Despite the uneasy situation, the museum was able toend <strong>2010</strong> in the black and I am confident that the museum willalso be able to end 2011 without a loss. However, I must admitthat the task ahead won’t be easy and this especially applies tothe necessity to make additional cutbacks in staffing – whichwill clearly be painful!In conclusion, I would once again like to thank all of ourcolleagues at the National Museum for their outstanding efforts,which helped make <strong>2010</strong> a successful year for the museum.I would also like to thank all of the museum’s patrons andsponsors for their continuing support. Our many visitors alsodeserve our thanks. I hope they will find our new exhibitionsand the presentation of our collections of continuing interestin 2011 and that they will continue to come and see what wehave to offer.2.Natural HistoryMuseumThe main tasks of the Natural History Museum were to continueto move its collections from the historical building that hadbeen its home in the National Museum, to finish equippingdepositories in Horní Počernice, as well as the preparationand partial reali<strong>za</strong>tion of the project to improve microclimaticconditions. The museum also provided support for scientificresearch in the field of natural sciences and continues towork on the expansion of technical equipment related to theproject – Science Park Barrande I. The exhibition “The Story ofPlanet Earth” ran at the National Museum until August <strong>2010</strong>,which included a special accompanying education program.Other ongoing work by the museum and its staff includedthe preparation of new exhibits and planning work on newinstallations.3.National HistoricalMuseumThe main exhibition project of the National Historical Museumin <strong>2010</strong> was “The Golden? Sixties – Memories and Reality” atthe National Monument in Vítkov. Other projects included“The Honours of Václav Havel, A Tribute to Democracy”, ”TheLast Silver Treasures of Bohemia”, “The Oldest Silver Treasures”and, in cooperation with the Moravian Provincial Museum, anexhibition entitled, “Treasures of Moravia”. The Kinsky SummerPalace was the setting for a special exhibition, “Modern CzechLegends – Folklore of the Atomic Age”. The Lapidary of theNational Museum was the setting for the exhibition “TheRoyal Marriage of 1310 and the Expansion of the House ofLuxembourg in the 14th and 15th Centuries”. Exhibitions heldabroad included “Folk Art of West Bohemia”, which was heldin the German town of Neukirchen, and “Our Katka’s Toys”and “Prague Castle Photographic Archives, 1918–1933” whichwere held at the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava.As well as the relocation of collections from the old historicalbuilding that had long been the home of the museum, thecollection department was also involved in scientific researchand cataloged a significant number of new additions to itscollections (received through both donation and purchases).Thousands of items were restored and cataloged over thecourse of the year. In the area of science and research, workcontinued on the major project, “Leading Figures in CzechScience and Culture”, which was sponsored by the Ministry ofCulture. Projects that were completed during the year included“The Documentary Films of Dr. Jiří Baum” and “The Acropolisof the Hill Fort in Libice“. The staff of the history museumwas also responsible for the publication of a large number ofscientific and other articles aimed at popularizing the workthey do. This included a number of exhibition catalogues. Staffalso gave a number of lectures at scientific conferences andcontinued to work on joint research projects both with otherCzech institutions and a number of international institutions.They also taught at a number of universities.
