“A traveller. I love his title. A traveller is to be reverenced as such. His profession is the
best symbol of our life. Going from - toward; it is the history of every one of us.
The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till
that other is ready. It is a great art to saunter.” Henry David Thoreau
AIR TRAVEL WITH A CELLO???
Talk about an odd subject to write about, but have you heard about famed musician, Lynn Harrell, who
travels all around the world purchasing two airline tickets—one for himself and one for his priceless
instrument, a 300-year-old cello valued at 3 million dollars? “Cello Harrell” as he affectionately calls it,
is issued its own boarding pass and even collects frequent-flier miles on its own account. There has
been no information on what drink of choice “it” prefers.
When I was producing shows on Crystal Cruises there was a cellist who also had to acquire his
priceless 18th century cello a separate seat at the expense of the cruise line. They must have really
loved this guy!!!
So, here’s the deal. Mr. Harrell is a major international star, a two-time Grammy Award winner and a
frequent guest of orchestras world-wide. He has collaborated with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and
pianist André Previn. In 1994, Mr. Harrell appeared at the Vatican with the Royal Philharmonic in a
concert that was the Vatican’s first official memorial to the Holocaust.
“Mr. Harrell collects miles for his cello on United. But after Delta cut him off, Cello Harrell stopped
collecting miles on American as a precaution against another stern punishment”, according to The
Wall Street Journal.
According to Cello Harrell’s human guardian, “It weighs only 15 pounds and it doesn’t eat!” The now
famous cello has always been required to have a window seat and to be strapped in so as not to
obstruct any emergency exit.
In 2001 Delta Airlines discovered Mr. Harrell was getting double miles for buying a seat for his prized
instrument and wiped out his frequent flier mileage and gave him a stern warning.
So fade in 2013 when American Airlines discovered the famed cellist was accruing mileage on
their mileage program. The airline not only erased the instrument’s mileage, but also his personal
Advantage Miles. And to top it off, banned Mr. Harrell from EVER being an American AAdvantage
member again. They sited the fact he had been warned by Delta but continued to break the rules.
Which by the way is commonly done around the world with musicians, even high school orchestras.
Let’s face it, some tickets can cost up to $8000 and that means an orchestra is forced not to hire a
famous performer if they have to also pay for a ticket for the musical instrument to fly. It is much more
cost effective to hire locally. So frequent flier miles are sometimes the only way an international star
can offset the cost of flying of making an orchestra pay not only for him but for his instrument. It is the
difference in working of not!!!
THE TRIAL AND TRIBULATIONS OF CELLO FLYING!!!
I started to investigate the dangerous world of cello flying and lo and behold I have uncovered a secret,
dark and sometimes deadly (well, broken) journey for this over-sized, deep voiced, orchestra star.
The celebrated cellist Alban Gergardt suffered a terrible loss when US airport security agents
carelessly snapped his best and expensive bow in half. According to Mr. Gergardt, “! have been
traveling internationally for almost 25 years, hopping back and forth between continents. As I am
a rather trusting person in possession of a very strong cello case, I am one of the few cellists who
travels without buying an extra seat for the cello. I check my poor Goffriller into the hold with the
suitcases.”
“The only times my cello got damaged – twice – was when I had a second ticket and the case fell
to the ground. Nothing major, a little crack which was easily be glued, and absolutely my fault. The
baggage handlers never did us any harm.”
But then recently on a flight from Berlin via Brussels and Chicago to rehearse Prokofiev’s
Cellosymphony in Madison, WI., the baggage handlers open his prized case and then “stuffed” the
bow (which many musicians feel is the voice of their instrument) improperly into the case and shaped
it. How did he know? The baggage handler left a note!!!!!!
Mr Gergard said the cost of that non-repairable bow was the price of a new Mercedez!
Another story?
