Together We Stand, Divided We Fall

As technology has evolved, so has the focus and form of
how we gather in community. At first, long ago, the focal point of
society was the hearth. Everyone would sit around the fire, telling
and listening to stories, always facing each other. These stories
that were handed down from person to person, from generation
to generation, shaped the society. Everything was personal.
Then along came the radio, set up in the center of the village. People would go
there and listen, looking up at the speaker on the pole. Now no one was looking at
each other, though they were still together, still gathered around the same thing. The
story did not need to be memorized and was not handed down on the person-toperson
level anymore. This phenomenon did not change the content of the story but
made the value of another person significantly less. A decade or three later, the television
was developed and the centrality was lost altogether. Instead of gathering in a
circle, people would sit in a line, staring at the TV, no longer looking at or even possibly
aware of each other. The society-shaping wisdom and storytelling was replaced by
something that was more of an entertainment. This change went as far as to replace
human babysitters and mothers. Many generations grew up captivated by the blue
screen and enveloped less by personal love and personal touch. After this, computers
arrived. This completely erased even the paltry community that a TV allows; with a
computer, there is total isolation. Your back is to everyone, no one is seeing the same
thing, and there is no unifying force or experience.
At first, at least, computers were confined to one place, and this offered some
relief. There was no way to transport a desktop computer. Once you were finished with
it, there was no picking it up again to waste more time on it. Soon enough came the
laptops and they occupied the most intimate place in our space the place (the lap) that
belonged to our children and our loved ones. People started going to bed with this new
friend.
Eventually, the smart phone was invented. This allowed people to carry their
escape from society with them, and the unity in humanity degraded further. A group of
teenagers sitting around a table may seem like a rekindling of the original story-telling
posture around the fireplace, but this time one fundamental thing is different. The community
is actually NOT around the table. It is virtual. If you ask this new generation
how many friends they have, they will say thousands, but if you ask them what their
friends look like, they will show you their Instagram photos. Social media has changed

our method of communication from the natural method—
speech—to an unnatural method that our bodies are not designed
for: text. Imagine communicating a complex emotion with dry
text. Actually that is what I am trying to do now and I am sorry if I
am not completely successful.
This process actually began in the church way before the
invention of the radio. People’s perception of the Bible was affected
the same way after the invention of print. People used to go to
Church in order to hear the Scripture in the community of likeminded persons with whom they were in deep personal
communion. This personal communion with one another brought people into communion with God Himself because
He said, “Where two or three gather together in My Name I am there with them”. (Matt. 18-20)
In order to hand down the Scriptures, people memorized entire books such as the Psalms. They learned their
Scriptures from another person such as their priest or their spiritual father. We may think that having a personal Bible
would help with the process but making the Bible more available made the Scriptures more impersonal. As a result,
we have become caught up in text and now we think that since we have our own Bible, there is no need for the
community of the Church. We sit at home and read, or rather don’t read and then complain about not reading, and
we think we understand our Faith. We Christians have lost the knowledge of our faith, communion with one another
and we are totally unable to hand down something that is vitally important for our communion with God.
The Church is meant to be experienced in community, not in isolation. There is a saying, “One Christian is
not a Christian”. Desmond Tutu likewise shares an expression from South Africa, “I am because you are.” In
other words, “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together”. Community and
unity are at the center of the Orthodox Faith. Our communion with one another makes us human and the communion
with God brings our humanity to a new level through the humanity of Christ.
In the world of globalization and individualism not only our faith but also our humanity itself is challenged.
Not only have we stopped going to church, we also rarely eat together. Most of the food consumed in the developed
world is either in fast food restaurants facing the streets or behind the wheel in our cars. Through this, we have lost
our personhood and we have become lonely individuals. The word individual describes the smallest particle of the
society that cannot be divided any further.
Divide and conquer is the motto of this world. Unity, communion, and community is the language of the
Church. The Church calls humanity to become the Body of Christ. The body is healthy when all the organs work in
harmony. No organ is less important then the others but none of the individual organs can exist without being nourished
by the others. The same is true for members of human society and in our case members of the Body of Christ
that is the Church.
