vABSTRACTDESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF TABLETOP TESTING MACHINE FORMECHANICAL TESTING OF LOW-STRENGTH MATERIALSTension/compression test is one of the most common testing methods whichis used to determine the mechanical properties of metallic and non-metallicmaterials. Brand-name testing machines which are available in the market such asInstron and MTS are sold for a price starting from 50,000 USD depending on theircapacities and specifications. In this study, a tabletop testing machine was designedwith enough capacity and specifications for tension/compression/bending tests oflow-strength materials at much lower cost compared to the brand-name machines(approximately one fifth). The frame of the testing machine was manufactured usingsome of the conventional machining methods. A steel material block at sufficientdimensions for machining was purchased and machined to the final dimensions usinga milling machine and some other tools such as cutting and measuring tools. After machining the frame, a hydraulic/pneumatic system was designed toobtain the required load and to have a range of loading rate that can be adjusted fortension/compression/bending tests. The required parts for the hydraulic/pneumaticsystem were purchased and installed on the frame. Then, the whole testing systemwas tested to check if anything needs to be corrected and made sure that it is readyfor further testing of low-strength materials. The custom-made tabletop testing machine provides 10 kN load maximumfor tension/compression/bending tests of low-strength materials and allows the userto adjust the loading rate.Since the tabletop testing machine will be used in biomechanics laboratory, the testing machine was tested both for tension and compression using samplesprepared from bovine bone. So, the testing machine was controlled whether it worksas desired or not. The problems that were faced during its operation were studied tofind the reasons and their solutions, then, they were corrected with minormodifications on the testing system. The results of bovine bone testing werecompared to the mechanical properties reported previously in the literature.