Here is yet another Cello misadventure from a renowned cellist: “Contrary to what might be expected,
I find my 18th-Century cello to be the perfect traveling companion. Quiet, reassuring and serene, he
sits patiently in his white case on all the flights we do together, never talking back, and rarely drinking
too much. The only thing that can shatter his composure is that most cello-hating of companies,
British Airways. Some of the experiences I’ve had with them have been astounding. Once, in front of
my seven-year-old son, a BA official threatened to have me arrested for not arriving at the gate early
enough.”
“Another time, I left a friend, the violinist Joshua Bell, in charge of my cello while I went to the
bathroom. He was horrified when a lady came into the airport lounge, picked up my instrument and
started walking away with it. When he objected, her response was: “This has to go on board now - or
your friend doesn’t fly.”
“All he could do was abandon his much-beloved computer, and carry the cello on board himself. I was
traumatized when I returned to find an abandoned computer and no cello - but there was no question
of an apology.”
MORE?????
Wesley Eure’s
Tripping
the Planet
Paul Dornian said a group of students from Poland returning home from Calgary earlier this month
were told their four cellos could not all take their paid seats on the plane.
Air Canada told the students it had a policy of no more than two cellos per plane. (SAY WHAT?)
AIRLINE REGULATIONS FOR INSTRUMENTS
Okay, so here are some rules, which do vary from airline to airline. Many are calling on the
international musicians unions to insist the airlines come up with a uniform, across the board, policy
for transporting expensive and bulky instruments.
On the airlines side of things….many of these “non sharing” mileage restrictions were put in place
because of abuse to the programs. Some businesses were demanding all of the mileage their
employees earned while flying on business needed to be the put in the CEO’s account and some
fliers were booking two or more seats on really cheap flights to earn miles to use on way more
expensive trips. Heck, if you bought three seats on a deeply discounted round trip flight from LA to
NYC you could rack up about 15,000 frequent flier miles in one domestic trip!
WestJet
According to spokesman Robert Palmer “Musical instruments: Although seats may not be purchased
for instruments, we will accept small instruments as part of the carry-on baggage allowance.
Exceptions may be made for irregular-sized instruments. All instruments must be stowed in the
overhead compartment, under the seat or in other approved locations. This is left to the discretion
of the cabin crew and Customer Service Agent upon checking flight and baggage loads. Instruments
may also be accepted in checked baggage when they are properly packed.”
There is no rule banning cellos or any other specific musical instrument. However, they must be able
to be stowed in the overhead bins. If they are too large or of an odd shape, they must go below the
wing. You cannot buy a seat for a musical instrument because the seat and its restraint system are
designed and rated for a person.”
AMERICAN
AIRLINES”
Transportation
Of Cellos
If you’re traveling
on other airlines,
you must contact
each airline in
your itinerary to
check their policy
and transportation
charges. If you’re
traveling on an
American Airlines
operated flight the
following rules apply:
Cellos are not accepted for transportation on all types of aircraft.
To carry on a cello, an additional seat must be purchased at the applicable fare. A window bulkhead
seat must be available, with the owner in the adjoining seat. This is not possible on all types of aircraft.
Additionally, a First Class seat must be purchased on some types of aircraft. The cello must be
properly strapped by use of the seat belt. Any excess / overweight / oversize charges will apply to
checked cellos. For cellos over 100in / 250cm long, please contact American Airlines for shipping.
The regular check-in and carry-on baggage allowance applies to the passenger, even when an extra
ticket is purchased for the cello.
Students pay for four extra seats only to be told two cellos not allowed on flight!
The director of Mount Royal University’s Conservatory is calling on airlines to set a firm policy when it
MAY THE WIND ALWAYS BE TO YOUR BACK!
comes to transporting musical instruments.
By Angela Romeo
“Can This Marriage Be Saved?” was a magazine column that
analyzed the merits of a relationship. The article passed judgment
as to which “marriage” was salvageable and which was not. The
union of Gina and John Carey would never be in that column. Their
relationship is a blend of love, respect, passion and a shared musical
voice that is hard to resist.
