Ultrasonography in head and neck swellings.
R Chandak et al. Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (2011) 40, 213–221
• The use of real-time ultrasonography with highfrequency
transducers can significantly improve the evaluation of patients
with various types of head and neck swellings.
• Ultrasonographic examinations, which have relatively high
sensitivity and specificity, should be used to supplement clinical
examination in patients with head and neck swellings…
• From the present study and in accordance with.. …it can be
summarised that after clinical examination, ultrasound should be
the first modality used for the investigation as it is:
1. readily available
2. does not involve ionizing radiation
3. after which CT andMRI can be used to determine the extent of
the mass and to better define tissue characteristics.
