Opportunities presented by
the “Internet of Things”
Now that the Internet has become a natural part of our
society, one might be tempted to believe that its development
is moving into a less frenetic phase. But in fact,
we’ve only just seen the beginning. If we look 10 years
into the future, we can expect that many things in the
physical world will be connected to the virtual world of
the Internet. We are already seeing examples of how
electricity meters, boat motors, sensors for monitoring
buildings, etc, are being connected to the Internet. The
step from a network for connected PCs and mobile
phones to becoming an Internet of Things might just
turn out to be the most revolutionary phase in the development
of the Internet.
In virtually every industry we can expect that new
creative solutions will blossom, for example, for monitoring
our homes and possessions, on-line monitoring
of servicing needs for vehicles, for increasing the efficiency
of goods and materials handling, e-health, etc.
Objective of the workshop
The objective of this workshop is to clarify the stateof-the-art
for the technologies and business opportunities,
and how the deployment of the Internet of
Things might be facilitated.
DNSSEC Tools and
Experiences
DNSSEC or Domain Name System Security Extension
is an extension of DNS that makes it possible to
validate the origin of the DNS data and to enforce
DNS data integrity. The need for DNSSEC became
obvious in the summer of 2008 when Dan Kaminsky
demonstrated a new type of attack on DNS. He showed
how a hacker with very simple means could inject
false DNS information into a vulnerable resolver.
DNSSEC is now being widely deployed by TLDs and
Domain Name Server Operators around the world,
where both .ORG and .GOV have been signed. Hopefully
we will also have a signed root by the end of 2009,
which will be a significant improvement for everybody
who wants to deploy DNSSEC.
Objective of the workshop
The primary objective of this workshop is to help DNS
Name Server Operators find suitable tools.
A Common Health
Check for the Internet
The Internet’s robustness or resilience is of great
importance to the whole community and is an issue
that is being discussed frequently today. In spite of
this, there is no generally accepted method for how
we ought to measure and monitor the quality of the
Internet.
Even if the Internet is complex, it is entirely possible
to get a picture of how the Internet is doing by taking,
compiling and analyzing relevant measurements.
These measurements should be measuring both quality
at the IP level, and the technical quality of the
services provided by corporations, government authorities
and organizations connected to the
Internet.
Objective of the workshop
The overall objective is to establish generally
accepted methods of measuring and presenting
the state of health of the Internet. This workshop
will contribute to this by discussing suitable
tools, methods and forms of cooperation.