Gina sees her voice as a gift to be used to bring joy. “It is not the
fame and fortune that drives me,” she said. “It is the passion for music
and its ability to spread joy that keeps me motivated.”
As an eight year old Gina sang gospel with her pastor father
and a karaoke machine. She performed daily concerts at recess.
The schoolyard interludes landed her first agent - the elementary
school principal. Soon Gina was known throughout the LA Unified
School District. Later Gina signed with Grapetree Records. Initially
background talent on gospel rap records, Gina’s first solo recording
was an R&B gospel project. Her career took her to the famed Apollo
and venues around Europe. As her career ebbed and flowed, Gina
would leave music only to return. It was her marriage to John, that
renewed her passion for music.
Gina’s latest project, Melodic, includes the track Loving You.
Dedicated to John, the track evokes the soulful sounds of Regina
Belle and Luther Vandross. Melodic, and her earlier, Love Letters, ,
are songs with lyrics to get lost in.
Born and raised on Chicago’s Southside, John’s music was his
refuge from the tough conditions around him. Self taught and
encouraged by his mother, John created a sound rooted in smooth
jazz but enriched by the sound of Chicago Blues. His projects are
sexy, sultry and sensual. New Beginnings, featuring Gina’s vocals,
is music for adults. It captures feelings of a life lived and a life full of
promise. No Compromise , his aptly titled live studio album, features
twelve “electric soul bluesy tunes” a testament to John’s 35 plus
years as a musical artist.
“Music, like jazz and blues, is built on improvisation. But”, John
quickly points out, “improvisation can’t be done unless one
understands the instrument being played and understands the roots of
music. I learned to play by ear. Being taught to read music enhanced
my experience as a musical artist.” .John, a former public school
teacher, struggles to ensure that the next generation learns music is
more than digitally reproduced sounds.
Today Gina and John, in solo or joint projects, keep the music alive.
They can be heard live at various venues in the Coachella Valley,
including Woody’s “After Dark” Background (Mondays 7 pm – 11
pm, 317 N Indian Canyon Dr. Palm Springs CA) Miramonte Resort
Lounge, (Sassy and Sultry Thursdays, 5 pm – 8 pm, 45000 Indian
Wells Lane, Indian Wells, CA 92210) and Marriott - Shadow Ridge,
(Wednesday, 5 pm – 9 pm 9003 Shadow Ridge Rd. Palm Desert CA
92262). For more information visit their websites, www.ginacarey.net.
award-winning playwright. Ned and Will are recruited to serve as
plaintiffs and “public faces” for a lawsuit mounted to challenge the legality
their beliefs.
for professional advice and whose uncanny resemblance to the late Ed
Hello all you FABULOUS people.
WELL DRINKS
WELL MARTINI
FROM $2.50
Pinkie’s Place
I trust you are having a fantastic summer. A lot has happened since our
last column. As you know Kevin and live in Idyllwild and we love it up
here. This past week has been quite interesting.
On Wednesday July 17th , we were under mandatory evacuation orders
due to the Mountain Fire. I never thought that we would be ordered to
leave our home. It is not a good feeling. You walk around the house to
see what you can take with you and realize you just can’t take it all with
you. So you grab the important papers, some clothes, since you don’t
know how long you will be gone, some photos, our dogs and of course
all the food and toys and such for the dogs.
I must say that as we were fleeing our home and the Mountain fire it was
a feeling of sadness. I mean everything we own is in this house. But
then you realize the most important thing is life, our lives and our dog’s
lives. The rest of it could be replaced it was all material things. But that
is still hard to face, losing everything.
We are very blessed to have all of you in our lives. We must have had at
least 15 offers from friends for us to stay at their homes in Palm Springs.
We are so thankful to all of you for your offers, for your prayers and for
your positive thoughts. During a tragedy like this you really begin to see
how many friends you have. Thanks to Carol Kamenis for providing all
the updates on facebook for us, you are amazing.
Thanks to our friend Steve who let us and our dogs stay in his casita for
appreciate his help. But it was a hard time watching the fire and seeing
it keep increasing in size. So I was back to thinking about all the stuff in
our house and we could lose it all.