The example of feral children helps us to understand this phenomenon of being human in the
community of others. These children rarely integrate fully into society. The lack of proper care, emotional
stimulation, and education hinders their social progress and delays their mental development.
Some people like “feral children” get isolated from society by chance and that becomes the tragedy of
their life. Others, however, separate themselves from community by choice and because of this lack of
community they do not develop to become what God intends for each and every one of us-- to become
“fully human” in the image of Christ our God.
This constant splitting is a result of the devil’s love of ease. It is easier to make people fall if
they are split apart, if they have no support. We see this most obviously in the case of the Desert Fathers. Only those
who are rooted and grounded in Christ succeed in their asceticism. There are a few “diamonds of the desert” as they
are known, but there are many hundreds more who failed in their mission. Those with no community who relied on
their own strength as an individual mostly failed. They succumbed to temptation, were eaten by wild animals, went
insane or met other awful ends. The Fathers who succeeded had been built up from day one by the other monks,
taught and led by those who knew more than they did. When they did go to the desert, they still continued to be a
part of their monastic community by going back for communion or receiving gifts of food and supplies from the
townsfolk or the other monks.

The Holy Trinity is the ultimate community, full of respect and love for one another. Father, Son and Holy
Spirit are in perfect communion, supporting one another and acting out of love for one another and for us. The sacrificial
love of the Son for the salvation of humanity is not an action in a vacuum for He says in His prayer in the garden
of Gethsemane "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be
done." (Luke 22-42) In the same way that Christ submits His will to the will of the Father we are also instructed
several times in our Liturgy to “Commend ourselves to one another and our whole life to Christ our God”.
We should try our best to emulate the communion of the Holy Trinity in our communion with one another.
We need to stop thinking we can do it all ourselves. In Boxford, Massachusetts, there is a tutorial program for homeschoolers
that allows students freedom over what they learn, while at the same time providing them opportunities to
learn things their parents perhaps could not teach them. Their slogan is, “Relax. You no longer have to do it all
alone.” This has been the Church’s slogan from the beginning, and it should continue to be. No one has to do it
alone, and we are all here to help and be helped by one another. Community underpins everything in this life.
Let us learn to love one another as the united nation of Pentecost in communion with God. We are all Disciples
of Christ our God and He prayed for us to His Father, and ours, saying: “While I was with them in the
world, I kept them in Your name.” (John 17:12)
We Christians are called to be one nation under God. We are called to become children of God who deeply
love our Heavenly Father, who are in communion with one another the way the Heavenly Father and the incarnate
Son are in communion and to love one another the way Christ loved us.

Ενωμένοι Στεκόμαστε Διχασμένοι Πέφτουμε

Καθώς η τεχνολογία έχει εξελιχθεί, έτσι έχει αλλάξει και η μορφή του πώς συνγκεντρωνόμαστε σε μία
κοινότητα. Πριν από πολύ καιρό, το επίκεντρο της κοινωνίας ήταν η φωτιά. Όλοι κάθονταν γύρω από τη φωτιά,
διηγώντας και ακούγοντας ιστορίες, πρόσωπο με πρόσωπο. Αυτές οι ιστορίες πέρασαν από άτομο σε άτομο, από γενιά
σε γενιά και διαμόρφωσαν την κοινωνία. Όλα ήταν προσωπικά.
