English Summary < 119 >11.Science and ResearchThe year <strong>2010</strong> was the last but one within the period ofduration of two key research projects of the National Museum,one of which is titled The Scientific Evaluation and Broadeningof Natural History Collections of the National Museum, and theother Personalities of Czech Science, Humanities and Culture.Corpus and Evaluation of Sources and Evidence from theCollections of the National Museum. With respect to the timeschedule the works were mainly focused on the formulation ofaccomplished results and their presentation to both scholarlyand general public. Next to the two major projects, membersof the National Museum’s staff were involved in other researchprograms funded by the Ministry of Culture of the CzechRepublic, the Czech Science Foundation and the Grant Agencyof the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic; successfulcontinuations were experienced within several Europeanconsortia and European bilateral programs (all projects arelisted individually in the section VII).Monographs and studies produced within these projects arelisted in the complete bibliography on the museum’s webpage,while the monographs are named in the section XI of thepresent report.In <strong>2010</strong>, nine two-year projects funded by means of themuseum’s internal grants were concluded and successfullydefended. A new round of the internal grant competitionfor the period of 2011–2012 aimed at providing researchopportunities for young and talented scientists and resultedinto the support of 10 such proposals.In October to November 2009, the National Museum initiatedthe works of its archaeological expedition at Wad Ben Naga,Republic of the Sudan. The first season brought highlyinteresting results and opened up promising opportunities.The continuation of the expedition’s activities in November toDecember <strong>2010</strong> is described in the section VII.2.Přeložila PhDr. Jana Součková, DrSc.12.Presentation ActivitiesThe National Museum is a research organi<strong>za</strong>tion that conductsbasic research, applied research and experimental developmentand disseminates its results through, expositions, exhibitions,tuition and other types of pedagogic activity, together withpublication in all fields of its activity, including museology andthe conservation of collections.The museum presents collection items and relateddocumentation, as well as the knowledge it has gainedthrough the processing and scientific evaluation of these itemsthrough permanent expositions and short term exhibitionsboth at National Museum facilities and at other museums andinstitutions – including some outside the Czech Republic.Major exhibition projects in <strong>2010</strong> included: “Ancient BohemianLegends” (held in the historical National Museum building),“Beatlemania” (at the Czech Museum of Music), “Geisha andSamurai” (at the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African andAmerican Cultures), “Treasures of Moravia” (held in cooperationwith the Moravian Provincial Museum in the new NationalMuseum building), “Golden? Sixties – Memories and Reality”(at the National Monument in Vítkov) and, last but not least,the exhibition “Duke Wenceslas – Saint and Sovereign” (inthe historical National Museum building). All of the aboveexhibitions included extensive accompanying programs andsaw strong attendance and attracted a high degree of interest.13.AttendanceIn <strong>2010</strong>, National Museum facilities attracted a total of 597,603visitors, which is 24,681 more than in 2009. During MuseumNights <strong>2010</strong>, 61,807 people came to participating Praguemuseums.There were 365,164 visitors to the historical National Museumbuilding in <strong>2010</strong>.