I must tell you that all of my Pinkie items are safe and sound. In fact one
of the last items I grabbed, on my way out of the house, was my Pinkie
Jewelry…..just cant live without that dontcha know.
Again thank all of you for your friendship and support during this hard
time. We were very happy to let to come home and find everything in
tact. What was a bit worrisome was that as we came up the mountain
the last burn spot we saw was less than a mile from our home. So thank
God the winds did not change.
Please go out and have the most FABULOUS day. Live in the moment
as this moment is all we have. It is great to remember the past and
hope for the future, but this moment is all we truly have.
CARNIVAL OF WONDERS
Mark kalin and Jinger Leigh are an award-winning
American magic couple known for largescale
stage shows and for appearances on
network television specials.
Jinger is both an on-stage assistant and business partner
to husband kalin. In 1997, they formed Supreme
Entertainment Productions and produced Before Your
Very Eyes, a themed revue that played at Trump’s Marina
in Atlantic City, New Jersey. In 1999, together with
comedy magician Jeff Hobson, they staged the magicillusion
show Carnival of Wonders.[1] The show won
awards and prompted Magic Magazine to draw comparisons
with Le Roy, Talma & Bosco.[2] In 2001, kalin
& Jinger purchased the remaining company interest in
Supreme Entertainment and formed a new company,
Majikal Productions, employing the talents of magician
and former Copperfield choreographer Joanie Spina
and leading illusion designer Jim Steinmeyer. Their first
venture under the new company name was Illusionarium
at the Reno Hilton, in Reno, Nevada.[3] Their current
projects include Magic Underground a dedicated
magic venue in Reno.[4]
kalin and Jinger have made numerous television appearances.
They featured in the Gary Ouellet-produced
World’s Greatest Magic II in 1995[5] and NBC’s Hidden
Secrets of Magic in 1996.[6] On the 1998 network
special The World’s Most Dangerous Magic, kalin
performed the “Table of Terror” (a “Table of Death” style
escape).[7]
STEVE
HARRIS
“Bring on
An Interview with Stevo Harris, of Big Bear Adventure Weekend, IBC and
the Bears of Palm Springs.
New York native, Steve Harris (known as Stevo to the Bears) was the Editor in
Chief of A Bear’s Life Magazine, Founder of Big Bear Adventure Weekend and
now is Lead Producer of International Bear Convergence in Palm Springs
premiering in February. LIVE Magazine got to sit down with Stevo to find out
about how he got involved with the Bear Community and what’s next on this
busy guy’s agenda.
LIVE: When did you get involved with the Bear Community?
Stevo: It was thirteen years ago when I walked into a bar called the Dugout
in New York City and found a group of guys that I could hang with and be
comfortable with. I had never heard the term Bear before that, but my nickname
as a kid was BooBear, given to me by my mom when I was born. I guess I was
a Bear from birth! I began to get involved with the Metrobears NY and within
a year I created my first Bear event: Bear Trek in White Plains, NY. It attracted
over 500 guys who packed school buses that took them to a small bar in
upstate New York. The bar was a straight club that had just gone gay and
they were just finishing the new wood deck for the event as the buses were
pulling up. From that event on, I began to attract bears to larger events in the
suburbs just north of NYC. What was 500 attendees turned into over 900. I
have been doing Bear events now for over 12 years!
LIVE: Was that your first event?
Stevo: No, I had been producing events since 1984 while attending Ithaca
College. My first charity event was for the American Cancer Society and
we had raised over $1000 for the organization. I was the MC for the evening
and I convinced the college orchestra to donate their time and play for
the event. We all had a blast and I was given a certificate of appreciation
from the organization and haven’t stopped producing events since then.
That was 29 years ago and It seems like it was yesterday.
LIVE: What brought you to Palm Springs?
