INTRODUCTION. X11J<br />
Five Nikfiyas, the Dlgha, Majjliima, Sanyutta, Anguttara.<br />
and Khuddhaka, it belongs to the Khuddaka Nikaya.<br />
Of the nine divisions of the Scriptures, the Sutta, Geyya,<br />
Veyyfikarana, Gfithfi, Udana, Itivuttaka, Jutaka, Abbhutadhamraa,<br />
Vedalla it belongs to the Gathfi.<br />
Of the eighty-four thousand sections of the Scriptures*<br />
which remain, eighty-two thousand were delivered by<br />
Buddha, and two thousand by the priesthood. This work<br />
is included in several of the eighty-four thousand sections-<br />
of the Scriptures, as is stated by the treasurer of the<br />
Dhamma (Ananda).<br />
It has seven vaggas or chapters.<br />
Pltha vagga, Cittalata vagga, Pfiricchattaka vagga,<br />
Manjitthaka vagga, Mahfvratha vagga, Puyiisi vagga,<br />
Sunikkhitta vagga.<br />
In the<br />
1st chapter there are 17 stories.<br />

When the other stories are taken into account there will<br />
be 123 stories. Of the chapters Pittha vagga is the first,<br />
and of the stories Sovannaplthavatthu, of which the versa<br />
Pithan te sovannatnayan is the first.<br />
This Commentary is called the<br />

Paramattha Dlpani."<br />
It is a lucid exposition of the text, and explains at length<br />
some of its terms. It was composed by a Thera named<br />
Dhammapala, evidently a member of the Mahfi Wihfira sect,<br />
as he states in the Introduction that he composed it<br />
"<br />
agreeably to their views." Though the date is not given,<br />
I think we may fairly infer from the style of the work that
