Sweden’s communications authority, the National Post and Telecoms
Agency (PTS), will be holding an international conference entitled
“Resilient Electronic Communications – A Multistakeholder Challenge”
on 5 November after Internetdagarna. This conference is part of
Sweden’s EU presidency.
Network security
in focus at the PTS
EU conference
as t h e eu presidency country of the second
half of 2009, Sweden will deal with
two proposals from the EU Commission
concerning the security and resilience of
electronic communications. The first proposal
concerns a review of the regulatory
framework for electronic communications.
The second proposal concerns how the EU
is to address matters concerning critical information
infrastructure protection. Both
of these proposals will be discussed at the
conference in Folkets Hus in Stockholm on
5 November.
“Very timely”
In addition to these proposals, there are
ongoing discussions in Europe concerning
how industry and government can work
together to meet the security challenges in
the electronic communications sector. Sitic
(Sweden’s IT incident centre) at PTS is one
of over 10 government Computer Emergency
Response Teams (CERTs) in Europe.
A couple of additional countries in Europe
are currently considering setting up such
teams.
“It’s these three areas, which are interlinked,
that the conference will be looking
at. It is therefore very timely,” says Marianne
Treschow, Director-General of PTS.
The conference is divided into three
tracks: Regulatory Policy, Public-Private
Partnerships and Government CERT Policy.
In connection with each track, PTS will be
holding three seminars followed by discussion
time. During these, the conference will
treat among other things the current status
of the EU commission’s proposals and present
best practice in the area of publicprivate
partnerships in the form of crisis
management organization and national
exercises. In addition, experiences from
how different CERTs are collaborating with
operators and the police will be discussed.
International speakers
The majority of the speakers at the conference
will be from abroad (primarily European
speakers). Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure
Åsa Torstensson, the European
Commissioner for Information Society and
Media, and the Executive Director of the European
Network and Information Security
Agency (ENISA) have been invited to hold
the opening speeches. The moderators for the
three tracks will be the network security
chiefs of the telecommunications authorities
in Finland, Denmark and Norway.
“The conference will provide an excellent
forum for discussing how we can create a
robust and secure information society. It is
our hope that participants will be able to
take with them many good initiatives that
they can apply at home,” says Marianne
Treschow.

conference. These presentations will deal
with how work on European policy in the
area of network and information security
is conducted. They will also provide an introduction
to the three tracks of the conference.
Participants at the Internetdagarna conference
are welcome to take part in this
conference at cost price. All other participation
will be by invitation only.
Högintressanta internationella workshops
Alla som bryr sig om DNSSEC-drift, framtidens Internet
och/eller infrastrukturens tillstånd och säkerhet ska se
till att delta i diskussionerna den 5 november.

vare .SE:s försprång på området lockades
150 av världens främsta DNS-experter dit
för att ta del av de praktiska erfarenheterna
i Sverige.
Inspirerade av framgångarna den gången,
anordnar .SE i år en heldag med tre internationella
workshops inom ramen för Internetdagarna.
De sammanfaller med PTS
EU-konferens om nätsäkerhet och det går
att röra sig fritt mellan de två evenemangens
programpunkter.
– Våra workshops är tänkta som lite mer
av diskuterande, problemlösande arbetsmöten
än de två första dagarnas seminarier.
Gemensamt för dem alla är att de berör
vidareutvecklingen av Internets fundamentala
delar, säger Staffan Hagnell, forskningsoch
utvecklingschef på .SE.
Tre aktuella teman
En workshop fokuserar på de verktyg som
nu finns tillgängliga för DNSSEC-administration.
– Mycket har hänt kring DNSSEC sedan
i fjol. Ämnet är nu högaktuellt för alla som
driver namnservrar, så det här blir lite vältajmad
konsumentinformation, fortsätter
Staffan Hagnell.
En annan workshop handlar om den affärsmässigt
intressanta utvecklingen av
teknik som möjliggör vad man kallar ”Sakernas
Internet”.
– Denna workshop målar upp visionerna
kring en tredje tillväxtvåg på Internet efter
uppkopplingen av våra datorer och mobiltelefoner.
När det går att koppla upp alla
möjliga saker kan intressanta affärstillämpningar
skapas nästan oavsett bransch, förutsatt
att adressrymden på nätet kan växa
med hjälp av IPv6.
En tredje workshop försöker svara på hur
man ska mäta hälsotillståndet för Internetinfrastrukturen,
vilken blivit kritisk för
dagens samhälle.
– Det borde redan finnas en standard för
detta. Vi vill etablera vilka mått som är relevanta
och hur de ska viktas för att ge en
rättvisande bild, avslutar Staffan Hagnell.