Stevo: Let’s just say that the gods had a plan for me. The original reason
I came here was not the reason I’m supposed to be here. I have learned
that a great deal of good can come from bad and.... you can make
great lemonade with lemons. I drink lemonade daily! Palm Springs is a
wonderful place to live and I have made many wonderful friends here.
LIVE: You say the Bear Community in Palm Springs is re-emerging,
did it ever go away?
Stevo: No, not at all, but I think the guys took time out for a readjustment.
Bar happy hours at Hunters (Fur Fridays), Sunday Tea
Dances at the new Barracks, private Bear parties at Mike Gentile’s
and old and new bear organizations such as the Palm Springs Bears
and Bears of the Coachella Valley are spawning new interest in Palm
Springs. I also notice that the younger guys are getting involved and
more groups like the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the Leather
Community here also have stronger ties to the Bears in Palm Springs and are
getting more involved.
LIVE: We have posted ads in LIVE Magazine for Big Bear Adventure
Weekend, but as the founder of this event, what can you tell us about it?
Stevo: BIg Bear Adventure Weekend was created as a laid back, enjoyable
weekend for all. No attitude, great men, pool parties, top entertainment set in the
beautiful mountains of Big Bear on a gorgeous lake. There is no event like it in
the world. My events are not typical. I try and give my attendees an experience.
Of course there are the themed parties, but my goal is that everyone walks away
with new friendships, great memories and great rest. It’s supposed to be a
vacation! My favorite event is the Bears and Beer Sunset Cruise on Saturday
evening as it is a great way for me to mix with the attendees and enjoy the
beautiful view of Big Bear Lake. This year’s featured performer is Taylor Dayne
and I am extremely excited! Of course, I’d love for everyone to come for the
weekend, but folks are also welcome to drive up just for the day or evening and
enjoy the pool parties, tea dances, or the Taylor Dayne event. The event attracts
all types of men. It’s a very diverse crowd of all ages and many of the guys come
back year after year. The City of Big Bear Lake loves us and presented me
with a Citation of Appreciation and Key to the City for the amount of income
our event generated for Big Bear Lake. To celebrate our fifth year anniversary,
the city is allowing us to have the meet and greet event right on the pier on Big
Bear Lake, Friday night. Miller Lite is our beer sponsor and they will be there
supporting us.
LIVE: Some may say you have an easy job throwing parties, is that how you see
it?
Stevo: I’m sorta the man behind the curtain. It looks fun and easy because in
29 years I have learned to make it look that way. I always have fun, but it can
be stressful too. You can’t make everyone happy, but as an event planner for
the Bear Community you work your hardest to make that happen. My life as the
editor of A Bear’s Life also gave some the impression that my life was all about
TV interviews, parties, appearing in movies, Bear events, and dinners, but only a
few got to see what was going on behind the scenes. I enjoy what I do and look
back at many wonderful experiences but it’s a lot of hard work and stress.
LIVE: So what’s next after Big Bear Adventure Weekend? Do you get
to take a break?
Stevo: You mean vacation? (he chuckles) My guy Eric, is moving
to Palm Springs from Ohio so I will be focusing on him and then
International Bear Convergence is just around the corner. My business partner
Chris Vance and I have a lot of work to do before February and we expect a
huge turnout as the hotel is filling up and tickets are selling on target.
LIVE: What is your goal for International Bear Convergence?
I’m quite happy that the introduction of International Bear Convergence to
the area has been embraced not only by the Bears, but also from the city and
local business owners. Knowing that the guys enjoy good food, shopping and
partying, there is no doubt that the hotels and restaurants will profit from a Bear
event in town. Bear Week in Provincetown, Massachusetts is the town’s
biggest event of the year bringing in millions of dollars in tax revenue. Why

the Bears!”
shouldn’t that happen here? Palm Springs is the ultimate vacation
destination and there is no better place to have a Bear event,
especially in February when the rest of the country is cold. There
are so many Bears that have not visited Palm Springs and this is
a perfect reason. The White Party is here, The Dinah is here and
now the Bears will be here. Chris and I hope to make International
Bear Convergence the largest international winter Bear Event on
the west coast of the United States.
