the hearts
of Highwood’s residents, Make-A-Wish
Illinois.
In 2013, Highwood’s hometown hero
Samuel Asher Sommer, known to so
many as Superman Sam, died on December
14 of acute myeloid leukemia at the
age of 8 years old. To honor Superman
Sam, a Make-A-Wish recipient, event organizers
are encouraging all participants
year’s $140,000 donation
to Make-A-Wish Illinois
and raise enough funds to
grant more wishes to children
with critical illnesses
in Illinois.
“In the months after
Sam died, I looked back at
our Make-A-Wish trip to
Disney World often,” said
Sam’s mom Phyllis Sommer.
“Those memories are
a gift that will continue to
shine as a bright spot in
the sadness. To spend time
together, in a sweet and
happy place, was so much
more of a blessing than
we’d ever though possible,
and for that we are so very
grateful.”
In addition to Sam, the
race is also honoring the
more than 700 wish children
from communities
all across Illinois this year.
This annual race will bring
participants together in an
effort to raise awareness
and support for Make-A-
Wish Illinois.
Kicking off at 9 a.m. on
Saturday, October 12th,
registrants will run or walk
from Waukegan and Walker
Avenues, in front of The
Bent Fork Bakery, through
Downtown Highwood and
historic Fort Sheridan,
while passing the thousands
of carved jack-o’-
lanterns which will be lit
later that evening.
Participants are encouraged
to register online for
the race. It is $35 for the
run/walk. Online registration
closes at 7 a.m. on
October 12, 2018. https://
Midtown Athletic Club
invites all registered runners
take place on The Great
Highwood Pumpkin Fest
grounds at the Midtown
Athletic Club booth on
Thursday, October 10,
from 5-8 pm and Friday,
October 11, from 4-8 pm.
On-site registration and
packet pick up will begin
on race day at 7:30 a.m.
In addition to these fundraising
efforts, there will
be a $5/day admission
to The Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival with all
proceeds going to Make-
A-Wish Illinois. People
can also donate online to
support Make-A-Wish Illinios.
“As a grassroots organization,
community
members and fundraising
efforts are key in making
sure that we can reach
every eligible child with a
wish,” said Ashley White,
Gift Officer with Make-
A-Wish Illinois. “The
generous people who are
participating in The Great
Highwood Pumpkin Fest
and race on behalf of
Make-A-Wish can feel really
good about bringing
hope, strength and joy to
critically ill Illinois children.”
excitement but even before
the competition starts, we
have won just by the challenge.
If we can spread the
message and give other
communities the opportunity
to say ‘you matter,
your pumpkin counts,
come join us’ it doesn’t get
any better than that.”
This friendly challenge
resulted in an HGTV reality
show entitled “Pumpkin
Wars,” in which HGTV’s
“Property Brothers” star,
Jonathan Scott, came to
Highwood to film, participate
and report on the
great family-friendly festival,
while his brother,
Drew Scott, was in Keene,
at their Pumpkin Festival.
The Keene festival won
the contest with 29,381
jacko’-lanterns, and in
2013, Keene claimed the
Guinness Book of World
Records for 30,581 lit
jack-o’-lanterns. The big
aim to break a record has
waned due to a bigger
emphasis on community,
but the two cities remain
friendly in the spirit of participation
and pride.
There is still time
to volunteer!
The Original Pumpkin Fest
The original Pumpkin
Festival started in Keene,
NH in 1991, the brainchild
of communications
and public relations professional
Nancy Sporborg
who states, “The magic
of the Pumpkin Festival
is not about setting the
World Record, but it is that
record that enables us to
bring deeper meaning and
enthusiastic participation
to the event.”
Sporborg was so inspired
by pumpkin festivals
that she wrote a book
featuring a photographic
journey through 25 years
of the Pumpkin Festival
(PumpkinFestival.org),
with proceeds going to
fund pumpkin festivals!
The original Keene
Pumpkin Festival has been
the inspiration for other
pumpkin festivals in Highwood,
as well as Boston,
MA and Newtown, CT.
The Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival
The Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival has
evolved through the years
and has been a source of
much pride for the entire
region. Adding to the element
of good will and
strong community spirit,
Celebrate Highwood became
a 501(c)(3) non-profit
public charity in August
2016, and raises monies
for non-profit organizations
throughout the year
at its family friendly festivals
and events.
Come out to The 10th
Annual Great Highwood
Pumpkin Festival this
weekend and join your
neighbors, businesses,
schools, volunteers, organizations
and residents
who are knee-deep in
pumpkin guts and glory.
Carve a pumpkin, make it
personal by carving your
name, a special date, message
to a loved one, logo
or important symbol then
walk around and find the
perfect location for your
creation. You can even
bring your own pre-carved
pumpkin to place. Check
pumpkin creativity
all while contributing to a
great cause.