Στη συνέχεια ήρθε το ραδιόφωνο, που στήθηκε στο κέντρο του χωριού. Οι άνθρωποι πήγαιναν εκεί και
άκουγαν κοιτώντας το ηχείο στον πόλο. Τώρα, αν και ήταν ακόμα όλοι μαζί, κανείς δεν κοίταζε ο ένας τον άλλον,
αλλά ακόμα μαζεύονταν γύρω από το ίδιο αντικείμενο. Η ιστορία δεν χρειαζόταν να απομνημονευθεί και δεν
παραδίδονταν πλέον σε προσωπικό επίπεδο. Αυτό το φαινόμενο δεν άλλαξε το περιεχόμενο της ιστορίας, αλλά έκανε
την ανάγκη για άλλα άτομα πολύ μικρότερη. Μια δεκαετία ή τρεις αργότερα, εφευρέθηκε η τηλεόραση και η
επικεντρικότητα χάθηκε εντελώς. Αντί να συγκεντρώνονται σε έναν κύκλο, οι άνθρωποι κάθονταν σε μια γραμμή,
κοιτούσαν την τηλεόραση, δεν κοιτούσαν πλέον ούτε καν πιθανόν γνώριζαν ο ένας τον άλλον. Η σοφία και η
αφήγηση που διαμορφώνουν την κοινωνία αντικαταστήθηκαν από κάτι που ήταν ένα είδος ψυχαγωγίας. Αυτή η
αλλαγή προχώρησε ακόμα και στο να αντικαταστήσει τις ανθρώπινες μπέιμπι σίτερ και τις μητέρες. Πολλές γενιές
μεγάλωσαν αφοσιωμέμες στην μπλε οθόνη και δεν αγκαλιάστηκαν από την προσωπική αγάπη και την προσωπική
επαφή. Μετά από αυτό, έφτασαν οι υπολογιστές. Αυτό διέγραψε εντελώς ακόμη και την μικρή κοινότητα που
επέτρεψε η τηλεόραση. Με τον υπολογιστή, υπάρχει απόλυτη απομόνωση. Γυρνάς την πλάτη σου σε όλους, κανείς
δεν βλέπει το ίδιο πράγμα, και δεν υπάρχει ενοποιητική δύναμη ή εμπειρία.
Στην αρχή, τουλάχιστον, οι υπολογιστές
περιορίζονταν σε ένα μέρος, και αυτό προσέφερε ανακούφιση.
Δεν υπήρχε τρόπος μεταφοράς ενός επιτραπέζιου υπολογιστή.
Μόλις τελείωνες, δεν υπήρχε τρόπος να τον πάρεις μαζί σου
ξανά για να χάσεις περισσότερο χρόνο με αυτό. Πολύ
σύντομα μετά τους επιτραπέζιους υπολογιστές ήρθαν οι
φορητοί υπολογιστές και κατέλαβαν το πιο οικείο μέρος στο
χώρο μας (την αγκαλιά μας), το μέρος που ανήκε στα παιδιά
μας και ατα αγαπημένα μας πρόσωπα. Οι άνθρωποι άρχισαν
να κοιμούνται με αυτόν τον νέο φίλο.

Τέλος, εφευρέθηκε το έξυπνο κινητό τηλέφωνο. Αυτό επέτρεψε στους
ανθρώπους να εχουν έναν τρόπο διαφυγής από την επικοινωνία μεταξύ τους,
και η ενότητα στην ανθρωπότητα υποβαθμίστηκε περαιτέρω. Μια ομάδα
εφήβων που κάθονται γύρω από ένα τραπέζι μπορεί να μοιάζει με
αναζωπύρωση του αρχικού τρόπου αφήγησης ιστοριών γύρω από το τζάκι,
αλλά αυτή τη φορά είναι διαφορετικά. Η κοινότητα ΔΕΝ είναι πραγματικά γύρω
από το τραπέζι. Είναι εικονική. Εάν ρωτήσετε αυτή τη νέα γενιά πόσους φίλους
έχουν, θα σας πουν χιλιάδες, αλλά αν τους ρωτήσετε πώς μοιάζουν οι φίλοι
τους, θα σας δείξουν τις φωτογραφίες τους στο Instagram. Τα κοινωνικά μέσα έχουν αλλάξει τη μέθοδο επικοινωνίας
μας από τη φυσική μέθοδο - ομιλία - σε μια αφύσικη μέθοδο για την οποία δεν έχουν σχεδιαστεί τα σώματά μας:
μύνημα. Φανταστείτε να επικοινωνείτε ένα πολύπλοκο συναίσθημα με ένα ξερό μύνημα. Για την ακρίβεια, αυτό
προσπαθώ να κάνω τώρα και να με συγχωρέσετε εάν δεν είμαι απόλυτα επιτυχής.