LIVE: Any final thoughts?
www.facebook.com/events/370385366318888
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwRzmjZ2EdU
Stevo: Always! I am very blessed. My life has been a wild roller
coaster ride that I love being on and I wouldn’t trade it for the
world. Throughout the years I have met and have interviewed some
very important people in politics and in the entertainment industry
and have worked on some incredible projects, but what will always
impress me the most are the Bears and Cubs I have encountered
during my travels. I am fortunate to have made so many friends
along the way.
I am also proud of the contributions I have made to Bear Culture.
The night A Bear’s Life Magazine was featured on the David
Letterman Show with Kevin Smith will always remain the pinnacle
of my career. I was in the audience that night. Over 21 million
people learned about what Bears and Cubs were in the LGBT
Community on that show, and the traffic on the CBS web site
that night shut down their site for 3 days! We were the first Gay
magazine on “Late Night” television.
Over the years I have seen many positive changes in Bear culture
and sometimes I felt I was outside the fishbowl looking in, but we
as a group within the LGBT Community have come along way. I
am excited that the guys in Palm Springs are inviting their friends
from around the world to come to what may end up being the
largest Bear event in the world, International Bear Convergence,
We have that potential. We live in an incredible city and there’s
not a day that goes by that I don’t stop, look at the Palms and the
Mountains and think, another beautiful day in Palm Springs, bring
on the Bears!
Matt Bomer
www.imdb.com/name/nm0093589/
Matthew Staton “Matt” Bomer (born October
11, 1977) is an American film, stage and television
actor, best known from his role on White
Collar, which premiered in 2009. Making his television
debut with Guiding Light in 2001, Bomer received
notice with his recurring role in the NBC television series
Chuck as Bryce Larkin. Bomer has featured in supporting
roles in such films as the 2005 thriller Flightplan, the 2011
science fiction thriller In Time, and the 2012 comedy-drama
Magic Mike. He starred in the Dustin Lance Black play, 8, on
Broadway and at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre as Jeff Zarillo
– a plaintiff in the federal case that overturned California’s
Proposition 8.
Matt Bomer was born October 11, 1977 in Spring, Texas, as
the son of Sissi and John Bomer, a former Dallas Cowboys
draft pick.[6] He has two siblings and attended Klein High
School in Spring, Texas, with fellow future actor Lee Pace.
Pace and Bomer both acted at Houston's Alley Theatre, a
non-profit theatre company.
In 2001, Bomer graduated from Carnegie Mellon University
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Fine Arts
degree.
On October 23, 2009, Bomer began starring in White Collar,
which chronicles the partnership between a con artist, Neal
Caffrey (Bomer) and an FBI agent, Peter Burke (played by
Tim DeKay).[10] BuddyTV ranked him #1 on its list of "TV's
Sexiest Men of 2011".
In September 2011, Bomer starred in the Broadway debut
of Dustin Lance Black's play, 8, a staged re-enactment of
the federal trial that overturned California's Proposition
8.[12] In March 2012, he was featured in the Wilshire Ebell
Theatre production as well, portraying Jeff Zarillo, one of the
plaintiffs in the trial.
In October 2011, Bomer appeared in the science fiction
thriller film In Time, in which he played a 105-year-old
man, Henry Hamilton. In 2012, Bomer starred as Ken, a
male stripper, in the feature film Magic Mike. In 2013, he
will appear in Space Station 76, directed by Jack Plotnick.
[15] He has signed to appear in the 2013 adaptation of
Winter's Tale, directed by Akiva Goldsman.
In June 2013, Bomer was ranked at #2 on Logo's Hot 100
list, which is based on the votes of readers of the AfterEllen.com
and TheBacklot.com. Bomer was the list's highest
ranked man, behind only Jennifer Lawrence.

