Social and cultural life Music is a flourishing aspect of life at Fitzwilliam. Fitzwilliam students enjoy good relations with the Fellows and College staff in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Fellows and undergraduates in most subjects get together socially from time to time for a talk by a visiting speaker, a dinner or just drinks and a curry. University societies and sporting clubs cater for just about every conceivable interest. Fitzwilliam students are to be found organising and leading University societies, and representing the University in music, dance, drama, martial arts, sport…. Not forgetting student politics – a Fitzwilliam graduate has recently been president of CUSU. But College forms the basis for most student social life with social events such as fancy-dress Formal Halls, and joining in with College sporting teams and societies. Music and drama At Fitzwilliam, the opportunities for performing, practising and enjoying music are kaleidoscopic; from music practice rooms to the College gardens in May Week, from FITZWILLIAM COLLEGE | UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE | 5 the elegance and intimacy of the chapel to the state-of-theart performing space of the 250-seat auditorium. All musical tastes are catered for, including rock music and swing. The College gave its name to the renowned Fitzwilliam String Quartet, who return to give regular master classes. The Fitzwilliam Music Society is especially vibrant and wellsupported. The Music Society gives concerts and recitals throughout the year. Singers too have plenty of opportunity to be heard, from the barbershop group to the chapel choir, with its energetic round of chapel services and touring. The Auditorium provides not only a large venue for performances, but also a suite of music practice rooms. For more information see www.fitz.cam.ac.uk/music. Fitz Theatre, the College dramatic society, regularly produces plays in College, including plays written by students themselves. Most years, the music and drama societies combine to produce a musical extravaganza, such as 'Jesus Christ Superstar', with scope for just about everyone in the College to get involved. Music and drama also come to the fore when the Fitzwilliam students host a December Ball, usually held every other year. Several times each year, Fitzwilliam also organises Entz (largescale discos) which are the envy of students from other colleges. Balls and Entz alike see the College decorated and transformed for a night into a different and magical place, with very loud music. Sport All levels of sporting commitment and ability are represented at Fitzwilliam, with a large number of sports represented to third team level. The best thing is to join in and have a go. Enthusiastic spectators are always welcome too. Fitzwilliam’s many sports teams include rowing, rugby, hockey, football, cricket, squash, athletics, basketball, netball, tennis, table tennis, badminton, swimming and waterpolo. Many of our rowers have never rowed before coming to Cambridge. Students who have tried sports for the first time here have developed a passion and commitment which has taken them to the highest levels of University sport and will stay with them long after graduation. Sports in which Fitzwilliam students have represented the University in recent years have included athletics, badminton, cricket, cycling, football, golf, hockey, rowing, rugby, tennis … and pool. Fitzwilliam has its own playing fields and tennis courts near the College site, and a boathouse on the Cam. Onsite there is a recentlyrefurbished gym and badminton and squash courts. At Fitzwilliam, it is easy to meet other people who are just like you…
