X INTRODUCTION. old commentary (that existed?, though entering into detailsin certain places.* The Yimfma-vatthu is n catechetical treatise of the merits of Dewas, who were hlessed with ahodes in accordance with the good acts that they per formed in previous births. Yimfmas are the ahodes of pleasure of the gods, and are- so called as they have sprung up in accordance with the merits resulting from the amount of good deeds performed by them. They are of one and two yojanas in extent, are brilliant with gems, and being of variegated forms are really worth seeing. colours andi They are called vimiinas as their size is particularized. Being a narrative of the vimanas the book is called Vimfma-vatthu, and it commences with pi than te sovannamayam, &c. This is a brief explanation of its contents. As the beauty, wealth, and retinue of the gods, and the good deeds of which they are the results, form the subject of this narrative, and it points out the effects of causes, and! describes the vimilnas that have sprung up in accordance with meritorious acts performed, it is called Vimiina- vatthu. By whom was the Vimana-vatthu propounded, where,, when, and for what purpose? This Vimana-vatthu con sists of queries and replies. The replies were given by some of the dewas, some of the queries were put by tho Lord Buddha, some by Sekra and others, and some by the- Sriivaka-Theras. The major part, however, of it was delivered by Mahil Moggalluna, who, for a period of one asaiikeyya and one hundred thousand kappas t in order to become one of the principal disciples of Buddha; and in due course having practised the perfections of a disciple, and acquiring thesk supernatural faculties, and the four attainments * It is plain from the above that there existed an older Commentary which was enlarged upon by the author, evidently the Great Atthakathu referred to by Prof. Oldenberg.
