Joe Komora
Performs NYE at Hard Rock Hotel
By Mick Sandoval
Joe Komora is an out actor that stars on the popular on the other hand, is on a slow, slow plane. It takes the right people
to make the right calls to the right people.
series, THE GIRLS GUIDE TO DEPRAVITY, airing now
on Cinemax. Before his TV show, he was a stage How did you land your part on The Girl’s Guide to Depravity?
actor, starring in the Broadway productions of Grease
I got the audition through my agent, went to a producer session -
and Follies.
where the producers, director, and casting team are in a room with
lights, cameras, and audio - and apparently HBO liked me. A few
He brings his theatre chops to Palm Springs on HALF PAGE weeks HORIZONTAL later I got the AD offer.
9.625 X 7.98
How has the film industry changed for out actors?
New Years Eve, performing “Rocking The Gatsby”
at the Hard Rock Hotel. The show is based on the
Baz Luhrman film and embodies all of the glitz and
glamour of the roaring 20s.
Do you remember scoring your first big stage role?
Yes! It was as Riff in West Side Story. We had an amazing cast.
Was the goal always to use the stage as a springboard onto
screen?
Actually, no. I started in the business wanting to be a singer,
studying at the #1 Musical School in the US at the time, Indiana
University. I didn’t see screen acting as a realistic goal.
How did you make the leap from stage to screen?
It was more like a double-dutch hop. My first television role was on
As The World Turns.
How would you compare the NYC acting scene verse the LA
acting scene?
I think it’s easier to get jobs in New York. If you beat the streets and
go to auditions, eventually someone will take a chance on you. L.A.,
Believe it or not, people running Hollywood are still warning actors
not to come out or act too gay. Sadly, the business of making
movies still has to appeal to the ticket/cable-buying public across
America. And, as someone who has traveled to the majority of the
states in this fantastic country, I’m going to say it: most of America
still isn’t ready.
Is that why you’re keeping your toes in stage work?
I love the stage. My rule is to do at least one musical a year. I
assistant choreographed “9 to 5: The Musical” earlier this year and
I’m excited to finish the year off on stage in Palm Springs!
$100 million in post-war contemporary art
Santa Fe, Palm Springs, China and Europe
hundreds of art transactions and millions in
art sales.
Each year, the Palm Springs Fine Art
Fair also honors artists and an arts patron.
PSFAF3 honorees include:
Arts Patron of the Year Award will be
presented to Harold Matzner on Thursday,
Feb. 13, 2014 and benefits the Palm Springs
Art Museum.
2014 Photographer of the Year will
be presented to legendary LA based
photographer Greg Gorman on Friday,
February 14, 2014
2014 Lifetime Achievement Award will be
presented to acclaimed artist Jennifer Bartlett
on Saturday, Feb. 15
HAROLD MATZNER
30 year resident of Palm Springs, Mr. Matzner
exerts selfless leadership as chairman
emeritus and vice chairman of the Palm
Springs International Film Festival, chairman
of McCallum Theatre, and vice president on
the board of trustees at Palm Springs Art
Museum. Matzner takes greatest pride in his
philanthropic efforts for Desert AIDS Project,
Stroke Recovery Center, Temple Isaiah, and
Animal Samaritans. He is also the owner
of the Palm Springs Tennis Club landmark
Spencer’s Restaurant. Past award recipients
have been the beloved Cheech Marin and
Helene Galen.
JENNIFER BARTLETT
Artist Jennifer Bartlett, 73, who hails from
Long Beach, California has been both a
prominent and controversial figure over
the years because her work is filled with
challenging paradoxes and contradictions.
She has been part of the New York artistic
conversation since the late 1960’s. Over
her 50-year career, Bartlett’s work has
transformed in size, technique and subject
matter, which has focused on houses, statues,
and strangely familiar landscapes that invite
the viewer into an elusive narrative. A miniretrospective
of her work in the past halfcentury
will appear near the entrance of the
fair and be curated by imago Galleries. Past
winners have been Judy Chicago and Mel
Ramos.
GREG GORMAN
For over four decades, Greg Gorman has
continued to master the art of photography.
From celebrity portraits and advertising
campaigns to magazine layouts and fine art
work, Greg has developed and showcased
a discriminating and unique style in his
profession. Greg’s work documents that
peculiar obsession of the 21st century
celebrity. Each shot gives a picture of human
nature in its infinite range. Each picture is
also a testament to the individual character.
“For me a photograph is most successful
when it doesn’t answer all the questions,”
says Gorman, “and it leaves something to the
imagination.”
