rooms at the city’s larger hotels to tranquil
team-building getaways, outdoor party
and wedding venues, as well as
theater-style settings for larger group
presentations.
Culture and recreation
Gig Harbor was recently voted one of the top
five small towns in America by Smithsonian
Magazine based on “the cultural events and
recreation activities available in a city with a
population less that 25,000.” The city’s
numerous parks and open spaces — and miles
of shoreline — make it the ideal destination
for recreation, water sports and boating. Gig
Harbor is the closest leisure and meeting
destination to Chambers Bay, which is across
the landmark Narrows bridge and 8.5 miles
from Gig Harbor. And if Chambers Bay isn’t
enough of an attraction, Gig Harbor is within a
30-minute drive or less to Gold Mountain,
Canterwood, McCormick Woods, Trophy Lake,
The Home Course and Madrona Links.
Canterwood and Madrona Links are in Gig
Harbor.
Good spirits and tasty ales
The landmark Tides Tavern and 7 Seas
Brewing plus Wet Coast Brewing are
among the favorite watering holes, while
Heritage Distilling is making its mark with
its signature whiskey, vodka and gin.
Location, location, location
Less than a 50-minute trip from Seattle —
and just over the Narrows bridge from
Tacoma — Gig Harbor is the gateway
to the natural beauty of the Kitsap and
Olympic peninsulas, while still close to the
big city activities and attractions of the
nearby metropolitan areas.
Owners John and Alyssa Ross outside of their restaurant, Millville Pizza Company.
New places to get
your grub on
By Danielle Jimenez
Since last year, Gig Harbor
has been busy. From food
trucks to pizza and Mediterranean
— there are new
places to get your grub on in
the harbor.
And at Millville Pizza Co., Gig Harbor’s
newest pizzeria, you’re sure to have never
tasted anything like their high-quality
wood-fired pizza.
“All of our ingredients are made from
scratch, including the pizza dough and
sauce,” said owner John Ross. “Not only the
food — and authenticity of the food sets us
apart — but also our historic building and
the historic Millville neighborhood we’re
located in.”
The pizzeria is small and seats 30, but
their focus is on high quality. That’s why
Ross, along with his wife and co-owner,
Alyssa, said they ordered an authentic
octagonal wood-fired pizza oven and fuel it
with applewood for some extra flavor.
“A lot of people who say their pizza is
wood-fired are actually using gas, but we’re
using actual wood,” John Ross said.
Their pizza is an airy thin crust, with
toppings extending to a half inch from the
edge. Millville’s red sauce is made with San
Marzano plum tomatoes. They also offer
their own pesto sauce and a ricotta-based
white sauce.
Patrons are sure to be
impressed with Millville’s
unique offering of cheeses
and meats. Cheeses include
goat, gruyere, grana padano,
ricotta and mozzarella. Meats
include spicy Italian sausage,
soppressata, Portuguese
chorizo, prosciutto and more.
Spices and toppings include
fresh thyme, oregano, rosemary,
raw garlic, arugula and
sautéed portabella, to name
a few.
Besides wood-fired pizza,
Millville serves such appetizers
as antipasto, fresh-made
rosemary crackers and a
wood-fired chocolate chip
cookie. There are several salads
and local beers on tap.
“It’s been awesome so far,
we’ve been very busy,” John
Ross said. “Everyone seems
to be really excited about the
product. Most say it’s one of
the best they’ve ever tasted.”
For now, Millville has limited
hours of dinner only, 4:30-
9:30 p.m. Tuesday through
Saturday. They are located
along the waterfront at 3409
Gertie and the Giant Octopus
is an intimate setting
that feels like a private-dining
experience. It offers dinner,
5-10 p.m. Tuesdays through
Saturdays, with influences
from the Mediterranean —
France, Italy and Spain.
Dishes include roasted
dates, polenta, chickpea fries
with olive dip, mista salad,
pappardelle pasta with peppercorn
cream sauce, and of
course, octopus. They have a
wine bar that includes nonalcoholic
wines.
“We represent buying local,”
DeLaura said. “We use
local butchers, small familyowned
wineries and buy local
ingredients of all kinds.”
We’re seeing a trend that
Gig Harbor is really accepting
us, and we’re excited for the
Looking for something
more casual? Visit one of the
first food trucks in Gig Harbor
for a unique food “trolley”
experience. JW @ the Boatyard
will redefine your idea of
what a food truck can offer.
