Program Note
By the time a person is four years old—long before their first fun wind band class—they
can count to ten. So I’ve never understood why beginning music students are only given
pieces in rigid, often plodding, 4/4, 3/4 or 2/4 meters. Music, like life, is neither rigid nor
plodding (well, at least not interesting music!). Thus, COUNT TO TEN is my contribution to
the repertoire for beginning musicians who have a lifetime of wonderful, compelling pieces
ahead of them that will be filled with chromaticism, syncopations, and mixed meters.
With its built-in drone and percussion parts, the piece is designed to sound good
acoustically, but it will sound many times better when the students are paired with any of
the cinematic-style accompaniment tracks—especially the "Full" version that combines
all three elements of the percussion (strong downbeats and steady quarter beats), the
Bb drone (for tuning and atmosphere), and the groove ostinati weaving through the music
and adding a modern syncopation.
The premise is simple: count up, then down again from a grand peak of 9/4. This is not a
time signature I would normally choose even for professionals, because it’s easier to read
subdivisions. But there's an important and purely psychological reason I opted for it here:
if beginning musicians can achieve playing in 9/4, it may forever dispel any fear they’ll
have of larger meters, and playing in 5, and maybe even in 7, will seem like a relative
breeze. In other words, in addition to being a primer for contemporary repertoire,
COUNT TO TEN is a middle school psyche-out: if you can count to ten, you certainly
can count to nine!
Technical Notes
COUNT TO TEN is an electroacoustic piece in which the ensemble has the option of
playing along with a prerecorded track, with the goal of creating one seamless, sonic
entity. The audio track and the ensemble should be at the same (loud!) volume level, so
that the audience perceives them as one. High resolution audio files are offered at four
different tempi, and can be downloaded from the private COUNT TO TEN page link
received upon request.
Bonus:
Musicians can practice and record this piece at home by downloading the
accompanying audio track that includes the pulse. Please visit Ms. Shapiro’s website,
www.alexshapiro.org, to send an email requesting file access.
concert information can be included on the Alex Shapiro website, and on social media!
ii.
Performance Notes
Having the students play along with any of the audio tracks is optional, but the additional,
cinematic sound makes everything sound better, and may inspire them even more!
With the goal of giving every teacher as many options and tools as possible, there are
four accompaniment track options. The first three are for rehearsal purposes:
1. PERCUSSION only (more interesting sounding than a metronome);
2. DRONE only (helpful with intonation);
3. PERCUSSION and DRONE.
The fourth track is the most compelling and is for performance, as well as rehearsal.
It includes the PERCUSSION, DRONE, and GROOVE.
Each of these accompaniment tracks is offered at four tempi/durations:
120 bpm (1:06), 110 bpm (1:11), 100 bpm (1:18), and 90 bpm (1:27).
The performance goal is 120 bpm.
The parts are designed to ensure that each of the students will interchangeably get to play
the drone, play the moving line part, and singspiel the numbers of the time signatures. The
percussionists play and singspiel simultaneously throughout the piece.
The singspiel may be vocalized as either a purely spoken number, or sung at the pitch
indicated by the crosshead note, in any comfortable register. By the final 1/4 bars,
musicians are invited to shout!
Each wind part contains an indication reminding wind students to raise their instrument up
to their lips during their final measure of singspiel, in order to make a rhythmically smooth
transition and quickly prepare their embouchure for sounding the first played note of the
next bar. At the faster tempi, should students have any difficulty with this, it's fine if they
don't vocalize the final number of the bar, thus allowing more preparation time. The
percussionists will always be vocalizing the meter count.
Only one number between 1 and 9 in English has two syllables! It’s psychologically easy
for a student to slip into thinking of “seven” as two quarter notes, even though the music
takes advantage of the word to use it as two eighth notes. Teachers may opt to have their
students do as professional players sometimes do, especially at faster tempi: tell the
musicians to say “set” instead of "seven".
