Religious Practices Message

Melissa Immel & Mark Wolkow

A Midwinter Night's Dream

Baby, it's cold outside! It is why you have a reason to stay inside, brew a hot pot

of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, and Zoom in on Friday evenings for a cozy

Shabbat service. Add a little warmth to your room (and your heart) by lighting

the Shabbat candles, and enjoy the comfortable melodies during our service.

Not only that, take a few moments to look at the gallery view for familiar faces,

catch up on the private chat, or relax in the knowledge that you are among

friends.

Torah readings will be on January 1 and January 15, and we have a very special

Shabbat on January 29. The Baltimore area Reform congregations are putting

together a Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) Shabbat. The guest speaker will be

Rabbi Novak Winer, RJE, currently the Director of Clinical Education at the

Hebrew Union College's Rhea Hirsch School of Education in Los Angeles, CA.

Mark your calendars today! We will have a link on the Temple calendar to

access the service.

Thank you to the families who led the menorah candle lighting at the Temple

and for your creative activities! We thank the Walton, Needel, Immel, Wolkow,

Cogan, Folus, Baker, Mullis, Marksamers, ASTY, and the 7th-grade Kehillah

class families - Cocco/Braccille, Pollock, and Goldman. Great job!

Mark & Melissa

Fundraising News

Terry Weiner

It’s hard to believe that 2021 is upon us and what a year it has been. On the heels of the

auction, we will be doing two new fundraisers – the first one will be in late

January/early February, and we will be selling candy (kosher, of course) for Passover.

Our second fundraiser for 2021 will occur in early spring. To prepare for the beauty of

the season, we will be having a fundraiser selling flowers/plants/bulbs. Both events will

be done through the website for each vendor, which makes it easier to navigate. Look

for an upcoming email with details on how to purchase these items in mid to late

January.

We hope to have a flea market on the temple’s grounds as we look forward to the

warmer months. Also, we are looking to have food trucks sell their goodies to the

masses that attend. Details are to being worked out for this, and once again, keep your

eyes open when you get the monthly newsletter and our website.

It’s hard to raise money during these trying times – if you have an idea that you would

like to share, please email me at fundraising@templeadasshalom.org. And if you would

like to participate in any of these events, your help would be much appreciated.

Once again, I want to thank all of our vendors and congregants for their involvement

during the auction – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Terry Weiner

Happy New Year from the Office of Temple Adas Shalom

8 Days of Giving Gratitude

Courtney Washburn-Marcheski

I would like to take a moment to acknowledge all of the families that participated in the

Hanukkah 8 Days of Giving Campaign this year. We were blessed with a generous

donor that agreed to match up to $10,000 in donations which motivated us to set the

goal pretty high. Hanukkah is such a special time of the year and I am proud to say that

the Temple Adas Shalom families showed up and helped us to raise $10,177. This means

that we will receive the full match as promised so we wanted to thank all of you for

making that happen.

When I conceived this fundraiser last year, I had no idea that it would turn into the

beautiful event that it has become. The part of this campaign that I get true enjoyment

out of is the part where the Temple gives back to you. Your generosity inspires me to

make next year even more bountiful in incentives we will offer you.

Thank you for all you are and all you give!

Kehillah MAGNET Message

Joel Yoffee

Hello Temple Adas Shalom Community,

We hope everyone is continuing to stay safe at home! Due to current COVID viral

levels, safe virtual learning will continue into 2021 and for the foreseeable future.

Our virtual learning programs for all grade levels would not be a success without all

of you! Please continue to keep up the great work!

Kehillah MAGNET needs a new Religious school Principal for the next school

year, 2021/2022. Interested persons should contact me, Joel Yoffee,

at joelyoffee@gmail.com for additional information.

Kehillah MAGNET still has student availability at all grade levels! If you have a

child or know of a family with children interested in learning more about their

Jewish heritage, Kehillah MAGNET might be the learning environment for them.

We would love the opportunity to discuss our Jewish educational programs with

all those interested. Please contact our Principal, Jenn Bober, at

principal@templeadasshalom.org, for additional information.