They call it a food trolley
because that is what it is — a
revamped red trolley truck,
giving it an antique feel. The
trolley opened last summer to
local popularity.
At JW, owner Jason Winniford
said the experience
is the same as ordering off a
sit-down restaurant menu. He
says it is a gourmet menu of
mostly fish, including lobster
rolls, salmon chowder and

calamari. They serve brats,
pulled pork sandwiches,
grilled salmon, salads, ice
cream, a kid’s menu and
gluten-free items.
For seating, there is a large
covered area with a fireplace
to enjoy lunch in a cozy space.
The food trolley is near the
No doubt being one of the
JW @ the Boatyard has
inspired more to follow in
their trolley tracks. One such
example is the newly opened
Gnosh Food Truck.
Gnosh specializes in sandwiches
and boxed lunches.
“Cheesy does it” is their slogan,
which employees show
With a slogan such as that, it’s
no surprise that crispy, melted
A legendary
tavern
One of Gig Harbor’s
favorite waterfront
eateries, the Tides Tavern
was originally a general
store in 1910.
Current owner Peter
Stanley bought the
rundown tavern in 1973
and after a two-month
reconstruction project,
reopened it with a larger
kitchen.
The menu has expanded
to include pizzas, burgers,
sandwiches, chili, clam
chowder, homemade
soups and the tavern’s
famous fish and chips.
Traditions remain intact
with live music on featured
weekends, original signs by
local painter Toby Reid,
and the walls remain covered
with snapshots sent
in by patrons who have
donned their Tides shirts
around the globe.
The Tides Tavern is a
community gathering spot,
where old friends reunite
and new ones fall in love.
Its historic past is visible
ig Harbor’s tight-knit community, beautiful harbor and commitment to
local business create the perfect space for new business ideas to become
a reality. Because of this, new and improved shopping experiences are a
regular sight for visitors and residents.
Last year, several new and expanding businesses were opened in the
Chris Montrone, owner of
Montrone Furniture, is one of
those people. He took a family
tradition and turned it into
his passion and livelihood.
“I was learning woodworking
since I was a little kid,”
Montrone said. “I was in my
grandfather’s shop since I was
in diapers. My whole family
always had their own woodworking
shops.”
Although it was his true
passion, he never thought
about making custom furniture
as a potential business
until he moved to Gig Harbor
three years ago.
“It was my wife Emily’s
idea to start the business,”
Montrone said. “And opening
our own store last November
seemed that natural next
step, because we were already
selling furniture in about
seven local stores.”
Montrone uses a unique
business model that accommodates
most customers’
budgets. Customers tell him
what they want and their
budget, and Montrone makes
it happen. Customers can
bring in their own pieces of
wood for an extra-sentimental
piece.
“Not only do I use tools
passed down to me from my
grandfather, but also pieces
of wood passed down,” Montrone
said. “I’ve also had
people who’ve cut down trees
in their yard they’ve had since
they were children and they
want me to use that.”
store that can provide unforgettable
experiences?
The newly-expanded Gig
Harbor Fly Shop has been a
well-established store in Gig
Harbor since 2009. It not only
meets needs for fly-fishing,
but water sports and water
hobbies. This includes sales,
classes and rentals of kayaks,
standup paddleboards, fishing
gear, guided fishing tours
and so much more.
After a busy summer, the
shop expanded and opened
Gig Harbor Watersports in
November to house its watersport
rentals so the fly shop
could focus on fly-fishing
again.
“It’s been great to have a
breather at the fly shop because
we were just slammed
last summer — we were at full
capacity,” said owner Blake
Merwin. “The expansion has
allowed us to not only expand
our rentals, but start some
new programs.”
Coming in June, the shop
will host daily harbor tours at
10 a.m. on kayaks or standup
paddleboards. The fly shop
hired two women to head
its new women’s fly-fishing
program, which will include
meetups, and local and interntional
trips, Merwin said.
“We want to develop a local
community for women in flyfishing,”
Merwin said.
Merwin said several events
are in the planning stages and
ig Harbor is one of the best
places around to get away
from busy city life and get
outdoors.
Only a short drive from
major cities such as Seattle
and Tacoma, while visiting
Gig Harbor it doesn’t take long to leave
behind the crowds and traffic and get out on
the water.
