Contrary to what many people will tell you, Cambridge is not an expensive place to study.
Colleges provide
reasonably priced,
good-quality
accommodation
and meals. The
short terms reduce
the number of
weeks per year
students need to be
in residence. There
are no costs of
travel since
everything is within
walking or cycling
distance, and a free
bus service links
some of the main
sites, including
Fitzwilliam College.
Cambridge students benefit
from free, or subsidised,
access to educational and
recreational facilities (libraries
of which there are more than
150!, computers, sporting
facilities and theatres)
superior to those available at
almost any other university in
the UK. Additionally, the
University and the colleges
are able to offer awards,
funds, studentships and prizes
to eligible students, for
instance, to help fund
vacation fieldwork, over and
above the University's meanstested
Cambridge Bursary
Scheme.
At Fitzwilliam you do not
have to worry about finding
your own accommodation on
the open market. College
accommodation is guaranteed
throughout your undergraduate
course, and you
only pay for the room when
you are in residence – not for
the whole calendar year.
Fitzwilliam students rent onsite
rooms for only 29 weeks
per year (39 weeks for rooms
in College houses). The rent
covers heating and lighting
too.
At Fitzwilliam, like most
other colleges, students pay a
termly kitchen charge and
then pay for the meals taken.

by other colleges. College

College funds
Fitzwilliam cannot pretend to
be one of the wealthier
Cambridge colleges, but we
are keen to use whatever
funds are available to offer
some financial support for
students. Particular funds are
available, for example, to
contribute to the costs of
students' musical and
dramatic activities, attending
conferences, and vacation
travel. Scholarships and prizes
are awarded to students who
attain a First in University
examinations.
Fitzwilliam College, like the
University, is committed to the
principle that no prospective
student should be deterred
from applying to the University
of Cambridge because of
financial considerations, and
that no student should have to
leave because of financial
difficulties. For information

Tutors are always ready to
advise on what financial
support may be available to
individual students. The
College has funds from which
it can make payments in the
case of financial hardship.

Student welfare
Starting University is a
daunting experience with
many new challenges, from
making new friends to
managing your finances.
Fitzwilliam offers a network of
support and mentoring for
each undergraduate.
As well as a Director of
Studies monitoring their
academic progress, every
student has a Tutor who is
there to help with issues of
personal welfare, including
financial worries. In addition,
the College Chaplain, the
Adviser for Women Students
and the College Nurse are
available to discuss individual
concerns. In most situations –
such as the invariable midterm
work crisis – it's College
friends who are the chief
comfort.
Fitzwilliam students are
extremely good at supporting
each other. At the very start of
each year second- and thirdyears
act as College 'mother'
or 'father' (sometimes whole
College ‘families’) to each
Fresher, providing reassurance
and a friendly face. Freshers
Week in College sees a varied
programme of events to set
the new students off on the
right track with all they need
to know to survive Cambridge,
and plenty of new friends.
