III. ABSTRACT
It has been determined qualitatively and quantitatively that natural
turpentine obtained from the resin of Turkish Red Pine that has a very large
extension in Turkey and sulphate turpentine that is a by product of pulp industry
and terpenic compounds existing in the volatile oils acquired from needles of this
tree by using water distillation and solvent extraction methods by utilising Gas
Chromatography and Mass spectrometry (GC-MS) methods in the study.
Besides, the enantiomers of α-pinen that has the largest amount of
turpentine composition determined by using chiral column. Starting from these
enantiomers various synthesis have been tried to get new compounds such as cis-,
trans- verbenol and verbenone showing pheromone effect against bark beetles that
harmful for conifers. Reduction of verbenone to verbenol following allilic
oxidation determined as the most suitable among the tried methods for the process
Key Words: turpentine, Turkish Red Pine, Pinus brutia, α-pinene,
verbenol, verbenone