The harbor has everything you need for a
weekend water getaway or day trip. Local
shops offer everything from kayaking,
standup paddleboarding, fishing and
boating to guided tours and classes of
every kind.
A must visit when looking to get out
on the water is Gig Harbor Watersports,
which opened in November as an expansion
of the longtime Gig Harbor Fly Shop.
After one of its busiest summers ever
last year, owner Blake Merwin said it was
time to expand so the Fly Shop could focus
on fishing again.

The Kitsap Peninsula National
around 371 miles of spectacular
shoreline from Foul
Bainbridge Island on the east,
Gig Harbor and the Tacoma
Narrows bridge on the south,
and the waters of Hood Canal
on the west.
The trails travel around the
shorelines of three large land
masses: Kitsap Peninsula, Key
Peninsula and Bainbridge
Island, and are located primarily
in Kitsap County, as well as
Mason and Pierce
counties.
Currently,
13 separate
trails, designed
as a
continuous,
seamless
regional experience,
make
up the network. Each
trail can be experienced as a
day trip. Trail amenities include
access sites, boat launches,
and camping areas. Water trails
can also serve as venues that
create educational experiences.
“We’re not a chain store.
Our focus is customer service
and having all the products
people need right here in
They are a full-service
kayaking and paddleboarding
equipment. In the development’s
center, it has a
demonstration pond where
people can try out the kayaks.
“People should come out
because Gig Harbor is beautiful,”
Busse said. “We have
hundreds of models in stock
and can fit anyone of any
size. We also offer a boating
All of its employees are
boaters and have personal
knowledge of the equipment.
They can offer advice
for those looking to bring
The store planned to offer
free evening paddling classes
on Friday nights this spring
for kayakers looking to increase
their skill levels.
“It’s a play and learn session,”
Busse said. “People can
bring their kayaks, and if they
need any new skills or improvement
we can help them
with that.”
Busse said they have fishing
kayaks and will have demonstrations
and guided trips
this summer.

Ship to Shore can really
Gondolier John Synco has
years and did some training
in Venice.
His gondola is 100 percent
authentic and is one of 26
boats of its kind in the United
States, according to Synco. He
has the only Venetian gondola
operation in the Pacific
Northwest.
Synco’s basic cruise is an
Passengers are welcome
to bring their own food
But that’s not all. He can
He advises riders to get as
Park are just a few of the exciting
ways people will better
be able to get out and about
as they walk the harbor.
Events at Skansie
Skansie Brothers Park will
have a fully remodeled building
with a welcome plaza,
expanded restrooms and
facilities for visiting boaters.
There will be a harbor viewing
platform on the second
floor.
“Sidewalks will also be widened,
which is great because
thousands walk the route
every day,” said Karen Scott,
Gig Harbor tourism and communications
director.
Scott said it won’t be long
before visitors will be able to
enjoy the updates.
“We will have a ribbon
cutting June 1 at the first
Farmers Market and grand
unveiling of the park,” Scott
said. “We are on schedule and
excited for this amazing opportunity.”
After June 1, events such as
the Waterfront Farmers Market,
Summer Sounds at Skansie
and Movies in the Park
will be even more enjoyable
for visitors.
The Waterfront Farmers
Market is every Thursday
through Aug. 31, 3 p.m. to 7
p.m. You will find a variety of
local vegetables, fruit, honey,
flower arrangements and
baked goods. And while you
shop, enjoy the entertainment,
chef demonstrations
and more.
“We are a food-centered
market, we want to bring
access to fresh foods, meats,
cheeses and fish,” said Heidi
Gerling, farmers market manager.
“Updates at the park will
make it even better as a gathering
place and create more
of a community feel.”
Gerling said the market has
been running for three years,
and they modeled it after
what locals said they wanted.
It is easily accessible by trolley,
car or boat.
“I like that it’s truly a place
the community can come
together and support local
farmers and producers and
walk away with a real fresh
“It is a very popular event,”
Scott said.
On Friday, local restaurants
have special dinners
planned. Those interested
can make reservations with
participating restaurants.
For art lovers
For a more family-friendly
event, you can’t miss Chalk
the Harbor.
“It’s one of the longestrunning
events in the
harbor — popular with artists,
families and children,”
Scott said. “Organizations
pick an area of town to
spend the day doing graffiti.
We make graffiti okay
for the day.”