Αυτή η διαδικασία ξεκίνησε στην εκκλησία πολύ πριν την εφεύρεση του ραδιοφώνου. Η αντίληψη των
ανθρώπων για τη Αγία Γραφή επηρεάστηκε με τον ίδιο τρόπο μετά την εφεύρεση του γραπτού λόγου. Οι άνθρωποι
πήγαιναν στην Εκκλησία για να ακούσουν τη Γραφή σε μία κοινότητα από ανθρώπους με ίδιες ιδέες με τους οποίους
ήταν σε βαθιά προσωπική επικοινωνία. Αυτή η προσωπική επικοινωνία μεταξύ τους, έφερε τους ανθρώπους σε
κοινωνία με τον ίδιο τον Θεό γιατί είπε, «Όπου δύο ή τρεις συγκεντρώνονται στο Όνομά Μου είμαι εκεί μαζί τους».
(Ματ. 18-20)
Για να παραδώσουν τις Γραφές, οι άνθρωποι απομνημόνευαν ολόκληρα βιβλία όπως οι Ψαλμοί. Έμαθαν τις
Γραφές τους από άλλα άτομα όπως τον ιερέα τους ή τον πνευματικό τους πατέρα. Μπορεί να πιστεύουμε ότι η
κατοχή της προσωπικής μας Αγίας Γραφής θα βοηθούσε με τη διαδικασία, αλλά όσο πιο διαθέσιμη έγινε η Αγία Γραφή
τόσο πιο απρόσωπες έγιναν οι Γραφές. Ως αποτέλεσμα, έχουμε καταπιαστεί με τον γραπτό λόγο και τώρα πιστεύουμε
ότι αφού έχουμε τη δική μας Αγία Γραφή, δεν υπάρχει ανάγκη για την κοινότητα της Εκκλησίας. Καθόμαστε στο σπίτι
και διαβάζουμε, ή μάλλον δεν διαβάζουμε και μετά διαμαρτυρόμαστε γιατί δεν διαβάζουμε και πιστεύουμε ότι
κατανοούμε την πίστη μας. Εμείς οι Χριστιανοί έχουμε χάσει τη γνώση της πίστης μας, την επικοινωνία μεταξύ μας
και είμαστε εντελώς ανίκανοι να παραδώσουμε κάτι που είναι ζωτικής σημασίας για την επικοινωνία μας με τον Θεό.
Η Εκκλησία είναι γραφτό να είναι μια εμπειρία που τη ζεις μέσα στην κοινωνία και όχι στην απομόνωση.
Υπάρχει ένα ρητό, «Ένας Χριστιανός δεν είναι Χριστιανός». Ο Ντέσμοντ Τούτου μοιράζεται επίσης μια έκφραση
από τη Νότια Αφρική, «Υπάρχω επειδή υπάρχεις». Με άλλα λόγια, «Η ανθρωπότητά μου είναι συνδεδεμένη
με τη δική σου, γιατί μπορούμε μόνο να είμαστε άνθρωποι μαζί». Η κοινότητα και η ενότητα βρίσκονται στο
επίκεντρο της Ορθόδοξης Πίστης. Η επικοινωνία μεταξύ μας, μας κάνει ανθρώπους και η επικοινωνία με τον Θεό
φέρνει την ανθρωπότητά μας σε ένα νέο επίπεδο μέσω της ανθρωπότητας του Χριστού.
Στον κόσμο της παγκοσμιοποίησης και του ατομικισμού δεν αμφισβητείται μόνο η πίστη μας, αλλά και η ίδια
η ανθρωπότητα μας. Όχι μόνο έχουμε σταματήσει να πηγαίνουμε στην εκκλησία, αλλά επίσης σπάνια τρώμε μαζί. Τα
περισσότερα τρόφιμα που καταναλώνονται στον ανεπτυγμένο κόσμο είναι είτε σε εστιατόρια γρήγορου φαγητού που
βλέπουν στους δρόμους, είτε πίσω από το τιμόνι στα αυτοκίνητά μας. Με όλα αυτά, χάσαμε την προσωπικότητά μας
και γίναμε μοναχικά άτομα. Η λέξη άτομο περιγράφει το μικρότερο σωματίδιο της κοινωνίας που δεν μπορεί να
χωριστεί περαιτέρω.
