Welcome
Stand by for the best years of your life...
Friendly; the word
that best sums up
Fitzwilliam College,
known throughout
the University for
being welcoming
and unstuffy.
Fitzwilliam looks
for intellectual
achievement and
commitment
among its
members, and seeks
to foster academic
success within a
relaxed and
supportive
atmosphere.
Fitzwilliam is a modern,
friendly college, situated away
from the busy town centre,
helping to create a close
community of nearly 500
undergraduate students and
65 fellows. The College
accepts applications for all
subjects offered by the
University. Students at
Fitzwilliam participate in a
wide range of successful
sports teams as well as
maintaining a vibrant music
society. Although large
in student numbers,
Fitzwilliam is compact.
All College facilities are
provided on-site or at the
nearby College playing
fields.
Location
The College enjoys a large
and peaceful site at the top
of Castle Hill, a short cycle
ride from the town centre
and most of the faculties and
departments. The University's
West Cambridge site has
brought some of the Science
departments, including
Mathematics, Physics and
Computer Science, to our
doorstep, a trend which is set
to continue.
The College was
established on this site in the
1960s, in the grounds of The
Grove, a Regency house
which is part of the College.
Since then, a new building
has been completed each
decade; student accommodation,
the central building
with hall, library, common
room and bar, squash courts,
the chapel, the auditorium
and, most recently, the gatehouse
on Storey's Way. These
are complemented by
beautiful gardens which are
one of Cambridge's best-kept
secrets.
FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE | UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE | 1
Undergraduates are
guaranteed accommodation
in a study-bedroom on the
main College site, or in a
shared house nearby, for
every year of their studies.
Our History
Fitzwilliam has a unique
heritage among the colleges
in extending access to those
who would not otherwise
have been able to study at
Cambridge.
Fitzwilliam House started
life in 1869 as a noncollegiate
institution, to
provide undergraduates
unable to afford membership
of a college with a base from
which to study, a handsome
house opposite the Fitzwilliam
Museum.
Nowadays, the state pays
college fees, allowing every
Cambridge undergraduate to
belong to a college.
Fitzwilliam House received its
royal charter in 1966 and
became Fitzwilliam College.
The College remains true
to its roots. Facilitating access
to Cambridge remains at the
heart of the College’s role
within the modern University.
The proportion of applicants
to Fitzwilliam from
maintained schools remains
significantly higher than to
most colleges and this is
reflected in the composition
of the student body. Students
from all backgrounds settle
happily into the Fitzwilliam
community, but the College is
particularly proud of its
success in making welcome
candidates who thought
Cambridge was elitist and not
for them.
Fitzwilliam College
welcomes applicants
from all
backgrounds, male
and female, home,
EU and overseas. We
do not discriminate
between candidates
on grounds other
than academic
ability.

Coming up to
Fitz each term is
like coming home
– I cannot
imagine a more
friendly and
supportive
atmosphere in
which to pursue
both academic
and extracurricular
interests.
Academic life
Fitzwilliam College admits students to read for all the subjects offered by the University.
Teaching at
Cambridge is
organised by the
University and
colleges in tandem.
The University
provides lectures
and laboratory and
library facilities. It
also sets the
examinations! The
colleges
supplement and
enrich this
university
provision by
organising small
group teaching –
supervisions – for
their own students.
Supervisions are at the heart
of the undergraduate
academic experience, allowing
students to study in small
groups with an expert in the
field. Where that expert is a
Fellow of Fitzwilliam, the
supervisions will often take
place within the College, but
students will also have some
teaching arranged for them
with Fellows of other colleges.
It is the role of the Director
of Studies for each subject to
organise the supervisions. They
also watch over the progress
of the students in their subject
and advise on the choices to
be made within the wide
range of options available in
all Cambridge courses.
The three teaching terms
at Cambridge last for only
eight weeks. Terms are
extremely intensive and
students are expected to cover
a lot of ground within them,
and to use the correspondingly
extended vacations to
consolidate and revise, and to
prepare coursework such as
dissertations or technical
reports. That is why we look
for students who are highlymotivated
to study their
chosen subject.
Arts at Fitzwilliam
Students reading Arts subjects
have relatively few hours of
formal teaching, typically one
College supervision each
week, for which an essay must
be written, plus attending any
seminar classes or lectures
(held in the University
department) as recommended
by the Director of Studies. This
is made up for by hours of
independent study, reading
and writing, for that allimportant
weekly essay. A
long essay or dissertation,
researched and written over
FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE | UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE | 3
more than one term, is often
an additional requirement.
