Finance Contrary to what many people will tell you, <strong>Cambridge</strong> is not an expensive place to study. <strong>College</strong>s provide reasonably priced, good-quality accommodation and meals. The short terms reduce the number <strong>of</strong> weeks per year students need to be in residence. There are no costs <strong>of</strong> travel since everything is within walking or cycling distance, and a free bus service links some <strong>of</strong> the main sites, including <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> <strong>College</strong>. <strong>Cambridge</strong> students benefit from free, or subsidised, access to educational and recreational facilities (libraries <strong>of</strong> which there are more than 150!, computers, sporting facilities and theatres) superior to those available at almost any other university in the UK. Additionally, the <strong>University</strong> and the colleges are able to <strong>of</strong>fer awards, funds, studentships and prizes to eligible students, for instance, to help fund vacation fieldwork, over and above the <strong>University</strong>'s meanstested <strong>Cambridge</strong> Bursary Scheme. At <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> you do not have to worry about finding your own accommodation on the open market. <strong>College</strong> accommodation is guaranteed throughout your undergraduate course, and you only pay for the room when you are in residence – not for the whole calendar year. <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> students rent onsite rooms for only 29 weeks per year (39 weeks for rooms in <strong>College</strong> houses). The rent covers heating and lighting too. At <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong>, like most other colleges, students pay a termly kitchen charge and then pay for the meals taken. The Admissions <strong>of</strong>fice will be pleased to advise you on current meal and room prices. <strong>College</strong> funds <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> cannot pretend to be one <strong>of</strong> the wealthier <strong>Cambridge</strong> colleges, but we are keen to use whatever funds are available to <strong>of</strong>fer some financial support for students. Particular funds are available, for example, to contribute to the costs <strong>of</strong> students' musical and dramatic activities, attending conferences, and vacation travel. Scholarships and prizes are awarded to students who attain a First in <strong>University</strong> examinations. <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> <strong>College</strong>, like the <strong>University</strong>, is committed to the principle that no prospective student should be deterred from applying to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> because <strong>of</strong> financial considerations, and that no student should have to leave because <strong>of</strong> financial difficulties. Tutors are always ready to advise on what financial support may be available to individual students. The <strong>College</strong> has funds from which it can make payments in the case <strong>of</strong> financial hardship. Advice and help is given in complete confidence. Student welfare Starting <strong>University</strong> is a daunting experience with many new challenges, from making new friends to managing your finances. <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a network <strong>of</strong> support and mentoring for each undergraduate. As well as a Director <strong>of</strong> Studies monitoring their academic progress, every student has a Tutor who is there to help with issues <strong>of</strong> personal welfare, including financial worries. In addition, the <strong>College</strong> Chaplain, the Adviser for Women Students and the <strong>College</strong> Nurse are available to discuss individual concerns. In most situations – such as the invariable midterm work crisis – it's <strong>College</strong> friends who are the chief comfort. <strong>Fitzwilliam</strong> students are extremely good at supporting each other. At the very start <strong>of</strong> each year second- and thirdyears act as <strong>College</strong> 'mother' or 'father' (sometimes whole <strong>College</strong> ‘families’) to each Fresher, providing reassurance and a friendly face. Freshers Week in <strong>College</strong> sees a varied programme <strong>of</strong> events to set the new students <strong>of</strong>f on the right track with all they need to know to survive <strong>Cambridge</strong>, and plenty <strong>of</strong> new friends.