Η διαίρεση και η κατάκτηση είναι το σύνθημα αυτού του κόσμου. Η ενότητα, η κοινωνία και η κοινότητα είναι
η γλώσσα της Εκκλησίας. Η Εκκλησία καλεί την ανθρωπότητα να γίνει το Σώμα του Χριστού. Το σώμα είναι υγιές
όταν όλα τα όργανα λειτουργούν αρμονικά. Κανένα όργανο δεν είναι λιγότερο σημαντικό από τα άλλα, αλλά κανένα
από τα μεμονωμένα όργανα δεν μπορεί να υπάρχει χωρίς να τρέφεται από τα άλλα. Το ίδιο ισχύει για τα μέλη της
ανθρώπινης κοινωνίας και στην περίπτωσή μας τα μέλη του Σώματος του Χριστού που είναι η Εκκλησία.
Το παράδειγμα των άγριων παιδιών μας βοηθά να κατανοήσουμε αυτό το φαινόμενο του ανθρώπου στην
κοινότητα των άλλων. Αυτά τα παιδιά σπάνια ενσωματώνονται πλήρως στην κοινωνία. Η έλλειψη κατάλληλης
φροντίδας, συναισθηματικής διέγερσης και εκπαίδευσης εμποδίζει την κοινωνική τους πρόοδο και καθυστερεί την
ψυχική τους ανάπτυξη. Μερικοί άνθρωποι, σαν τα «άγρια παιδιά», απομονώθηκαν τυχαία από την κοινωνία και αυτό
γίνεται η τραγωδία της ζωής τους. Άλλοι, ωστόσο, διαχωρίζονται από την κοινότητα κατά επιλογή και εξαιτίας αυτής
της έλλειψης επικοινωνίας δεν αναπτύσσονται για να γίνουν αυτό που ο Θεός σκοπεύει για τον καθένα από εμάς - να
γίνουν «πλήρης άνθρωποι» καθ’ εικόνα και καθ’ ομοίωση του Χριστού και Θεού μας.

Αυτή η συνεχής διάσπαση είναι αποτέλεσμα του διαβόλου ο οποίος ψάχνει την εύκολη λύση. Είναι ευκολότερο
να κάνεις τους ανθρώπους να καταρρεύσουν εάν χωρίζονται, αν δεν έχουν υποστήριξη. Αυτό το βλέπουμε προφανώς
στην περίπτωση των Πατέρων της Ερήμου. Μόνο αυτοί που έχουν τις ρίζες τους και στηρίζονται στον Χριστό
πετυχαίνουν στον ασκητισμό τους. Υπάρχουν μερικά «διαμάντια της ερήμου» όπως είναι γνωστά, αλλά υπάρχουν
πολλές εκατοντάδες ακόμη που απέτυχαν στην αποστολή τους. Εκείνοι που δεν αναμείχθηκαν με την κοινωνία και
βασίζονταν στη δική τους δύναμη ως μεμονωμένα άτομα απέτυχαν ως επί το πλείστον. Έπεσαν στον πειρασμό,
τρώγονταν από άγρια ζώα, τρελάθηκαν ή συνάντησαν άλλες απαίσιες ακραίες καταστάσεις. Οι Πατέρες που πέτυχαν
είχαν γαλουχηθεί από την πρώτη μέρα από τους άλλους μοναχούς, που διδάσκονταν και οδηγήθηκαν από εκείνους που
ήξεραν περισσότερα από αυτούς. Όταν πήγαν στην έρημο, συνέχισαν να αποτελούν μέρος της μοναστηριακής τους
κοινότητας επιστρέφοντας για κοινωνία ή λαμβάνοντας δώρα τροφίμων και προμηθειών από τους κατοίκους της πόλης
ή τους άλλους μοναχούς.