Supervisions are still conducted
one-to-one in some Arts
subjects. The student who is
well-prepared will benefit the
most from this opportunity to
spend an hour each week
discussing their essay, and
much more besides, with an
expert in the field.
The library is the essential
resource for Arts undergraduates.
Each of the
University departments has a
library stocked with the books
and journals required by
undergraduates, co-ordinated
with individual reading-lists.
Fitzwilliam College has its own
library with some 40,000
volumes. The College library
is kept up-to-date with
recommended undergraduate
textbooks and other materials
for all subjects, most of which
can be borrowed, plus
electronic resources. There is
also a separate Law library.
With 24-hour access, the
College library provides an
ideal working environment for
those long revision sessions.
The other essential
resource is access to
computers for essay-writing
and access to the internet.
Fitzwilliam College offers an
undergraduate computer
room (with printer and
photocopier), and all student
rooms have internet and
telephone connections.
Sciences at Fitzwilliam
Students reading Science
subjects can expect to spend
most of their weekdays
attending formal teaching in
their University departments,
in lectures and laboratory
practicals. They also attend
weekly college supervisions,
preparing examples papers in
advance. Demanding the
specialist equipment and
software that only the
University departments can
provide, Science students will
spend more of their time
working there. Nevertheless,
the role of the Director of
Studies and Fellows of the
College is crucial. In
Engineering, for example, all
first and second-year
undergraduates are supervised
‘in-house’ by Fitzwilliam
Fellows. Their regular contact
with the Director of Studies
enables any difficulties
encountered by a student to
be recognised and addressed
at an early stage.

College life has
exceeded all of my
expectations, I
wouldn't want to
be anywhere else.
Social and cultural life
Music is a flourishing aspect of life at Fitzwilliam.
Fitzwilliam students
enjoy good
relations with the
Fellows and College
staff in a friendly
and relaxed
atmosphere. Fellows
and undergraduates
in most subjects get
together socially
from time to time
for a talk by a
visiting speaker, a
dinner or just
drinks and a curry.
University societies and
sporting clubs cater for just
about every conceivable
interest. Fitzwilliam students
are to be found organising
and leading University
societies, and representing the
University in music, dance,
drama, martial arts, sport….
Not forgetting student politics
– a Fitzwilliam graduate has
recently been president of
CUSU.
But College forms the
basis for most student social
life with social events such as
fancy-dress Formal Halls, and
joining in with College
sporting teams and
societies.
Music and drama
At Fitzwilliam, the opportunities
for performing,
practising and enjoying music
are kaleidoscopic; from music
practice rooms to the College
gardens in May Week, from
FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE | UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE | 5
the elegance and intimacy of
the chapel to the state-of-theart
performing space of the
250-seat auditorium. All
musical tastes are catered for,
including rock music and
swing.
The College gave its name
to the renowned Fitzwilliam
String Quartet, who return to
give regular master classes.
The Fitzwilliam Music Society is
especially vibrant and wellsupported.
The Music Society
gives concerts and recitals
throughout the year. Singers
too have plenty of opportunity
to be heard, from the
barbershop group to the
chapel choir, with its energetic
round of chapel services and
touring. The Auditorium
provides not only a large
venue for performances, but
also a suite of music practice
rooms. For more information
see www.fitz.cam.ac.uk/music.
Fitz Theatre, the College
dramatic society, regularly
produces plays in College,
including plays written by
students themselves. Most
years, the music and drama
societies combine to produce
a musical extravaganza, such
as 'Jesus Christ Superstar',
with scope for just about
everyone in the College to
get involved.
Music and drama also
come to the fore when the
Fitzwilliam students host a
December Ball, usually held
every other year. Several
times each year, Fitzwilliam
also organises Entz (largescale
discos) which are the
envy of students from other
colleges. Balls and Entz
alike see the College
decorated and transformed
for a night into a different
and magical place, with
very loud music.
Sport
All levels of sporting commitment
and ability are
represented at Fitzwilliam,
with a large number of sports
represented to third team
level. The best thing is to join
in and have a go. Enthusiastic
spectators are always
welcome too.
Fitzwilliam’s many sports
teams include rowing, rugby,
hockey, football, cricket,
squash, athletics, basketball,
netball, tennis, table tennis,
badminton, swimming and
waterpolo.
Many of our rowers have
never rowed before coming
to Cambridge. Students who
have tried sports for the first
time here have developed a
passion and commitment
which has taken them to the
highest levels of University
sport and will stay with them
long after graduation. Sports
in which Fitzwilliam students
have represented the
University in recent years have
included athletics, badminton,
cricket, cycling, football, golf,
hockey, rowing, rugby, tennis
… and pool.
