Fitzwilliam is a modern,
friendly college, situated away
from the busy town centre,
helping to create a close
community of nearly 500
undergraduate students and
65 fellows. The College
accepts applications for all
subjects offered by the
University. Students at
Fitzwilliam participate in a
wide range of successful
sports teams as well as
maintaining a vibrant music
society. Although large
in student numbers,
Fitzwilliam is compact.
All College facilities are
provided on-site or at the
nearby College playing
fields.
Location
The College enjoys a large
and peaceful site at the top
of Castle Hill, a short cycle
ride from the town centre
and most of the faculties and
departments. The University's
West Cambridge site has
brought some of the Science
departments, including
Mathematics, Physics and
Computer Science, to our
doorstep, a trend which is set
to continue.
The College was
established on this site in the
1960s, in the grounds of The
Grove, a Regency house
which is part of the College.
Since then, a new building
has been completed each
decade; student accommodation,
the central building
with hall, library, common
room and bar, squash courts,
the chapel, the auditorium
and, most recently, the gatehouse
on Storey's Way. These
are complemented by
beautiful gardens which are
one of Cambridge's best-kept
secrets.

Undergraduates are
guaranteed accommodation
in a study-bedroom on the
main College site, or in a
shared house nearby, for
every year of their studies.
Our History
Fitzwilliam has a unique
heritage among the colleges
in extending access to those
who would not otherwise
have been able to study at
Cambridge.
Fitzwilliam House started
life in 1869 as a noncollegiate
institution, to
provide undergraduates
unable to afford membership
of a college with a base from
which to study, a handsome
house opposite the Fitzwilliam
Museum.
Nowadays, the state pays
college fees, allowing every
Cambridge undergraduate to
belong to a college.
Fitzwilliam House received its
royal charter in 1966 and
became Fitzwilliam College.
The College remains true
to its roots. Facilitating access
to Cambridge remains at the
heart of the College’s role
within the modern University.
The proportion of applicants
to Fitzwilliam from
maintained schools remains
significantly higher than to
most colleges and this is
reflected in the composition
of the student body. Students
from all backgrounds settle
happily into the Fitzwilliam
community, but the College is
particularly proud of its
success in making welcome
candidates who thought
Cambridge was elitist and not
for them.
