Editor’s noteThe conditions of living and development of children and youngpeople in Poland are the subject of constant care of the institutionof the Human Rights Defender. The result of thorough analytical andprogramming works was the Bulletin of the Human Rights Defenderentitled “Health of children and young people in Poland” published in2008 in cooperation with the Central Statistical Office. This uniquepublication not only provides up-to-date assessment of health of childrenand young people made using objective and subjective measures,taking into account main demographic and social and economic conditions,but it also documents the observance of the right of the younggeneration to health and harmonious development.On 25 June 2009, the lively debate at the scientific conference inthe Office of the Human Rights Defender concerned the important andurgent challenges faced by the social policy in our country due to thedevelopment of demographic processes.Part I of the Bulletin presents the introduction of the Human RightsDefender based on the Defender’s speech inaugurating the conference,as well as the articles of authors who presented the results of theirscientific inquiries. Chapter I includes the publications of the authorsfrom the Central Statistical Office and the Government PopulationCouncil on the role of demographic projections and the most recentassumptions of the population projection by 2035 concerning fertility,mortality, migration, changes in the population size and structure.Such a wide presentation of the projected development of populationprocesses allowed to determine the demographic prospects of Poland.Chapter II consists of the publication of the authors from the Universityof Warsaw, the Warsaw School of Economics, the Institute ofLabour and Social Studies, the Social Insurance Institution, the CentralStatistical Office and the Office of the Human Rights Defender. Thechallenges faced by educational policy, labour resources and socialsecurity policy, as well as by health care policy were presented in thecontext of demographic future of our country.
