18 Lithanian No 2 2010 In Enlish Greetings from Australia It’s 1 p.m at Manly Beach in Sydney Australia, Johan Stenbacka, an exchange student at University of Technology Sydney, strolls on to the beach carrying flip-flops in one hand and a newly waxed surfboard in the other. His Prada shades reflect the burning sun. Johan is one month into his summer vacation as he sinks down in the sand. He starts talking about his first semester at UTS and his tan<strong>ned</strong> face shines up… He is a man of ambition, and education has always been close to his heart. “The first semester has overall been good, although the quality of the subjects vary more than at LiTH. The teaching methods are the same here as back home, but final marks are based on assignments, quizzes and labs to a higher degree.” Johan takes pride in his health and fitness. However, his once rock solid six-pack has adopted a more spherical shape. He rubs his belly with a sandy hand and says, “Well, let’s just say that I haven’t set a foot in the gym Text and Photo: Fredrik Hammarström, Johan Stenbacka since stepping off the plane” He explains that there are simply too many adventures to be had in Australia, and apparently surfing isn’t enough to make up for the ‘slight’ increase in beer intake. Johan mentions that Sydney is very multicultural and also expensive to live in, especially if you’re looking for reasonable standards. However, the nightlife is as varied as it is amazing with clubs that would make “Platå” look like a kinder garden. Johan suddenly stands up. The wind has tur<strong>ned</strong> off shore and the swell is perfect and breaks in smooth arches. While running into the water Johan turns his head and shouts, “If you’re thinking of studying abroad… don’t hesitate, just do it! Leave your comfort zone, meet new friends and have the time of your…” his voice is cut off as he dives beneath a crashing wave.