Fitzwilliam has its own
playing fields and tennis courts
near the College site, and a
boathouse on the Cam. Onsite
there is a recentlyrefurbished
gym and
badminton and squash courts.
At Fitzwilliam, it is
easy to meet other
people who are just
like you…

Fitz combines
the academic
excellence of every
Cambridge college
with unbeatable
opportunities to get
involved and enjoy
every minute.
James Crawford

Undergraduate
students are
guaranteed a
College room,
either on-site or in
one of the nearby
College houses. All
College rooms are
light, warm and
comfortable, and
allow for privacy
and independence.
Many have ensuite
bathrooms or
showers; every
room on-site is
fitted with at least
a washbasin.
First years are allocated single
occupancy rooms in Old
Court. After that, students
may choose their rooms, a
room ballot is organised by
the Junior Members'
Association (the
undergraduate student body).
With around 360-370 on-site
rooms for undergraduates,
only a minority of students
occupy rooms in houses.
Indeed many choose, in their
second year, to join with a
group of friends to enjoy the
sociability and independence
of sharing a college house.
The cost of renting in
College (whether on-site or in
a College house) varies
according to the size of room
and its facilities – a large
room with full en-suite is
naturally more expensive than
a small room with washbasin.
Students on a tighter budget
may forego these luxuries in
order to pay lower rent. Rents
at Fitzwilliam are broadly in
line with those charged by
the other colleges. See
Finance for more information.
All students have access
to small kitchens (gyp rooms)
for self-catering. The rooms in
New Court are grouped
around a well-equipped
kitchen and dining area. But
in practice, not having to
bother cooking and washingup
attracts students to the
Buttery for most meals.
Computers
The college has two student
computer rooms – one for
undergraduates, the other for
graduates. In addition there
are sites with 'cybercafé'
facilities for easy access to
email. All student rooms, on
and off the main college site,
are networked for personal
computers, allowing access to
college and University
networks and via them to the
internet. All student rooms
also have a telephone point.
The Chapel
The chapel is a resource for
the whole college community.
Like most of Fitzwilliam's
buildings, the exterior is
FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE | UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE | 7
Living at Fitz
Students are offered a College room for all three or four years of their
undergraduate career.
simple and austere, but the
interior is light and
welcoming. It is a beautiful
and peaceful place at the
heart of the College site.
Sunday and weekday services
are held, and there are times
when it is reserved for private
prayer. The chapel is
ecumenical, and anyone,
whether they see themself as
a Christian or not, is very
welcome to attend services.
See www.fitz.cam.ac.uk/chapel.
The chapel is also
regularly used for musical
recitals, with a two-manual
Collins organ, a Steinway
grand piano and a
harpsichord.
Other facilities
Other rooms for student use
include the Stretton Room,
with a fully-equipped kitchen
adjoining where students can
entertain on a larger scale
than would be possible in the
gyp rooms, and the Society
Room, where students can
read the newspapers or
access their email. There are
two music practice rooms in
the central building and three
in the auditorium. The
undergraduate common room
(the JMA), next to the bar, is
equipped with a pool table,
table football and cable TV.
There is also a laundrette, so
you don't have to take your
washing home.
Eating
The College hall is where
meals are taken, whether
formal or informal. The use of
a common space by Fellows,
students and staff enhances
the College's spirit of
community. Sharing meals is
at the heart of collegiality.
All meals are available
self-service through the
buttery, adjacent to the hall.
The buttery offers a wide
range of low-cost meals,
always including vegetarian
options, fresh fruit and salads,
and ice creams. Special
dietary needs can be catered
for. Through consultation
with the JMA, Fitzwilliam
aims to provide the food
students want, at the times
they want it. The buttery is
open for breakfast, and stays
open for take-away
sandwiches and snacks all
morning until lunchtime. An
evening meal is available
6-7pm.
Some week nights there is
also a Formal Hall, a formal
three-course dinner, with the
trappings of Cambridge
college tradition (a high table,
grace, gowns, candles,
silverware…). Dining with
college friends and guests at
a Formal Hall is a popular,
relatively cheap way of
marking special occasions.
The shared kitchen
facilities make self-catering
possible and there are
supermarkets within easy
reach of the College. Most
students combine some selfcatering
(cornflakes, toast,
sandwiches…) with buttery
meals.

Fitz is a great
place to learn,
and an even
better place to
make friends. Its
hard to imagine a
nicer place to
spend 3, 4 or
even 5 years!
Finance
Contrary to what many people will tell you, Cambridge is not an expensive place to study.