Channing TaTum
Brings
‘Magic Mike’
to Broadway
A musical based on the male stripper film Magic
Mike is due to open on Broadway, the movie’s lead
actor Channing Tatum has confirmed.
Tatum, whose early experience as a male stripper
led to the making of the film, tweeted: “#MagicMikeTheMusical
is headed to Broadway…”
The 2012 film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, follows
the life of 19-year-old Adam who enters the
world of male stripping for the first time, guided by
his mentor ‘Magic Mike’.
Tatum, 33, who plays Magic Mike in the film, will
produce the musical alongside Soderbergh, Reid
Carolin, Gregory Jacobs and Nick Wechsler.
Tomm kitt and Brian Yorkey, creators of the awardwinning
rock musical Next to Normal, have been
signed to write the songs, while Roberto Aguirre-
Sacasa will write the musical’s plot.
The writer has previously penned episodes of Glee
and Big Love, and has also worked on the upcoming
American Psycho musical.
Magic Mike was self-financed by Tatum and Soderbergh
with an estimated budget of $7 million
(£4.5m).
It went on to become a surprise hit at the box office,
making $167 million (£109m) in global sales.
Helps Local Veterans
Cash and Clothes Donated to
Veterans Village of San Diego
More than $2,300 and forty large boxes of clothing were
donated to the Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) as part
of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) community
outreach mission.
“On any given day, more than 500 veterans find a helping
hand at the Veterans Village,” said Marc Mangiantini, SDGMC
Director of Outreach. “We’re proud to be part of the amazing
work they do to improve the lives of the men and women who
served our country.”
Singers and audience members made cash donations into
a giant ruby-red slipper at the recent Feelin’ Groovy—Songs
of the ‘60s summer concert series. And, throughout the
summer, clothing was gathered by SDGMC members and
the University Christian Church (UCC) in Hillcrest where the
chorus holds its rehearsals.
This is the third year SDGMC’s outreach efforts have helped
local groups. Past concert partnerships have benefited
a scholarship program for abused children, a shelter for
homeless and low-income women, a youth arts and music
program and Mama’s Kitchen.
SDGMC has entertained San Diego audiences for nearly
30 years. With more than 150 members, it is one of the
largest choruses of its type in the world. Anyone interested in
joining the chorus may attend Info Night on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
at the UCC located at 3900 Cleveland Avenue. For more
information, go to sdgmc.org or call (877) 296-SONG.
Candi
HELLO, Bon JOUR, Hola, Guten Tag’ Ni hao
Candi Wrappers? Greetings from Sunny San Diego:
NEW SHOPS IN THE GAYBORHOOD:
Next time when you visit Hillcrest San Diego you will have to walk
up and down University Avenue and all around town to see what is
new. We have great restaurants and shops with a few new additions.
Obelisk Bookstore was a staple here in Hillcrest until the fire took
it from us just before Pride of 2011 along with four other business's
and 12 Residential units. It was a loss for us here. However, our
community pulled together and today we welcome back Obelisk
Hillcrest Mercantile located at 1037 University Avenue. There
you can see part of Hillcrest history where the original Hillcrest sign
that hung once over University Avenue and 5th Avenue now hangs
proudly with in Obelisk Mercantile. This is a must stop on your next
visit! If you’re in town, on August 16th at 7pm there is a Grand
Opening Party with champagne & gift bags. Stop in and say hello.
Another new shop is The Rich Life at 502 University Avenue and
5th Avenue where I found many interesting items from candles to
furniture clothing and shoes. And we must not forget the Bling Bling.
