Landscaping as a win-win strategy
The city is a holistic structure, and in order
for it to be perceived as an integrated
multiform environment, and not as a set of
separate developed areas, it is important to
work at all levels of privacy: from streets and
squares to public gardens and courtyards.
Each new site should, if possible, introduce
something new, and complement and improve
the environment. In my opinion, this is the
overarching objective in creating urban
landscapes, both for greenfield as well as
brownfield projects. Let me give you two
examples from our own practice.
Not so long ago we participated in the
tender for the renovation of one of the VDNKh
pavilions, the main task being to design new
facades for the existing structure. But when we
started on the project, we quickly realized that
it is impossible to limit ourselves to the facades
only — this would not do much good to either
the pavilion or to the surrounding exhibition
territory. In light of this, we on our own initiative
expanded the brief and proposed to rework the
podium part, providing it with a multifunctional
promenade with viewing platforms around its
perimeter and in doing so opened up picturesque
views of the pond and nature to passers-by,
views that previously were only accessible to just
the pavilion’s visitors. Such a comprehensive
approach was appreciated by the jury and got us
first place in the competition.
In designing the shopping and entertainment
complex on Polezhaevskaya, we paid special
attention to the expansion of the public area in
front of the entrance to the complex. Instead
of a transit promenade, we created a series of
semi-closed public spaces. Artificial hills, rows
of bushes and benches with elongated backs
shield visitors and passers-by from the noise
and dust of the busy highway, creating visual
and acoustic comfort and a sense of security.
The paving accentuates the main flows of people
and complements the navigation. I’m especially
proud of this project because we managed to
convince the developer that from this admittedly
localized improvement of the urban environment,
not only pedestrians and the city will benefit, but
business too. Today this complex is operating
with much success, confirming that our projects
were correct. True, clients are not always ready
to agree to additional costs that don’t bring
direct profits. And here the role of the architect
is particularly important — his intention to work
with a long-term view, patiently substantiating the
connection between a comfortable environment,
commercial benefit and the overall image of the
project, and slowly but surely convincing the
developer that if they invest in landscaping, then
at the end of the day it’s a win for everyone.
life, a park is always a highly important link in a
city’s green framework, a link which is capable
of compensating for even the most ecologically
destructive impacts. It is no accident that parks
are the most common solution for landfill sites;
in fact, this is almost the most humane way of
re-cultivating old waste-disposal sites. Such are,
for instance, Ariel Sharon Park in Israel (Latz +
Partner, 2008–present; see p. 102) and Freshkills
Park in Staten Island, New York (James Corner
Field Operations, 2006—present), where 900
hectares of landscaped green space are gradually
replacing what was once the largest waste tip in
the world. Beijing too has a park of this kind. In
2013 work started on creating Beijing Garden
Expo Park on the site of an old city waste tip
which was polluting the water catchment area.
To begin with, this was the venue for the Garden
Expo exhibition. Then, when the exhibition ended,
work began on a public park, where in an area
of 513 hectares gardens and multifunctional
green spaces are being created to designs by
different architects. But perhaps the best-known
example of a public space of this type is in Seoul.
The stunningly beautiful Cheonggyecheon Park
was created on the site of a gigantic tip for
hard household waste which had existed next
to a multilevel flyover over the course of many
decades. The flyover had been built along a river
which was first, in order to build the road, put into
pipes and then once again allowed to flow in the
open air. In 2005 a unique linear landscape park
was opened on the newly landscaped banks of
the river, returning to the centre of this enormous
megalopolis a natural oasis with luxuriant greenery
and ‘living’ water.
The Cheonggyecheon Park project (arch.