Interestingly, we pronounce the word “set”, but it would really be spelled “sept”, short for
the Latin word for seven, “septum”. This might raise fun questions about the month of
September, inviting an explanation as to why the ninth month of the year is named after
“seven”. Supplemental teaching materials are available with COUNT TO TEN that delve
into a variety of numeric and chronological topics, including the history of the modernday
Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian, or Roman calendar.
iii.
Rehearsal setup:
The rehearsal room will need a basic PA system, ideally with stereo monitor speakers that
can play loudly. A stereo pair should be placed facing the front of the ensemble. There is a
stereo performance track which the ensemble (and later, the audience) hears, as well as
the stereo track that includes the click track, heard solely by the conductor through
headphones or earbuds. These tracks are routed from a laptop computer connected to an
audio mixer via a small audio interface. A thorough .pdf download of the setup instructions
is provided with the audio tracks.
Technical setup:
Connect a laptop computer and a pair of stereo earbuds or headphones to a small audio
interface, which in turn connects to an audio mixer. Open a simple multitrack digital audio
application, and load the accompaniment track that has the click into one stereo channel
(left and right), routed solely to the earbuds or headphones worn by the conductor. Next,
load the track without the click into two more stereo channels: one pair routed to the
stage monitors so the ensemble can hear the track, and another pair routed to the house
speakers for the audience. The audio track uses panning effects, so be sure that it's
routed to the audience in stereo.

Stage monitors, house
speakers, audio interface,
and microphones (if the
ensemble is being mic’ed)
are connected by cables to
the mixer, which is usually
placed in the back of the
auditorium or on the side of
the stage.
Composer Biography
Alex Shapiro (b. New York City, 1962) is known for her genre-blind acoustic and
electroacoustic works. Published by her company Activist Music LLC, Alex’s music is
heard daily in concerts and broadcasts across the U.S. and internationally, and can be
found on over thirty commercially released recordings.
Long established in the professional chamber music world, Ms. Shapiro is also known for
her adventurous electroacoustic pieces for wind band at all performance levels. Sought
after for her seamless melding of live and recorded sounds which often employ striking
visual and physical elements, Alex often uses technology in each aspect of a commission,
from the creation of the music, to “webhearsals” in which she coaches thousands of
musicians around the world, to customized, multimedia material delivery web pages, to
the finished piece and its reach to the public through social media.
Shapiro has been a clinician at The Midwest Clinic, the Texas Music Educators
Association, the British Columbia Music Educators Association, CBDNA, and many similar
conferences and residencies, speaking about creative uses of technology in concert
performance. Among her many writings are the chapters, Releasing a Student's Inner
Composer for the 2013 book, Musicianship: Composing in Band and Orchestra, and
Reaching Out and Bringing Women In for the 2020 release, The Horizon Leans Forward…
Stories of Courage, Strength, and Triumph of Underrepresented Communities in the Wind
Band Field, both for GIA Publications. She also authored an 8,000-word article published
in two 2014 journals of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles
(WASBE) titled, The e-Frontier: Electroacoustic Music, Multimedia, Education, and
Audiences in the Digital World. Two of Alex’s electroacoustic band pieces, Paper Cut, and
Tight Squeeze, are included in the GIA book/CD series, Teaching Music Through
Performance in Band, Volume 10.
Educated at The Juilliard School and Manhattan School of Music, Ms. Shapiro is an
enthusiastic leader in the new music community, and advocates for other artists through
speaking appearances, published articles, and volunteerism. She is the Symphonic and
Concert writer member of the Board of Directors of ASCAP, and serves on the Board of
Directors of the ASCAP Foundation and The Aaron Copland Fund for Music. After 21 years
in Manhattan and another 24 in Los Angeles, Alex relocated in 2007 to Washington State's
remote San Juan Island. Ms. Shapiro’s wildlife photographs and her music can be
experienced through social media and her website, www.alexshapiro.org.
