Math (http://www.allkindsofminds.org/thinking-with-numbers-math-problem-solving-word-problems-and-higher-math).
Use the research and information to construct five effective word problems relating to an algebraic concept. Write two at
the elementary level, two at the middle school level, and one at the high school level. Your problems must make real-life
connections to the students learning. Additionally, consider the fact that, as the grade level increases, the difficulty of the
algebraic concepts do as well. Finally, focus on the fact that learning in math moves from the concrete to abstract.
After composing your word problems, choose one of them and discuss the following:
1. Why did you choose that algebraic concept? 2. What factors did you consider when writing the problem? 3.
How do you expect the students to solve problem (i.e., what method or procedure do you expect them to use)? 4.
What alternative methods might the students come up with to solve the problem? 5. What criteria will you consider
when grading the solution? Guided Response: Review and respond to two of your peers responses. Choose one of
their problems to solve. Show your steps and thought process for solving the problem. Evaluate the effectiveness of
their math problem based upon the readings and research relating to effective word problems. Offer one suggestion to
make the problem even more effective.
