Reflect: Historians often employ a theoretical framework in answering their research questions. This
framework is based upon the experience of the historian, the sources he/she has used and/or plan on
using, the research question he/she is interested in, and the state of the historical field. Reflect on
Chapter 8 of Tosh, the assigned chapter of Hopkins, your final project topic, and your study of history to
this point. Reflecting on your final project topic, what research questions would be asked by social
historians on this subject? What sources would they use? Does your understanding of history lend itself to
using a social historical approach? Why or why not?
Write: Social history developed as a form of analysis after the Second World War and has been incredibly
influential within the discipline of history, directly leading to the topics we will be looking at next week:
gender analysis and post-colonial theory.
In your post, reflect upon the development of social history.
o Reflecting upon the social climate at the time, postulate on why social history expanded in the
1950s and
1960s.
o What questions do social historians seek to answer?
o How did the writings of Karl Marx influence the development of social history?
o Is it possible to employ “non-Marxist” social history? Why or why not? Where does the chapter
from
Hopkins fit in?
o What are the potential strengths and weaknesses to this approach?
o How might your topic be examined by using a social historical approach?
Your initial post should be at least 250 to 300 words in length. Support your claims with examples
from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references in CMS