SeoAhn Total Landscape) may be considered
programmatic in all respects. This is an
outstanding example of both re-cultivation of a
landfill site and regeneration of the role of a river
in the structure of a city. The project is convincing
proof that a well-designed landscape can, and
should, be key to tackling the most acute urbanplanning,
ecological, and social and public
problems in a megalopolis. That this strategy is
today ubiquitous is eloquently shown by examples
from very different countries all over the world,
including Parc de la Presqu’île Rollet in Rouen,
France (Atelier Jacqueline Osty & associés, 2010–
present), which is being created on the site of an
old shipbuilding yard and has become a starting
point for realization of a more sweeping project for
revitalizing the banks of the Seine, and Bushwick
Inlet Park in Brooklyn (Kiss + Cathcart, 2013),
which has likewise been created on the site of a
large industrial shore zone. No less charismatic
and effective is RIO (West 8, 2011) in Madrid,
which has reanimated extensive wasteland
areas along the River Manzanares, where in the
1970s–1990s there was a section of the M30
Ring Road. As often happens, the road, built with
the intention of tackling traffic overload in the
Spanish capital, in the end brought it nothing
but problems: the heavy traffic was not merely
a constant source of air pollution and noise,
but also destroyed the coherence of the urban
space, eliminating links between districts which
are situated on opposite banks of the river. The
result was that over the course of slightly more
than 20 years the territory alongside the road
fell into decline and real estate dropped in value
and in many cases was simply abandoned by its
inhabitants. In 2005 the Madrid authorities held
SeoAhn Total Landscape)
Clearly, they make a very poor fit with the paradigm
of ecological and sustainable development, which
is why scenarios for green use in the literal sense
of the term are increasingly being developed for
such spaces. For instance, this winter in Toronto a
skating rink with a 220-metre-long speed-skating
track opened under one of the high roads — a
precursor of The Bentway, the coming linear park
which landscape architects Public Work will be
completing this summer in order to occupy all the
empty spaces around and between the concrete
piles on a site which stretches for almost two
kilometres. In projects like this the focus is on how
to ensure that plants get the amount of light they
need. Here we cannot not mention architect Dan
Barasch’s plans to create the first underground
park in New York — which, to contrast with the
now extremely popular High Line, he calls the
‘Low Line.’ This park is to be created in a longdisused
underground tram depot, with daylight
for the plants being supplied by a clever system
of light-catching mirrors and solar panels. The
latter system has already been tested at Low Line
Lab, where, over the year of its existence, 3,000
plants have been successfully grown and several
harvests of strawberries, mint, and other tasty
herbs have been gathered. The underground
park has an area of 4,650 square metres and will
need up to 100 mirrors to provide its vegetation
with light, but this does not put off the project’s
authors, who are intent upon “giving new life to
each and every dark cranny in New York.”
It would be a big mistake to think that in
the case of landscape architects concern for the
biodiversity of modern megalopolises goes no
further than flora. Fauna is paid no less —
or possibly more — attention. And this is hardly
surprising: flora and fauna are tied into a single
Low Line.
(Gitta
Instigator of meanings, experiences, emotions and social
responsibility: the Zaryadye environment that has appeared in the
center of the Russian capital is much more than just a park.
Zaryadye is Moscow’s newest park, built in the
historical center next to the city’s main symbols —
the Kremlin and Red Square. Among the many
meanings of Zaryadye, which has been the talk
of the town ever since the park’s opening on
September 9, 2017, first and foremost three
key points should be highlighted. First, it is the
pinnacle of the all-out renovation works of public
spaces which has caught hold of the capital
in recent years. For the first time in 50 years,
a new park has been built in Moscow and not
just anywhere, but within a stone’s throw from
the Kremlin walls. The country’s main city is
declaring values of a comfortable and welcoming
environment, and now this message is coming
straight from its “green heart,” which has begun
to beat next to the official “red” one. Secondly,
this is probably the most humane solution for
Zaryadye, a historical quarter with a complicated
past. After the demolition in 2004 of the giant
Hotel Rossiya complex (officially recognized as
the largest hotel in the world at that time), the
“golden” patch of land between Varvarka Street,
Kitaygorodskiy Passage and Moskvoretskaya
Street could have been built up with superprofitable
real estate. But in the end the decision
was made to give the densely built-up center
some much needed relief — a public recreational
area that connects the pedestrian routes from
Kitay-Gorod and Lubyanka to Zamoskvorechye
and Museon Park. Third, this project was chosen
through a high-profile international competition
(90 applications from 27 countries), which is also
an exception for Moscow rather than the rule, but
nevertheless — a significant achievement in the
international competition practice, “revived” by
Marina
(LEED Platinum
can serve as a demonstrative example of solving
the tasks at hand.
