Legendary Hotel
Celebrates 100 Years
The iconic Hotel Astoria lived up
to its lavish reputation by celebrating
its centennial on Tuesday with a grand party of
nearly 500 guests, hosted by Sir Rocco Forte,
co-owner, chairman and managing director of
The Rocco Forte Collection. Designed by Fyodor
Lidval and regarded as an architectural gem, the
Astoria has always belonged to the cohort of the
most prestigious and expensive. Today, the Astoria
is the only hotel in Russia that is part of
a collection of luxury hotels founded by British
hotelier Sir Rocco Forte. Almost $20 million
was spent on renovations when Forte took over
the management in 1997, which was completed
under the direction of Olga Polizzi, Director of
Design Rocco Forte Hotels and Forte’s sister. For
its 100th anniversary, the hotel upgraded both
its suites as well as unveiling a 3,500 square foot
Tsar Suite which includes a large bedroom with a
double walk-in wardrobe, a marble bathroom with
a double shower, a lounge overlooking St Isaac’s
Square, a gym with a dedicated treatment area,
a library stocked with over 300 Russian classics,
a fully-equipped kitchen and bar area as well as
a dining room that can seat up to 16 guests. At
Tuesday’s birthday event, guests included artistic
power couple composer Rodion Shchedrin and
legendary ballet dancer Maya Plisetskaya.
New Swiss Air Service
ST. PETERSBURG (SPT) – Swiss airlines will
launch its first flight from St. Petersburg to Geneva
on July 25, representatives of the airline said
at a news conference on Wednesday. Throughout
the summer, flights are scheduled for Mondays
and Thursdays. As of Sept. 7 the schedule will be
expanded to include Saturday flights. The three
new weekly flights will bring the number of Swiss
flights from St. Petersburg to Switzerland up to
10, including seven weekly flight by the company
to Zurich. Patrick Heymann, head of the
Swiss office in Russia and the Ukraine, said the
decision to launch the new flights was based on
an increase of passenger traffic to Switzerland,
which has become a popular ski destination for
St. Petersburg residents. Last year, passenger
numbers increased by 10 percent, Heymann said.
“In fact, Geneva is located so conveniently that
one or two hours of travelling by train can take
you to many ski resorts, and not only in Switzerland,”
Heymann said, adding that Switzerland is
also popular among Russian travelers in summer.
The price for return tickets in economy class are
expected to cost just under 300 euros with the
possibility of lower prices outside of peak seasons.
New Anti-Proliferation Deal
MOSCOW — Russia and the United States
have signed a bilateral agreement for protecting,
controlling, and accounting for nuclear materials,
continuing important aspects of a now-defunct
program that was seen as a cornerstone of post-
Soviet cooperation between the former foes.
President Barack Obama hailed the deal as an
example of “the kind of constructive, cooperative
relationship that moves us out of a Cold War
mindset” after a private meeting with President
Vladimir Putin at the G8 summit in Northern
Ireland late Monday. The new framework will replace
what is known as the Nunn-Lugar Program,
launched in 1992, under which the U.S. Defense
Department helped pay for securing and dismantling
weapons of mass destruction in the former
Soviet Union to prevent them from falling into
the wrong hands. “It was a very successful project.
One of very few successful projects of the last
20 years,” said Alexei Arbatov, an arms control
expert at the Moscow Carnegie Center. The new
agreement “means that this mentality of post-
Cold War cooperation is still alive, although some
indications may suggest that it isn’t,” he said.
Saudi tycoon may build world’s
tallest building in Moscow
Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal
may build a mile-high skyscraper in Moscow,
which would be the world’s tallest building by
far, Russian Vesti FM radio reported, quoting UAE
media. The prince is also considering Shanghai,
London and New York as possible locations for
the 1600-meter (5,280 feet) skyscraper but the
countries interested in hosting the world’s tallest
tower would need to offer attractive financing
terms, tax breaks and other government support,
Alwaleed said, Arabian Business magazine
reported. Alwaleed did not specify how the project
would be financed or when it might be completed,
adding the cost had yet to be worked out.
