As the Father and Spirit are unoriginate, so<br />
the Word, who was born from the Virgin for<br />

pleased to be crucified in the flesh, and to<br />
undergo death, and to resurrect the dead, by<br />
His glorious resurrection.<br />
Apolytikion of St. Catherine<br />
Let us praise the most auspicious bride of<br />
Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai,<br />
our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly<br />
silenced the eloquence of the impious by the<br />
sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr,<br />
she asks great mercy for all.<br />
Apolytikion of the Church<br />
Ιn giving birth, you did preserve your virginity;<br />
in your dormition you did not forsake the world<br />
O Theotokos. You were translated onto life,<br />

O Protection of Christians that never falls,<br />

HEBREWS (9:11-14)<br />
BRETHREN, when Christ appeared as a<br />
high priest of the good things that have<br />
come, then through the greater and more<br />
perfect tent (not made with hands, that is,<br />
not of this creation) he entered once for all<br />
into the Holy Place, taking not the blood<br />
of goats and calves but his own blood,<br />
thus securing an eternal redemption. For if<br />
the sprinkling of defiled persons with the<br />
blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes<br />
of a heifer sanctifies for the purification<br />
of the flesh, how much more shall the<br />
blood of Christ, who through the eternal<br />
Spirit offered himself without blemish to<br />

men exercise authority over them. But it<br />
shall not be so among you; but whoever<br />
would be great among you must be your<br />
servant, and whoever would be first among<br />