The project was designed by the firm of
Christoph Ingenhoven, becoming the largest
project undertaken by this international
architectural firm from Düsseldorf in the history
of the company’s existence. At first glance, it
turned out to be a quite expected, bland and
massive “glass giant.” Four towers — two higher
office buildings, with usable area amounting
to an impressive 175,000 sqm each and two
residential buildings with 1,042 apartments
(including penthouses) — follow the boundaries of
the site, forming a semblance of a city block with
the typical curtain of trees along the perimeter.
The buildings have a shared podium that contains
shops, restaurants, a food court, fitness center,
swimming pool, supermarket and various venues
for events. Local residents, judging by public
comments, were not terribly inspired by the
architectural design, while barely paying any
attention to the fact that Marina One had two
platinum environmental certificates at once (LEED
Platinum and the local Green Mark Platinum), and
criticized it for the disproportionately high cost
of the project and the exterior’s unimaginative
appearance. The situation was saved by record
high energy efficiency, a favourable location and
a unique, green landscaped area – the largest in
Marina Bay. According to commercial figures, the
complex succeeded: approximately 70% of the
complex was already occupied by tenants by the
time of opening. And today, when the landscape
design concept has been implemented in full,
the complex has also become a popular local
sightseeing attraction.
The concept, proposed from the outset by
ingenhoven architects for the inner courtyard,
was named Green Heart. In line with this idea,
the interior walls of all four towers were to be
covered with winding “vine” louvres. The resulting
bionic atrium consequently forms a protected
green area — the main place of social interaction
among residents, employees and guests of the
whole complex.
The closed competition for the detailed
development of the landscape design was won
by the London firm Gustafson Porter + Bowman
also in 2011. “Such an ambitious project required
an extremely high level of technical design
coordination between the landscaping work and
the building itself so from the very beginning we
worked very closely with the specialists from
ingehoven architects,” said the firm’s partner,
Mary Bowman. “We proposed to increase the
building-landscape interpenetration even further.
The wavy louvres along the inner facades of the
buildings, reminiscent of rice paddy terraces,
inspired the idea to create a route inside the
public space which would feature various thematic
zones. As a result, the Green Heart has three
parts: Tropical Forest at the very bottom, then
Cloud Garden, while the upper level was named
Mountain Peak.
Altogether, 163,583 plants comprised of
386 different species were planted here: trees,
shrubs, ferns, palms, bamboo, creeping and
sprawling plants. All of them were grown specially
for the project in local nurseries. In the lower part
there is a lowland tropical forest, in the middle
(levels 4–15) there is the flora of what is known
as a mountainside cloud forest, while above
the “clouds” visitors can see trees and shrubs
with characteristic crooked stems along with
too: the neighboring lots began to be built upon
one after another. However, Holzmarkt itself
avoided this fate. Initially, this was a result of
a confluence of contingencies: the soil in this
part of the embankment was contaminated with
radiation; cleaning it required time and money.
While the city looked for businesses prepared to
shoulder this burden, seven enterprising young
people occupied part of the riverbank which had
been overlooked by the municipal services — a
spit of land with a wooden construction container
sitting on it. Here they held wild open-air parties
and showed films. Their Bar 25 became an
epicenter of local life and soon came to resemble
a circus wagon without its wheels. It existed for
seven years, but then the project to cleanse the
site of unused waste was at last completed, and
in 2012 the city put this riverside plot up for sale,
packaging the scrap of land on which the bar
stood with several neighboring plots.
The owners of Bar 25 decided that the end of
their brainchild was a chance to begin something
new. So they designed Berlin’s first district of
subcultures. Since the seven individuals could
not carry out this plan by themselves, they set
up a club of activists, Mörchenpark e.V., open
to all who wanted to play an active role in public
life. They also invited investors and created
the management company Holzmarkt plus e.G.
The charity Stiftung Abendrot helped with the
acquisition of the plot of land, a guarantee of the
possibility of the project’s long-term development.
Work began immediately and by 2025
will include construction of two major revenue
producers — a boutique hotel at one end of the
plot and a hybrid combining an innovation centre
and a student hostel at the other. Taken together,
these functions will occupy 35,000 sq.m.
Architecturally, it will constitute a picturesquely
contrasting pair; the architects are
“We care about the environment in which we live and do our best to make it friendly
and comfortable to live in,” says Oleg Shapiro of the main principles behind his work.
“There is an approach to architectural design which focuses on making the ‘boxes’
which architects design as expressive as possible; we think this is outdated. For us
what is important is not just the architecture of buildings, but in the first place the space
between them.”