Η Αγία Τριάδα είναι η απόλυτη κοινότητα, γεμάτη σεβασμό και αγάπη ο ένας για τον άλλο. Ο Πατέρας, ο Υιός
και το Άγιο Πνεύμα βρίσκονται σε τέλεια κοινωνία, υποστηρίζουν ο ένας τον άλλο και ενεργούν από την αγάπη για τον
άλλο και για εμάς. Η θυσιαστική αγάπη του Υιού για τη σωτηρία της ανθρωπότητας δεν είναι μια ενέργεια εν κενώ γιατί
λέει στην προσευχή Του στον κήπο της Γεθσημανής «Πατέρα, αν είσαι πρόθυμος, πάρε αυτό το κύπελλο από
μένα · όχι όμως η θέλησή μου, αλλά η δική σου να γίνει. " (Λουκάς 22-42) Με τον ίδιο τρόπο που ο Χριστός
υποβάλλει το θέλημά Του για το θέλημα του Πατέρα μας διδάσκεται επίσης αρκετές φορές στη Θεία Λειτουργία μας να
«Παραδοθούμε ο ένας στον άλλο και όλη μας τη ζωή στον Χριστό τον Θεό μας».
Πρέπει να προσπαθήσουμε το καλύτερο για να μιμηθούμε την κοινωνία της Αγίας Τριάδας στην κοινωνία
μεταξύ μας. Πρέπει να σταματήσουμε να πιστεύουμε ότι μπορούμε να τα κάνουμε όλα μόνοι μας. Στο Boxford, της
Μασαχουσέτης, υπάρχει ένα πρόγραμμα εκμάθησης για τους κατ 'οίκον μαθητές που τους επιτρέπει την ελευθερία της
μάθησης, ενώ παράλληλα τους παρέχουν ευκαιρίες να μάθουν πράγματα που οι γονείς τους ίσως δεν μπορούσαν να
τους διδάξουν. Το σύνθημά τους είναι, «Χαλαρώστε. Δεν χρειάζεται πλέον να το κάνετε μόνοι σας. " Αυτό ήταν το
σύνθημα της Εκκλησίας από την αρχή, και πρέπει να συνεχίσει να είναι. Κανείς δεν είναι υποχρεωμένος να το κάνει

PRESIDENTS REPORT ...
IT’S SUMMER—the kids are on vacation from school and you're probably looking forward to some time away
from work. The season traditionally affords us opportunities to play, relax, or travel that the rest of the year usually
cannot, but summer doesn’t mean taking a vacation from church.
Mark your calendars. Our church will be celebrating its feast day with Great Vespers on Saturday, August
14th, and Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 15th followed by a Festal Luncheon. As you already know our annual
festival preparations are underway. From the kitchen to the gyro corner, barbecue grill, church tours, and EVERYONE
in between, there are so many aspects that go into running this well-oiled machine from months to days before and
after the event. Thanks to ALL who volunteer their time, talents, and treasures. Without you, we would not be able
to share our Orthodox Faith and our Greek culture with the greater Somerville community and beyond. Your support
is invaluable. This annual festival brings to action our Church’s Mission and Vision. Again, we appreciate everyone's
contribution!
The dates of the 3-day festival are September 10th, 11th, and 12Th. Please get involved! We have many
opportunities for our faithful to assist, and we appreciate your support. An online festival volunteer schedule will be
made available soon, where you will be able to mark when and where you would like to volunteer during the festival.

Our major renovation project is underway and once again we need you. You are an important part of our
church history. You started at Dormition Church on Bow Street and then continued to 29 Central Street. Your Grandparents
and Parents made this church what it is today. You are an important part of this church’s legacy, which
means we need you to spread the word to friends and family who no longer live in Somerville. Even though you
might live far away, you will always be part of our family! We are asking for all parishioners and beyond to extended
family, friends, and former parishioners to help us in any way they can by financially supporting the renovation of
God’s house. The church we grew up together, the church our great-grandparents and grandparents helped build.
