Inventorying and collection of plant material existing in Sweden should be a priority
during the early stages of the programme. All such activities should be co-ordinated
by the Nordic Gene Bank and the Swedish Biodiversity Centre.
The mandate of the Nordic Gene Bank should be broadened to include also
ornamental plants, as well as aromatic and medical plants. Furthermore, the activities
within the other mandates of the Nordic Gene Bank should be strengthened. Open-air
museums and botanical gardens and others that grow material worth preserving,
should continue to conserve material that fulfils the criteria of the programme. In
addition, further material should be adopted into the programme as inventorying,
collection, characterizations and evaluations are carried out.
Material that presently is conserved in situ, and that fulfil the criteria of the
programme, should in the future be preserved within the framework of the national
programme. Furthermore, additional material should be adopted into the programme
as inventorying, collection, characterizations and evaluations are performed.
If the Nordic Gene Bank, in accordance with this proposal, is given resources for
strengthening its activities, it will be possible to speed up the characterization and
evaluation of the material.