Anna Martovitskaya: Oleg Arkadievich, you
and your firm do a lot of work with urban
landscapes. With regard to this type of
project, what are the main challenges you as
architects encounter today?
Oleg Shapiro: I would name two main aspects.
The first is, of course, the type of public space
with which we have to work. These spaces can
be very different. There are parks — landscapes
which are clearly isolated in the structure of
the city. And, on the contrary, there are open
landscapes — streets, squares, small public
gardens, embankments — which are an integral
part of the city’s fabric. In designing these spaces
utterly different approaches should be employed.
And probably the second most important
challenge is the need for what we call ‘pervasive
design’, i.e. work which includes both the micro
and macro scales at the same time. No landscape
exists in isolation from the city, and even when
the architect is faced with a local task relating to
a particular public space, work has to begin with a
detailed analysis of the context and surroundings —
with studying the map of transport routes,
functional zoning, etc.
For instance, we are currently working on a
regeneration project for the center of Tula, for
the area around the kremlin. We have designed a
landscaping project for the disused embankment,
recreated the historical square, and made a new
pedestrian street. But before suggesting that we
make the street pedestrian, we carried out both
micro-modelling, showing how the traffic around
this street will change, and macro-modelling,
ART OVRAG.
existing local communities (of cyclists, runners,
BMX-ers), we realized that what was needed there
was areas in which people could do cyclical types
of sport (including running, cycling, BMX-ing,
roller-skating, skateboarding, biathlons).
AM It seems to me that your most intensive
experience of working and communicating
with local residents was the three years that
you were curating ART OVRAG, the annual
festival of urban culture in Vyksa. What did
this experience give you?
O S Vyksa is a small town in the Nizhny Novgorod
Region. It might not seem very far from Moscow,
but there are no transport connections — no
trains or boats and no planes. So the town is
absolutely isolated, but, on the other hand, it
has always done quite well due to the fact that
it has the Vyksa Metal Factory (owned by OMK).
The festival of urban culture was held there at
the initiative of the charitable foundation OMK-
Uchastie from 2011 forwards, and usually
involved performers of all kinds — dancers,
artists, sculptors, musicians — from both Russia
and abroad, with a view to their stay having a
direct impact on the town. For instance, graffiti
has remained on building facades and art objects
are still to be seen in the town park and on the
streets. In other words, after each festival the
face of the town had clearly changed and in this
respect we felt a strong affinity for its orientation
and subject matter. It was another matter that this
art expansion took place fairly chaotically and the
art objects, for instance, sprang up on incidental
sites, rusted, and needed repairing. Predictably,
all this met with neither understanding nor, still
less, delight among local residents; the festival in
effect existed parallel to the life of the town and
did not take sufficient account of residents’ real
needs. That’s why OMK invited us to structure this
art invasion and direct its efforts into a peaceful
channel, make it beneficial for Vyksa. And for us
this experience was extremely interesting and
important: we had to understand in what order
and using what artistic means we should act upon
the town so that the qualitatively new environment
needed by residents would gradually take shape.
For this task three years turned out to be a
perfectly adequate time period: we organized the
process and now the development of the festival
is in the hands of professional curators.
AM Most of your work involves designing public
spaces for new residential complexes —
i.e. commercial landscapes, you could say.
From the point of view of typology, are these
the same urban public spaces or are there
different principles which govern how they are
designed?
O S The principles are the same. The difference
is in the scale of the projects and in their degree
of privacy. But do you know the main reason why
I love projects like this? Because they are the
best proof that greened landscaped spaces are
something which our towns and cities need. When
there is the political will, you can create a single
park or landscape an embankment, but to make
complex consistent changes possible, business
интервью Дэвида Кона / interview by David Cohn
(University of Virginia, UVA)
Since founding their practice in Barcelona in the late 1990s, architects Iñaki Alday and
Margarita Jover have concentrated on landscape and urban-planning projects, focusing
particularly on environmental issues. One of their best-known projects is the Water Park
for the 2008 World Exposition in Zaragoza, Spain, where they pioneered techniques of
incorporating the natural dynamics of river flooding into landscape design. Both partners
are now on the faculty of the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia (UVA) in
the United States, where Alday co-directs the university's Yamuna River Project (YRP) in
Delhi, India. This multidisciplinary research and cooperation programme aims to recover
the city's heavily-polluted river and its tributaries and convert them into an integrated
network of parks as part of an overall strategy to improve the quality of life in the city.