As always, parents answering your questions and concerns about Temple Adas

Shalom's Kehillah MAGNET Religious School Program is very important to us, and

we would love the opportunity to talk directly with you. You always have a voice!

Many Thanks,

Joel Yoffee

Kehillah MAGNET Religious School Committee Chair

Gift Shop News

Pat Wolkow & Denise Gordon

We didn’t get our wish to have an online catalog for buying online, but we are getting

closer.

Our Purim and Passover inventory is getting put together now to be put up on the TAS

Sisterhood Gift Shop Facebook page. We will connect with those of you who use

Facebook to let you know when it is complete.

Our suggestion is to go to our Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TASSisterhoodGiftShop

Click PHOTOS, then > ALBUMS. We divided photos of our inventory into these album

categories. Once you click on an individual image in that album, you will see the Stock

Number, item name, and price.

Then contact Pat or Denise through the FB page, the Temple FB page, FB messenger,

text message, or by phone to either place an order or meet us at the shop!

How to Plant a Tree (for Tu b’Shevat) – by Janet Ruth Falon

Dig a wide hole, two or three times the width of the root ball.

Be optimistic. Assume it will take, and flourish. Things usually thrive if you give them enough

space and believe in their potential.

So do people.

Place the tree; turn it so the best side of the tree is facing the direction you want.

Make sure it gets enough sun. Assume it will absorb what it needs. Things usually grow if you

point them towards a source of nurture and if you show them how to receive it, and encourage

them along.

So do people.

Backfill the hole, lightly packing the soil as you go.

Don’t pack down the soil, hard, with the back of your shovel. Assume it needs to be loose so there

are openings for the new roots to explore. Things usually fill the space they’re given and will wilt,

even die, without enough.

So do people.

Stake the tree.

Drive the stake through the root ball into the ground underneath. Assume the tree wants to take

hold. Things want to stand up straight and will do so if, at the bottom, they’re secure.

So do people

Tip: Newley planted trees should only be pruned to remove broken, dead, or diseased limbs.

Otherwise, leave them until after their first growing season.

Clear out any deficiencies that you are certain will impede growth. Assume that what’s left is

sound and well intentioned. Things want to move towards wholeness; but they need to find out,

first, who they are.

So do people.

Adult Education News

Stephen Marksamer

Happy New Year 2021: May it be safe, healthy, and filled with new learning!

Getting that learning part going are 14 registered participants in the very

popular Hebrew in a Jiffy class. It already started, and surprising fun ensued. The

course will continue into March 2021. I’m sure we could talk Mark & Linda into doing

it again. If you are interested, send us a note.

On other class updates, the book discussion led by Rabbi Franken on The Book of Lost

Names will take place on Saturday, January 23rd at 10 am. Read the book – it’s

excellent. Then join in; it’s open to whoever wants to join us (link on our web page &

the temple calendar).

We have several goals for 2021, including developing two new classes, with a speaker

series concentrating on current events. Potentially a “Lunch & Learn” format. Let me

know what you would like to talk about, then let’s make it happen together!

The JNF is working on a new virtual tour with 25 slots open to our group. Since the

Israeli tour’s success last year, I’m looking forward to finding out more about this one.

The Adult Ed committee is also discussing new learning formats such as Day trips to

important sites such as museums & historic sites, hiking or nature walks, and even

classes to learn necessary skills for MS Office applications.

Remember, there are other educational, stimulating offerings as well. Check out our

web page for the latest https://harfordjewishcenter.org/jewisheducation/adulteducation.

There will be even more improvements to our web page in 2021. We hope to add a

registration process, payments/donations capability when appropriate, and standardize

a repeatable process for updates.

If you are interested in participating in or developing new classes or have ideas moving

towards greater congregational involvement, please don’t hesitate to contact your Adult

Ed committee at adulted@templeadasshalom.org.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Stay healthy and stay safe & Happy New Year 2021.

Sincerely,

Stephen Marksamer