It’s our turn to financially contribute and fix what our ancestors built because if we don’t the legacy will eventually
come to an end and it will be sad that future generations cannot enjoy what we have enjoyed all these years. Let us
all get excited for our Beloved Dormition Church’s much-needed renovation project, the beautification of God’s

Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες, Οικογένεια και Φίλοι,
ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΑΛΟΚΑΙΡΙ - τα παιδιά βρίσκονται σε διακοπές από το σχολείο και εσείς πιθανόν ανυπομονείτε να
πάρετε άδεια από τις δουλειές σας. Η εποχή αυτή μας προσφέρει συνήθως την ευκαιρία να παίξουμε, να
χαλαρώσουμε ή να ταξιδέψουμε κάτι που συνήθως δεν μπορούμε να πραγματοποιήσουμε τον υπόλοιπο χρόνο, αλλά
καλοκαίρι δεν σημαίνει ότι κάνουμε διακοπές από την εκκλησία.
Σημειώστε τα ημερολόγια σας. Η εκκλησία μας θα γιορτάσει την ονομαστική της εορτή με τον Μέγα Εσπερινό
το Σάββατο, στις 14 Αυγούστου και τη Θεία Λειτουργία την Κυριακή, στις 15 Αυγούστου και θα ακολουθήσει ένα
Εορταστικό Γεύμα. Όπως γνωρίζετε ήδη, οι ετήσιες προετοιμασίες του φεστιβάλ βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη. Από την
κουζίνα έως την γωνιά του γύρου, από τη σχάρα μπάρμπεκιου έως τις ξεναγίσεις στην εκκλησία και όλους τους
ενδιάμεσους χώρους, υπάρχουν τόσες πολλές πτυχές για την λειτουργία αυτής της καλά λαδωμένης μηχανής
πολλούς μήνες πριν την εκδήλωση καθώς και πολλές ημέρες μετά. Ευχαριστούμε ΟΛΟΥΣ ΕΣΑΣ που προσφέρετε
εθελοντικά το χρόνο, τα ταλέντα και τους θησαυρούς σας. Χωρίς εσάς, δεν θα μπορούσαμε να μοιραστούμε την
Ορθόδοξη Πίστη μας και τον Ελληνικό μας πολιτισμό με την ευρύτερη κοινότητα του Somerville και παραπέρα. Η
υποστήριξή σας είναι ανεκτίμητη. Αυτό το ετήσιο φεστιβάλ ενεργοποιεί την Αποστολή και το Όραμα της εκκλησίας
μας. Και πάλι, εκτιμούμε την συνεισφορά όλων σας!

Το μεγάλο έργο ανακαίνισης βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη και για άλλη μια φορά σας χρειαζόμαστε. Είστε ένα
σημαντικό μέρος της ιστορίας της εκκλησίας μας. Ξεκινήσατε από την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου στο Bow Street και μετά
συνεχίσατε σε αυτήν στο 29 Central Street. Οι παππούδες και οι γονείς σας έφτιαξαν αυτήν την εκκλησία όπως είναι
σήμερα. Είστε ένα σημαντικό μέρος της κληρονομιάς αυτής της εκκλησίας, που σημαίνει ότι σας χρειαζόμαστε να
διαδώσετε σε φίλους και οικογένειες που δεν ζουν πλέον στο Somerville ότι χρειαζόμαστε την βοήθειά τους. Ακόμα κι
αν ζείτε πολύ μακριά, θα είστε πάντα μέλη της οικογένειάς μας! Ζητάμε από όλους τους ενορίτες και από την
εκτεταμένη οικογένεια τους, τους φίλους και τους πρώην ενορίτες να μας βοηθήσουν με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο
μπορούν, υποστηρίζοντας οικονομικά την ανακαίνιση του οίκου του Θεού. Η εκκλησία που μεγαλώσαμε μαζί, η
εκκλησία που βοήθησαν οι προπαππούδες και οι παππούδες μας. Είναι η σειρά μας να συνεισφέρουμε οικονομικά και
να διορθώσουμε αυτό που έχτισαν οι πρόγονοί μας, γιατί αν δεν το κάνουμε, θα χάσουμε την κληρονομιά μας και θα
είναι πολύ λυπηρό το γεγονός ότι οι μελλοντικές γενιές δεν θα μπορούν να απολαύσουν αυτό που εμείς έχουμε
απολαύσει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια. Ας είμαστε όλοι ενθουσιασμένοι για το πολυαναμενόμενο έργο ανακαίνισης της
αγαπημένης μας Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου, τον καλλωπισμό του οίκου του Θεού. Σας παρακαλώ να επικοινωνήσετε

SUNDAY SCHOOL
This summer Father, Presvytera, Domenica, Athena and I will be hard at work creating a new
curriculum for our Sunday school. The curriculum has always been a challenge as many of the student
workbooks haven’t been updated in many years and resources can be difficult to find.