didn't know that. But we preserved that hidden
knowledge of the place, and now on windy days,
you can walk along the water and you are protected
from the wind by the earthen berms. Our third big
idea was that the water would remain the structural
backbone of the park — the system of capturing,
cleaning, and moving water. We were taking water
from an irrigation channel, cleaning it through
sedimentation and natural filters, and circulating
it through vegetation in other irrigation channels,
to improve its quality before it arrives at the
lagoons for leisure use, including swimming. This
was very challenging, because the quality required
for public bathing is very high. The water is then
recirculated in the lagoons and renovated in a
series of wetlands in the floodable area, where it
is given back to the river through the process of
infiltration.
DC There was a big flood right before the Expo
opened, as I recall.
IA The river floods to different degrees every
year. But there was an unusually big flood one
week before the opening, affecting part of the
Expo precinct. It caused a national crisis. Of
course, the Water Park was flooded too, but it
wasn't a catastrophe because it was supposed to
flood. We try to refrain from using the concept of
catastrophe; our task is to transform the natural
dynamics of a river into something that is part of
the landscape.
DC How do you design a park to be flooded?
Does a lot of sediment and debris accumulate?
IA The area that floods is a natural park with
paths, trees, outdoor furniture, and vegetation. The
river does the maintenance through its flooding,
and during the rest of the year it is maintained by
sheep, which keep the vegetation manageable.
In the Aranzadi Park in Pamplona, we stumbled
upon another innovation in flood design. We made
room for the river not along its banks, but in a lowlying
area nearby. Talking to the farmers there,
and seeing a flood, we found a low area inside the
meander that was the first to fill with water during
Emilio Ambasz: the origin of the green
Emilio Ambasz — the
ambassador of the greenarchitecture
movement
One of the pioneers and ambassadors of the green-architecture movement is
the Argentinian Emilio Ambasz, of whom Tadao Ando has said: “It was Emilio
Ambasz who at the very beginning of his career first drew our attention to
nature and the environment; ever since he has striven for an interpenetration
of nature and architecture.”
Ambasz believes that architecture should be
pragmatic, but that its main objective is to
touch us emotionally. It’s for this reason that his
architecture is so secluded and poetic. This is
architecture that doesn’t belong to a particular
epoch and doesn’t even necessarily belong to a
particular place. His designs are more like dreams
in which architecture and landscape merge
fantastically and stunningly. Ambasz himself
says: “We should build our houses in the earth
if only because we are not wanted on the earth.
Construction of any kind is a reproach to nature.”
Ambasz’ buildings are a clear illustration of
his quest for a cosmological model; in them he has
incarnated his most ambitious ideas. His strongest
work is undoubtedly his Casa de Retiro Espiritual,
which was designed in 1975 initially for Cordoba
(Spain), but was eventually built in 2004 outside
Seville. This project’s free-standing faсade is a
rethinking of many key concepts in architecture —
the relationship between the building and
landscape, sky, and human beings. The building
is simultaneously both here and there, both
inside and outside. Its structure is unpretentiously
modernist and at the same time conservative and
traditional, naturally domestic and convincingly
authentic. This is a stage set for human activity,
scenery which can take any form.
When you look at Ambasz's designs, you
can’t help imagining buildings belonging to
ancient civilizations, prehistoric primeval huts,
caves, terraced gardens, ziggurats, labyrinths,
amphitheaters, and the ruins of tombs. Ambasz
joins in the quest for such archetypes because
he insists that “in each of us there is a profound
thirst for ritual, ceremony, and pageantry, magical
garments and gestures. My task is to find an
architectural form for the primordial things such as
birth, love, death. These forms work with existence
at the level of emotions, passions, and essence.”
Ambasz's works is based on uncompromising
idealism. He believes that any architecture project
which does not try to propose a new or better image
of life is immoral. “I work to create an urbanism of
the future where you’ll be able to open a door and
step straight out into a garden, on whichever floor
you live… In a densely populated city it is possible
to reconcile the need to have a roof over your head
with the emotional need for green spaces. Striking a
balance between the human desire for comfort and
the well-being of nature is crucial for the survival of
our civilization.”