serve, and to give his life as a ransom for<br />

Fr. Anthony’s Thoughts about the Sunday Gospel<br />
Two kinds of powers<br />
St. Mark 10 (32-45)<br />
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,<br />
Today we have a beautiful Gospel and a wonderful saint. The Gospel<br />
teaches us about two kinds of kingdoms and two kinds of powers, the<br />
kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of this world. Both kingdoms are<br />
offering power and authority to us, humans. The kingdom of Heaven and the power and the authority<br />
that come with it are very different from the kingdom and the power that the kingdoms of this<br />
world offers.<br />
We may think that this is not a difficult thing to understand and exercise in our lives, but<br />
quite frankly it is the most difficult task for humans. Just remember that when Jesus was in the desert<br />
one out of three temptations was an offer of power over the kingdoms of the world. The demon<br />
asked him to worship him and promised power over the kingdoms of the world. Christ refused to do<br />
it by telling the devil and reminding us that we should worship only God and that the only true<br />
source of authentic power is God.<br />
We know that confusing the right power with the wrong power is very easy because we see<br />
it in today’s Gospel. Two of Christ's disciples come to him and ask him if they can sit by his side<br />
when he comes into his kingdom. Christ explains to them that only the Father gives this kind of<br />
power to us.<br />
Later, on Holy Thursday he showed them the difference between the authority that comes<br />
with the kingdom of God and the corrupt authority that comes with the power of this world. He also<br />
showed his disciples what to do to get the right authority. On Holy Thursday he put on an apron,<br />
bent down, and washed the feet of his disciples. Then he said to them, that if they would like to be<br />
in His Kingdom, they should do the same towards each other. He said that in His kingdom those<br />
who would like to be first should serve the others.<br />
But this is not an easy thing to do. Serving others without condition requires a lot of courage.<br />
For that, we have the example of Mary of Egypt, who shows us that with the power of God we<br />
can have enough courage to transform our lives. Mary was a harlot, the worst kind you can imagine.<br />
She was so bad that she could not enter a church in Jerusalem. We do not know what the conditions<br />
of her life were before she became a prostitute and what were the reasons for it. But we know<br />
one thing with the power of the Holy Spirit and very hard work she became the holiest person of<br />
her time.<br />
But this is not an easy thing to do. Serving others without condition requires a lot of courage. For<br />
that, we have the example of Mary of Egypt, who shows us that with the power of God we can have<br />
enough courage to transform our lives. Mary was a harlot, the worst kind you can imagine. She was<br />
so bad that she could not enter a church in Jerusalem. We do not know what the conditions of her<br />
life were before she became a prostitute and what were the reasons for it. But we know one
thing with the power of the Holy Spirit and very hard work she became the holiest person<br />
of her time. In modern times we do not believe anymore that it is possible to become a<br />
saint and obtain the authentic power of service and love but Merry of Egypt and the thief<br />
on the cross prove us otherwise. When I look at this congregation, I know that there are<br />
many saints sitting in those pews. You may not believe me but that is Ok. Most importantly<br />
however I see a lot of candidates including myself that if we are not there, yet we can<br />
surely do it.<br />
So let us pray with the psalmist saying to God: “Sprinkle me with hyssop and I<br />
shall be pure, cleanse me and I will be whiter than snow” Amen.<br />
Οι σκέψεις του π. Αντωνίου για το Ευαγγέλιο της Κυριακής<br />
Σήμερα έχουμε ένα όμορφο Ευαγγέλιο και έναν υπέροχο άγιο. Το Ευαγγέλιο μας διδάσκει<br />
για δύο είδη βασιλείων και δύο είδη εξουσιών, τη βασιλεία των ουρανών και τη βασιλεία αυτού<br />
του κόσμου. Και τα δύο αυτά βασίλεια προσφέρουν δύναμη και εξουσία σε εμάς τους ανθρώπους.<br />
Η βασιλεία του Ουρανού και η εξουσία που πηγάζει από αυτήν είναι πολύ διαφορετικές από τη<br />
βασιλεία και τη δύναμη που προσφέρουν τα βασίλεια αυτού του κόσμου.<br />
Μπορούμε να πιστέψουμε ότι αυτό δεν είναι ένα δύσκολο πράγμα να καταλάβουμε και να<br />
ασκήσουμε στη ζωή μας, αλλά ειλικρινά αυτό είναι το πιο δύσκολο έργο για τον άνθρωπο. Απλά<br />
θυμηθείτε ότι όταν ο Ιησούς ήταν στην έρημο, ένας από τους τρεις πειρασμούς ήταν μια<br />
προσφορά εξουσίας πάνω στα βασίλεια του κόσμου. Ο δαίμονας του ζήτησε να τον λατρέψει και<br />
υποσχέθηκε εξουσία πάνω από τα βασίλεια του κόσμου. Ο Χριστός αρνήθηκε να το κάνει<br />
λέγοντας στον διάβολο και υπενθυμίζοντας μας ότι πρέπει να λατρεύουμε μόνο τον Θεό και ότι οι<br />
μόνες αληθινή πηγή πραγματικής δύναμης είναι ο Θεός.<br />
Γνωρίζουμε ότι το να συγχέουμε τη σωστή εξουσία με την λανθασμένη εξουσία είναι<br />
πολύ εύκολο γιατί το βλέπουμε στο σημερινό Ευαγγέλιο. Δύο από τους μαθητές του Χριστού<br />
έρχονται σε αυτόν και τον ρωτούν αν μπορούν να κάθήσουν δίπλα του όταν αποκτήσει τη<br />
βασιλεία του. Ο Χριστός τους εξηγεί ότι μόνο ο Πατέρας μας δίνει αυτή τη δύναμη.<br />
Αργότερα, την Μεγάλη Πέμπτη τους έδειξε τη διαφορά μεταξύ της εξουσίας που έρχεται με τη<br />
βασιλεία του Θεού και της διεφθαρμένης εξουσίας που έρχεται με τη δύναμη αυτού του κόσμου.<br />
Έδειξε επίσης στους μαθητές του τι να κάνουν για να λάβουν τη σωστή εξουσία. Τη Μεγάλη<br />
Πέμπτη, έβαλε μια ποδιά, έσκυψε κάτω και έπλυνε τα πόδια των μαθητών Του. Τότε τους είπε ότι<br />
αν θέλουν να είναι στη βασιλεία Του, θα πρέπει να κάνουν το ίδιο ο ένας προς τον άλλον. Ότι στο<br />
βασίλειό του εκείνοι που θα ήθελαν να είναι πρώτοι πρέπει να υπηρετούν τους άλλους.<br />
Αλλά αυτό δεν είναι εύκολο πράγμα. Το να υπηρετείς τους άλλους χωρίς όρους απαιτεί<br />
πολύ θάρρος. Σε αυτό έχουμε το παράδειγμα της Μαρίας της Αιγύπτου, η οποία μας δείχνει ότι με<br />
τη δύναμη του Θεού μπορούμε να έχουμε αρκετό θάρρος για να μεταμορφώσουμε τη ζωή μας. Η<br />
Μαρία ήταν μια πόρνη, το χειρότερο είδος που μπορεί να φανταστεί κάποιος. Ήταν τόσο κακή που<br />
δεν μπορούσε να εισέλθει σε μια εκκλησία στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Δεν γνωρίζουμε ποιες ήταν οι
συνθήκες της ζωής της πριν γίνει πόρνη και ποιοι ήταν οι λόγοι γι αυτό. Αλλά γνωρίζουμε ένα<br />
πράγμα, ότι με τη δύναμη του Αγίου Πνεύματος και πολύ σκληρή δουλειά έγινε το πιο ιερό<br />
πρόσωπο της εποχής της.<br />
Στη σύγχρονη εποχή μας δεν πιστεύουμε πια ότι είναι δυνατό να γίνει κάποιος άγιος και<br />
να αποκτήσει την αυθεντική δύναμη της υπηρεσίας και της αγάπης αλλά η Μαρία και ο ληστής<br />
στο σταυρό μας αποδεικνύουν το αντίθετο. Όταν κοιτάω αυτή την εκκλησία, γνωρίζω ότι<br />
υπάρχουν πολλοί άγιοι που κάθονται σε αυτούς τους πάγκους. Μπορεί να μην με πιστεύετε,<br />
αλλά δεν πειράζει. Το πιο σημαντικό, όμως, είναι ότι βλέπω πολλούς υποψηφίους,<br />
συμπεριλαμβανομένου και εμού, ότι εάν δεν έχουμε φτάσει ακόμα εκεί, μπορούμε να το κάνουμε.<br />
Ας προσευχηθούμε, λοιπόν, με τον Βασιλιά Δαυίδ που λέει στον Θεό: «Ράντισέ με με<br />
υσσώπο και θα είμαι καθαρός, καθάρισέ με και θα είμαι πιο λευκός από το χιόνι». Αμήν<br />