Chalk the Harbor is July
15, the same day as the
Gig Harbor Art Festival,
and any local business or
organization can host a
sidewalk square in town.
The chalk art will be
judged by category (kids,
family, high school, college,
adult, maritime nautical art
and group).
“I’m always amazed at the
creations we find,” Scott
said. “Artists even travel to
participate.”
Walking tours
Another Downtown Waterfront
Alliance activity — in
partnership with Harbor
WildWatch and the Harbor
History Museum — is the
free, guided waterfront walking
tour, which continues to
see growth and interest from
residents and visitors.
“It’s picked up with more
visitors, and we are very
pleased — our attendance
went up 25 percent,” said Josh
Sherwin, special projects coordinator
for the Downtown
Waterfront Alliance. “And 50
percent who take the tours are
visitors from out of town.”
During the free, two-hour,
1.3-mile-long tour, two
guides lead visitors to 10
historically-significant locations
along the waterfront.
The 12 guides who rotate
leading tours are interactive,
fun and entertaining, Sherwin
said. They are not historians,
but are history enthusiasts,
and each has something
unique to add.
“People will have a great
time enjoying a nice stroll
on the waterfront, that is fun
and informative at the same
time,” Sherwin said. “They
will learn about the history of
harbor and even hear some
tall tales.”
Saturday tours start at 9
a.m. at the Maritime Pier,
3003 Harborview Drive, June
10 through Aug. 26. There is
Want to walk, bike or
There is no better
place than the Cushman
“It’s an amazing amenity
for recreation for walkers and
runs,” Scott said. “It
connects all areas of town.”
At nearly 6.2 miles from
Borgen Boulevard to the
plenty to see on the trail. You
can connect to the Narrows
bridge and continue to the
into Tacoma if your heart
desires.
“I don’t know if many
people know that it extends
that far and connects to the
huge, huge amenity in addition
to the waterfront. The
two are phenomenal, especially
More than
just a race
Courtesy
By Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation
very September since 2011, thousands
of Gig Harbor’s neighbors have welcomed
more than 1,500 runners for
a half marathon and 5K. Every step
is dedicated to the men and women
whose service to our country left them
vulnerable. Race for a Soldier is, how- Eever, much more han just a race.
On March 7, 2009, the world forever changed for one
Gig Harbor mother.
Working at the iconic Tides Tavern, the manager got a
call to send Leslie Mayne home. Her son Pfc. Kyle M. Farr,
an Iraq veteran, had died of an overdose after being discharged
from a Maryland Veterans Affairs Hospital.
The journey of grief and loss is a very personal one.
Leslie credits her Tides co-workers, friends, family and
church with giving her the
grace, compassion and support
for healing, encouragement
and hope for brighter
days. She gratefully recalls
the haven of Best Western
Wesley Inn that allowed her
to process and pray, mend
her broken heart and transform
her pain into a mission:
Every soldier has a safe place
to land and a retreat providing
innovative care for their
post-traumatic growth.
She found her compassionate
allies in this community.
In 2011, the Permission To
Start Dreaming Foundation
was launched. In addition
to Race for a Soldier, other
events have emerged, including
Swing for a Soldier golf
tournament, Pull for a Soldier
competitive trap shoot, and
two days before the race.
Robert Vera, best-selling
author of “A Warrior’s Faith,”
a recipient of the 2016 Illumination
Book Silver Medal
award, describes Gig Harbor
and the good work that it is
doing on behalf of our veteran
community:
“At the wharf, there is a
beautifully imposing bronze
statue of a fisherman. The
fisherman’s sleeves are rolled
up, his forearms bulge as he
hauls in his net. Alone he
labors, a frozen metal figure
under the gaze of an American
flag flying above him.
Fishermen, their hard work,
built this community. The
statue commemorates Gig
the pedestal’s plaque.
The people of Gig Harbor
appreciate and honor hard
work and sacrifice. I witnessed
their unique form
of sacrifice and honor on a
misty September morning
when the people of Gig Harbor
gathered for the Race for
a Soldier prayer breakfast.
They came to honor their
warriors, to pray for them and
to support them. As we ate,
a Navy SEAL riveted us with
the story of his final mission.
Then a legless Marine spoke
and empowered us when
he said that he felt that he
still can give more. An Army
general presented an award
to one of Gig Harbor’s own for
his selfless work making new
arms and legs for wounded
service members across the
nation. I sat humbled and
gratefully listened to amazing
stories of hard work, sacrifice
and service.
