AN OLD TIME CLASSIC FILM
The “Dead Poets Society is an inspiring
and compelling film which is set at
the Helton Academy for boys in 1959.
It focuses in on a small group of boys
and their literature professor.
“Carpe diem” which is Latin for
“seize the day” is what Mr. Keating (played by Robin Williams) encourages
the boys to do. Many of them attend the lessons against their will
and they experience a big surprise when they come across their new
teacher. He is the one who teaches them to “suck the marrow out of
life” and do what makes them happy. It is clear that he is not an average
teacher but someone who wants to encourage his students to follow
their dreams, not their parents .
After a few lessons with Mr. Keating the boys form the Dead Poets
Society. In the middle of the night, they sneak out into the woods and
read poems. Through this, some of them are able to build up their selfesteem.
One of the boys, Neil (played by Robert Sean Leonard) finally
dares to ignore his strict father and participate in a theatrical play. But
will he overcome his fears and follow his dream of becoming an actor?
And most importantly, will the Academy, where discipline is the most
important goal, tolerate the secret organization or even Mr. Keating’s
teaching methods?
The film is truly one the most moving
films of the 20 th century. The acting is superb;
in fact, Robin Williams received an
Academy Award for this role. Moreover,
the viewer can relate to one or more of
the characters and it is suitable especially
for teenagers because it will inspire them
to follow their dreams and make life extraordinary.
