Every year, more than seven lakh people across the world, die of Vector-Borne Diseases (VBDs) such as
Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Japanese Encephalitis, Zika etc. These diseases impede economic
development through direct medical costs and indirect costs such as loss of productivity and impact on
tourism in addition to the enormous mortality. In India, Vector Borne Diseases pose a significant risk to
most of the population due to rapid urbanization, increased movement of people and goods,
environmental changes, and biological challenges.
India has made considerable progress in managing these VBDs over the last few years, due to
interventions for case management and Vector Control. However, there is still a long road ahead to
achieve complete victory over these deadly VBDs. TheGovernment of India has targeted to eliminate
Malaria from India by 2030 through the National Framework for Malaria Elimination. Integrated Vector
Control, new technologies, sound environmental management practices along with community
education & participation would play a pivotal role in managing and eliminating VBDs.
The National Dialogue on Protecting Communities: Vector Control in Action will bring together key
stakeholders (National programme managers, innovators, technical experts, policy‐makers, Research,
Global agencies, Innovation institutions, and funding agencies) to initiate a dialogue on Public Health
with a focus on Vector Control, smart cities and public-private partnerships.