If you want to know what
makes this nation great, visit
Gig Harbor in September,
go to the wharf (downtown)
and read the names on the
plaque, then attend the
prayer breakfast. Lastly, join
with the amazing people from
around the world who travel
to this location to honor our
warriors in an inspirational
ritual known as ‘Race for a
Soldier.’ ”
Since its inception, the
and holistic programs
provide assistance in healing
from the effects of post-traumatic
The foundation is poised
with a seven-day retreat and
change in assisting veterans
with an effective model for
healing and hope. The military
suicide rate more than
doubled from 2004-2009, and
has remained constant at
24-25 per-100,000, roughly 20
percent to 25 percent higher
than a civilian population
of the same age and gender
makeup, according to a
2016 USA Today article. The
Kids play baseball at Sehmel Homestead Park. It has 98 acres with ponds, playgrounds and areas for events.
Sehmel family’s legacy
continues as park
By Danielle Jimenez
52 gigharborguide.com
ehmel Homestead Park is a
must-see in the Gig Harbor
area — ranked at No. 7 out of
32 things to do on Trip Advisor,
it’s a destination not to
miss.
The park is a beautiful,
S98 acres with ponds, playgrounds and areas
for football, soccer, baseball, basketball and
countless events. It is rich with history, dating
to 1886.
The Sehmel family homesteaded the land
for more than 110 years, after acquiring it for
free because of the Homestead Act of 1862.
The act was signed by President Abraham
Lincoln to encourage independent farmers
rather than wealthy plantation and
slave owners. Under the act, any pioneers
in the West who farmed land for five
years could then own the land.
W.L.C. Henry Sehmel was invited to the
Puget Sound by his brother Charles. In
1891, after working five years diligently
farming, they received the deed to the
property that is now Sehmel Homestead
Park.
The Sehmel homestead grew with
marriages and children. Not only did the
Sehmels farm their own land, they developed
country roads and served their

Joshua Bessex/Peninsula Gateway
community as members of
the local school board and as
local midwives.
Pierce County Parks and
Recreation purchased the
land in 2002 from Henry Sehmel’s
decedents, who helped
develop the land into a recreational
area.
In 2010, attendees at the
park unveiling were invited to
help cut the lengthy ribbon
stretching between two fields.
“I absolutely love the park,”
said Sarah Till, who has lived
in Gig Harbor for 14 years.
“I’ve been taking my son
since it opened when he was
three. He’s played flag football
there; we go to the Easter
egg hunt every year. I’ve even
heard it’s a cosplay hotspot
for people who dress up as
fairies — I’m always looking
to see one.”
Today, 76 acres of the park
are devoted to natural areas
including ponds, wetlands,
meadows and conservancy
forest area. The land is a community
hotspot with 22 acres
for recreation.
For sports, the park houses
a 375-foot baseball field, two
300-foot combination baseball
and softball fields, a soccer
field with artificial turf,
a basketball court and two
tennis courts.
Ahead of most public parks
today, Sehmel Park’s playground
includes access for
children of all abilities. There
are ramps for wheelchairs
and adaptive swings.
The park includes a picnic
shelter and picnic areas, concessions,
and heritage and
master gardener demonstration
areas as well as a native
plant garden.
There is an outdoor performing
arts amphitheater
and a 4,500-square-foot
indoor pavilion with meeting
rooms perfect for event rental
— including weddings.
“The amphitheater hosts
local children’s theater plays,”
Till said. “We also love the
Scarecrow Festival in September.
We go every year.”
For hiking, walking or running,
there are four miles of
trails. Dogs on a leash are
welcome. Most areas at the
park are available for rent.
Sehmel Homestead Park
is open daily from 7 a.m. to
dusk at 10123 78th Ave. NW,
A historic netshed built by the
Historic
netsheds
File
As early as 1910, Gig
Harbor’s first netsheds
began appearing along
the waterfront. These
simple structures, many
constructed with rough,
hand-hewn fir, were used
by local fishermen to
store nets and fishing gear.
As the town grew, many
netsheds were displaced
by new development
and commercial marinas.
Today, only 17 netsheds
remain along the western
shoreline, but Gig Harbor
Bay still boasts the largest
inventory of historic netsheds
on the Puget Sound.