It is a small shop with a big selection of many gifts. So if your in the
market for the unusual, The Rich Life is for you. As I head East on
University Avenue just a few doors down at 540 University Avenue
there I found Rred, (www.rredsd.com) an art gallery and wine bar
with a small tapas menu. As you roam the room you will see walls
of art while you enjoy your fine glass of wine. If you’re an HGTV
fan, you will have to pop into ESTABLISH, just two doors West of
Obelisk, which opened its doors on May 1st 2013. There you may
just run into Burnz Fernandez from White Room Challenge. There
you will find many fun decorative items from vintage style to new. As
you shop you can smell the fragrance of fine candles in a bright and
airy shop. Lastly, I must say goodbye to an old establishment here
which I’m sure many of you have eaten at City Deli while here in
Hillcrest at the corner of University Avenue and 6th Avenue. The deli
had over 30 years of service. Now there will be a new sign replacing
the old one which will read Harvey Milk American Dinner. The
first in the nation, it opened this past week and I have been there
already 4 times. I await the new menu and change. I’m sure will be a
wonderful ambiance. This will be a place to meet with old friends and
make new ones.
A NIgHT OF 41 DRESSES:
And now...a Spectacular Auction Event where you will able view and
bid on dresses from the 41 Empresses of the Imperial Court de San
Diego. All proceeds will benefit the programs of the ICSD. Join Her
Most Imperial Majesty The People’s Empress, Candi Samples, on
September 21st, 2013. The Doors will open at 5 pm and the event
will start at 6 pm. Tickets are only $10. HMIM Candi Samples will
bring you entertainment from some exciting local entertainers, a full
No Host-Bar, and of course a runway full of one of a kind gowns and
dresses once worn by Empress of the Imperial Court De San Diego.
Just in time for Halloween! If you have ever wanted to dress like an
Empress or a Queen you must be a part of this fashion show auction
held at the LGBT Community Center of San Diego at 3909 Center
Street. The Imperial Court De San Diego is a California Non-Profit
Organization 501(c)(3). Mistress of Ceremonies will be none other
than Sable La Roux. She will entertain you as well as help introduce
the gowns and dresses as they come down the runway. Don’t forget
your sunglasses as all the beads, stones and sequins may blind you.
Credit cards will be accepted.
Smile You’re on Candi Camera:
Linda Wish and Aaron Duke Mr. & Miss Leather San Diego 2013
Their year is almost up in a week and they have had a very
successful one. Thank you both for all you did this past year, I wish
you both the Best Candi Wishes for the future. I’m sure you will
go on serving your community. I would like to give my best to all
the contestants for Mr. & Miss Leather 2014. May the best Man &
Till next time on the pages of LIVE Magazine:
PALM SPRINGS GAY MEN’S
CHORUS ANNOUNCES
INFO NIGHT/AUDITIONS
FOR THEIR 2013-2014 SEASON
TAYLOR DAYNE HITS: TELL IT TO MY HEART / DON’T RUSH ME / KISSING YOU / IN THE DARKNESS / CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF YOUR LOVE / LOVE WILL LEAD YOU BACK
The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus will hold their Fall Information Night and Auditions on
Tuesday, August 27 at 6 p.m. at Temple Isaiah, 332 W. Alejo Road, Palm Springs, CA 92262.
Sponsored by Big Bear Adventure Weekend and Miller Lite
Singers and non-singers are both welcome and encouraged to attend. The chorus is
always looking for volunteers to help behind the scenes. Men who are interested in
becoming a singing member will sing for the director. You may prepare a song for your
audition but that is not required. If you do, please bring sheet music in the correct key.
An accompanist will be provided. Weekly rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings.
Introducing IN SEASON, a brand new small vocal ensemble that will be auditioned
from the membership of the large chorus in early September. This group will be more
performance-oriented and involve choreography and movement. Perfect for singers
who enjoy choral singing and musical theatre.
For more information please go to www.psgmc.com
Underpinned by serious grooves, SPLASH HOUSE offers a totally unique
musical experience in Palm Springs – think mountain sunsets, palm trees
and jamming poolside to some of the world’s freshest electronic performers
. The multi-venue pool party weekender debuting this weekend, August
10th & 11th at local Palm Springs resort pools, will connect them together
for one event. One GA Wristband gets you access to all three hotels and
the shuttles in between. Coachella Valley residents can get $89 wristbands
by providing their local zip code at checkout. Guests must be 21+. For
more information and to purchase a ticket, visit