Colleges provide
reasonably priced,
good-quality
accommodation
and meals. The
short terms reduce
the number of
weeks per year
students need to be
in residence. There
are no costs of
travel since
everything is within
walking or cycling
distance, and a free
bus service links
some of the main
sites, including
Fitzwilliam College.
Cambridge students benefit
from free, or subsidised,
access to educational and
recreational facilities (libraries
of which there are more than
150!, computers, sporting
facilities and theatres)
superior to those available at
almost any other university in
the UK. Additionally, the
University and the colleges
are able to offer awards,
funds, studentships and prizes
to eligible students, for
instance, to help fund
vacation fieldwork, over and
above the University's meanstested
Cambridge Bursary
Scheme.
At Fitzwilliam you do not
have to worry about finding
your own accommodation on
the open market. College
accommodation is guaranteed
throughout your undergraduate
course, and you
only pay for the room when
you are in residence – not for
the whole calendar year.
Fitzwilliam students rent onsite
rooms for only 29 weeks
per year (39 weeks for rooms
in College houses). The rent
covers heating and lighting
too.
At Fitzwilliam, like most
other colleges, students pay a
termly kitchen charge and
then pay for the meals taken.
Room rents, fixed charges
FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE | UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE | 9
and the cost of meals at
Fitzwilliam College are
broadly the same as charged
by other colleges. College
rents for the current academic
year can be found at
www.fitz.cam.ac.uk/about.
The Admissions office will be
pleased to advise you on
current meal and room prices.
College funds
Fitzwilliam cannot pretend to
be one of the wealthier
Cambridge colleges, but we
are keen to use whatever
funds are available to offer
some financial support for
students. Particular funds are
available, for example, to
contribute to the costs of
students' musical and
dramatic activities, attending
conferences, and vacation
travel. Scholarships and prizes
are awarded to students who
attain a First in University
examinations.
Fitzwilliam College, like the
University, is committed to the
principle that no prospective
student should be deterred
from applying to the University
of Cambridge because of
financial considerations, and
that no student should have to
leave because of financial
difficulties. For information
about financial support
available to home
undergraduates, see
www.cam.ac.uk/admissions/
undergraduate/finance.
Tutors are always ready to
advise on what financial
support may be available to
individual students. The
College has funds from which
it can make payments in the
case of financial hardship.
Advice and help is given in
complete confidence.
Student welfare
Starting University is a
daunting experience with
many new challenges, from
making new friends to
managing your finances.
Fitzwilliam offers a network of
support and mentoring for
each undergraduate.
As well as a Director of
Studies monitoring their
academic progress, every
student has a Tutor who is
there to help with issues of
personal welfare, including
financial worries. In addition,
the College Chaplain, the
Applications and admissions
Finding out about
Fitzwilliam
Attending an open day is an
excellent way to find out
about Fitzwilliam. We have
three open days a year, two
in April/May and one in
September. See
www.fitz.cam.ac.uk.admissions
for the next open days.
Attending an open day
allows you to meet the
Director of Studies in the
subject of your choice and
talk to current students.
Potential applicants are also
very welcome to visit the
college at other times, by
arrangement – contact
addresses are on the last
page of this prospectus. We
also welcome applications
from mature students, who
should contact the
Admissions Office for advice
as soon as possible.
Applications
Applications must be made to
Cambridge on a Cambridge
Application Form (CAF) as
well as through UCAS. We
need to receive your
application by 15 October.
Entrance to the College is
based on interview and
Advanced GCE performance.
The standard offer in all
subjects is AAA at Advanced
GCE level (excluding General
Studies and Critical Thinking);
equivalent offers are made for
other qualifications.
Candidates receiving offers to
read Mathematics will also be
required to achieve high
grades in Sixth Term
Examination Papers (STEP),
which are public examinations
administered by UCLES.
On average, there are
three applications per place,
but the number of
applications per subject varies
widely, and unpredictably,
from year to year.
Interviews
All the candidates we see
should be capable of
achieving the high A2-level
grades (or equivalent
qualifications) that we require
in our conditional offers. For
us, therefore, interviews are
by far the most important
means of distinguishing
between highly qualified
applicants who are strongly
supported by their schools or
colleges. So it is very much in
our interest to get the best
out of candidates in these
interviews. Contrary to
popular myth, we do not set
out to make interviewees feel
uncomfortable, or to play
tricks on them. We hope that
some of the following
remarks help you give of your
best in interviews, and
therefore help us too.
You can expect to be
asked testing, thoughtprovoking
questions:
questions whose answers are
not immediately obvious.
Clearly, interviews have to be
challenging. However, those
FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE | UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE | 11
Fitzwilliam welcomes any applicant who has the necessary academic ability and
potential, regardless of background.
who ask you these questions
will be hoping that you will
do well. 'Doing well' does not
mean merely unloading
information or arguments
that you might have learned
in advance.