On the Sunday following the Feast of the Saint we offer Artoklasia<br />
and a trisagion service for the good health of the living members and eternal<br />
memory of the deceased members of the donor family. This Sunday<br />
we celebrate the feast of St. Leonidas .<br />
Γιορτάζουμε όλους τους αγίους των οποίων οι εικόνες έχουν αφιερωθεί<br />
από τους ενορίτες μας. Την Κυριακή που ακολουθεί την εορτή του Αγίου<br />
προσφέρουμε Αρτοκλασία και τρισάγιο για την υγεία των ζώντων μελών και για την<br />
αιώνια μνήμη των εκλιπόντων μελών της δότριας οικογένειας. Αυτήν την Κυριακή<br />
γιορτάζουμε τον Άγιο Λεωνίδα.<br />

NEW YORK TRIP—GOLDEN CLUB<br />
The Golden Club will be visiting the Saint Nicholas Church in New York City on Saturday,<br />
May 18th. We are opening seats to our parishioners at this time. If seats are remaining on May<br />
1st we will open the trip to others. The cost of the trip is $60.00 and must be paid when reserving<br />
a seat. We will be leaving the church at 6:45 am and returning at 7 pm. After a tour of Saint<br />
Nicholas, the bus will take us to Astoria for lunch at Stamis' Restaurant, lunch is not included in<br />
the cost of the trip. We will also have some time to shop at the Mediterranean Market. If you<br />

Το Golden Club θα επισκεφθεί την Εκκλησία του Αγίου Νικολάου στη Νέα Υόρκη το<br />
Σάββατο 18 Μαΐου. Αυτή τη στιγμή ανοίγουμε θέσεις για τους ενορίτες μας. Εάν απομένουν<br />
θέσεις , θα ανοίξουμε το ταξίδι σε άλλους στη 1η Μαΐου. Το κόστος του ταξιδιού είναι 60,00 $<br />
και πρέπει να πληρωθεί κατά την κράτηση θέσης. Θα αναχωρήσουμε από την εκκλησία στις 6:45<br />
π.μ. και θα επιστρέψουμε στις 7 μ.μ. Μετά από μια ξενάγηση στον Άγιο Νικόλαο, το λεωφορείο<br />
θα μας μεταφέρει στην Αστόρια για μεσημεριανό γεύμα στο Stamis' Restaurant. Το μεσημεριανό<br />
γεύμα δεν περιλαμβάνεται στο κόστος της διαδρομής. Θα έχουμε και λίγο χρόνο να ψωνίσουμε<br />

This Pantry will be available to people in our community who are in need.<br />