Domenica and Athena are modeling our new curriculum from the religious education curriculum used in
Greece. In addition we have examined the makeup of the classes and at this time we have a kindergarten class led
by Anna Mercina and Presvytera, 4th grade taught by me and 6th through 10 grades led by our divinity student
from Holy Cross Markela returning for a second year. All of the lessons and material will be online for parents, families.
We are very excited to be able to offer this program to our students and we look forward to growing our program.

Και στα Ελληνικά ....
Αυτό το καλοκαίρι ο πάτερ, ή πρεσβυτέρα, ή Ντομένικα, ή Αθηνά, και εγώ θα δουλέψουμε
σκληρά δημιουργώντας ένα νέο πρόγραμμα σπουδών για το Κατηχητικό Σχολείο μας. Το πρόγραμμα
σπουδών ήταν πάντα μια πρόκληση, καθώς πολλά από τα βιβλία εργασίας των μαθητών δεν έχουν
ενημερωθεί εδώ και πολλά χρόνια και οι πόροι μπορεί να είναι δύσκολο να βρεθούν.
Η Ντομένικα και η Αθηνά μοντελοποιούν το νέο μας πρόγραμμα σπουδών από το πρόγραμμα σπουδών
θρησκευτικής εκπαίδευσης που χρησιμοποιείται στην Ελλάδα. Επιπλέον, εξετάσαμε τή διαμόρφωση των τάξεων καί
αυτή τη στιγμή έχουμε μια τάξη νηπιαγωγείου με επικεφαλής την Άννα Μερσίνα και την πρεσβυτερέρα, 4η τάξη που
διδάσκεται από εμένα, και 6η έως 10η τάξη με επικεφαλής τη μαθήτριά μας από τον Τίμιο Σταυρό Μαρκέλα που
επιστρέφει για δεύτερη χρονιά. Όλα τα μαθήματα, τό υλικό θα είναι στό διαδίκτυο για γονείς καί οικογένειες.
Είμαστε πολύ ενθουσιασμένοι που μπορούμε να προσφέρουμε αυτό το πρόγραμμα στους μαθητές μας και
ανυπομονούμε να μεγαλώσουμε το πρόγραμμά μας.

If you would like to sponsor a coffee hour after Church, please contact the Church Office. Coffee
hours do not have to be only in memory of deceased loved ones. Two or more families could also
join together and sponsor a coffee hour.
You might want to consider hosting a coffee hour in honor of a family member’s birthday, name day, wedding, anniversary,
graduation, promotion, retirement, and beginning of fall, end of the winter, an early spring … or “just because!”
If you want the Parish Council to prepare the coffee hour for you, please contact the Church Office for the different
rates that are applicable depending upon what you would like served.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!
Once again our festival is fast approaching. Before you know it, the festival weekend of September
10, 11 and 12th will be upon us. So, now is the time to think about how are we going to help
our church.
We can help in many ways! We all know the drill by now. We can either help during the week of
the festival by skewering kabobs, cutting vegetables or by putting the final touches together that will
help this year's festival be another success.
Most help will be needed during the 3 day weekend in various areas!
We can also help by donating towards the festival, or by putting an ad in our festival ad book,
as soon as possible. Anything you decide to do will be greatly appreciated and beneficial. Please let us
know by calling the church office, so we can mark you down. As always, thank you in advance.