The questions will be
testing because they will
invite you to speculate, to
think on your feet, to discuss
problems to which there are
often no easy or neat
solutions. We are interested in
your ability to think for
yourself, not in how polished
or well coached your delivery
might be. For this reason, we
will try to put you at your
ease. We know that
candidates are nervous, and
make allowances for this. We
want you to feel confident
enough to express your own
views and talk about your
own interests. The whole
point of interviews is to give
the interviewers a sense of
the individuality and potential
of each student – something
that no exam paper can
reflect.
At Fitzwilliam (and most
colleges follow this pattern),
candidates have two
interviews: a Subject Interview
and a General Interview. Each
lasts about half-an-hour. The
Subject Interview is
conducted by the Director of
Studies who is responsible for
that subject in the College; he
or she is often assisted by one
or two colleagues. These
interviewers are the same
people who will teach you,
and organise your studies, if
you do get a place at
Fitzwilliam. They will be
responsible for you
academically. They have good
reason, therefore, to be
looking for talented,
stimulating, and, perhaps
above all, well motivated
students.
Can I take a gap year?
Yes, we are happy for
applicants to all
subjects to take a gap
year and thereby
apply for deferred
admission.

Fitzwilliam is a
cosy college where
many people are
nice and friendly.
Interviews
Be prepared, be candid, but above all, be yourself.
You cannot predict the
precise questions that you will
be asked, however, give some
thought to the topics about
which you would most like to
be questioned. Interviewers
should give you the chance to
tell them what these topics
might be.
For some subjects there is
an additional exercise: reading
a passage in a foreign
language, answering
questions from a short text,
or some other form of written
test. You will be informed in
advance if such an exercise
features as part of an
interview. If it does, it is
designed as much to be a
stimulus to discussion as a
test of knowledge. Even here,
we are less concerned that
you give the 'right' answer
than we are with your
intellectual curiosity, and your
ability to grapple with
problems whose solution you
have not already been taught.
In the course of an interview,
we will help you think
through these problems. In
Science subjects, it is common
for candidates to be given
problems to solve during the
interviews themselves. In
some Humanities subjects we
ask for sample school essays
to be sent to us before your
interview, and pose questions
and arguments provoked by
these. Here again, we will be
asking you to think laterally,
to recognise conflicting
viewpoints, and to suggest
how intellectual debates can
be resolved.
Your General Interview is
likely to be conducted by a
Fellow of the College who
teaches in a subject different
from, but close to, the one
for which you have applied.
You should not be surprised
then, if in this interview you
are asked academic questions
about your subject, and the
reason for your commitment
to it. At Fitzwilliam, the
General Interview may focus
on some of the interests that
you have described on your
application form (reading,
work experience, travel, plans
for a gap year, for example).
You should not, however,
expect it to be less
demanding than the Subject
Interview. A large part of the
General Interview may well
feel like another Subject
Interview, with technical
questions on your school
studies.
These are only general
guidelines, and you should try
to talk to your prospective
Director of Studies about the
special demands of his or her
subject; a College Open Day
provides the best opportunity
for you to do this. This is
likely to be particularly useful
in the case of subjects that
are not commonly studied at
school, eg Anthropology or
Architecture. We would
expect applicants for subjects
like these to have tried to find
out about them, and to have
done some research or
reading that we can then
discuss at interview. One of
the benefits of attending an
Open Day is to get some
suggestions as to what kind
of preparation might be most
helpful.
Remember, an interview is
not a test of smoothness. You
should not try to present a
fictitious self. Dress smartly,
by all means, but don’t wear
clothes that make you feel
stiff or awkward. We want to
find out about you: your
views, your abilities, your
enthusiasms. Try to think out
loud; let us know what is
going on inside your head!
That way we get to see how
your mind is working. Tell us
what you think, rather than
what you guess we might
want to hear. We will try to
give you the chance to do
this, and actually to enjoy
being interviewed.
Tests
Applicants for some
subjects will be
required to take a
test to further aid the
decision-making
process.
For Engineering,
Economics, Computer
Science and Natural
Sciences (Physical),
this will be a
‘thinking skills test’
based on multiple
choice questions,
organised by the
University.
Candidates for
Medicine and
Veterinary Medicine
will be required to sit
the BMAT, and
candidates for Law
the LNAT. BMAT and
LNAT are organised
nationally.
For school-leaving
qualifications other
than A-levels, the
College, advised by
the Cambridge
Admissions Office,
will make offers
based on grades
equivalent to AAA at
A2-level.