Along with the seven books of his own work,
his images have been seen in national
magazine features and covers, including
Esquire, GQ, Interview, Life, Newsweek, Time
and Vanity Fair. He has also directed music
videos, television advertisements, and graphic
layouts for advertisers.
Tickets are on sales at www.palmspringsfineartfair.com
The VIP Black Card pass provides exclusive
access to the Opening Preview Party. General
admission is $25.
The Palm Springs Fine Art Fair is produced by
the Hamptons Expo Group of Southampton,
New York. They produce 4 other events
throughout the year- ArtHamptons, ArtAspen ,
The Houston Fine Art Fair, and Silicon Valley
THE DESERT ROSE PLAYHOUSE TO PRESENT
“THE MOST FABULOUS STORY EVER TOLD”
Ryan Dominguez
Tim McGiveney as Steve & Phylicia Mason as Cheryl
Jeremy Johnson
Rancho Mirage, CA - The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Valley’s live stage
company serving the LGBT community will present Paul Rudnick’s comedy
The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told. The production will open November 15,
2013 for a five-week run closing on December 22, 2013. Performances are
Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 2 PM.
The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told is the Paul Rudnick’s
re-imagination of the Old Testament – from a gay point of
view. Adam & Steve (played by Ryan Dominguez and Tim
McGivney) and Jane & Mabel (played by Wendy Cohen
and Lorraine Williamson) are the world’s first gay men and
women. Adam’s curiosity causes them to be banished from
the Garden of Eden, so they decide to invent civilization
and start by having brunch.
The foursome befriend the animals on Noah’s Ark (including
a very horny rhino played by Jeremy Johnson), are enslaved
by a Fabulous Egyptian Pharaoh (played by Mark Demry) and
his Amazonian guards (played by Toni Molano and Phylicia
Mason), and meet up again at The Nativity in Bethlehem.
Act Two brings us to present day New York City on
Christmas Eve where one of the lesbians has a miracle
baby. All this is overseen by the Stage Manager (Terry
Huber) who may well be God. The play is an affectionate
and very funny re-visit to classic Bible stories that looks
at love and faith and the The Desert Rose Playhouse is a
project of Desert Rose Productions, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
public benefit corporation. The Most Fabulous Story
Ever Told continues Desert Rose Productions’ mission to
AS ONE with
Aaron Hansen
Youth is wasted on the young – whoever made that statement does not know Aaron Hansen.
Aaron was born and raised in the Coachella Valley. Graffiti had an allure and Aaron was seduced
by its sway. With spray can in hand, Aaron began to make his mark on the local art scene. But
like a fine wine, Aaron matured. His style began to reflect his growing consciousness and social
awareness. Aaron’s work moved from the renegade style of graffiti to that of social commentator.
He soon found himself working around the country as a muralist, sculptor graphic designer all the
while searching for truth.
Aaron sees the world and believes in the goodness of humanity. “ I believe that art can directly
influence the human experience,” said Aaron. “The desert is a gateway to my development as an
artist. I flourish here. I can see the world without the distractions. The desert teems with life and I
see beyond the valley. My art is built on a universal truth – that we are all joined together, as one,
in a collective march towards truth”.
With work stretching from coast to coast, Aaron
remains true to his Coachella Valley roots. “I live in
the desert, so I don’t have everyday city distractions.
I can see as far as the eye can travel and have
all the space I need to flourish and develop as an
artist.” Yet Aaron’s work still shows the impact of
street art. Stencils, lettering and the other elements
of the street movement are blended into psychedelic
color painted on pieces of plywood, sides of buses,
acrylic aliens and giant sunglasses.
By Angela Romeo
Aaron’s individual work is quietly being absorbed
into a newly formed art collective As One. “With a
collective, ‘credit’ is a less of an individual matter.
The more a collective comes together, the great
the result,’ said Aaron. “”The less I do, the more
creative I can be. The statement sounds odd, but
think about it. My individual efforts are a small
part when coupled with the efforts of other artists.
That As One can be a functioning collective, is a
great reflection on us as artists, as members of the
human race; as part of universal truth.”
Searching for truth is a journey undertaken by many
but few follow to conclusion. Aaron’s youth is not
wasted – his is well on his artistic journey for truth.
Perfect Angel
BY MICHAEL TAPIA
Palm springs, CA. Late November, 2013. I wake up and the chill of the
autumn night seeps under my warm comforter. I open my eyes and my
interminable dream finally comes to an end. The magical holographs begin
their cosmic dance. The geometry explodes in brilliant shades of purple.
I slowly get up, my joints creaking like old mattress springs.
“I have to get up and get to the gym,” I say out loud. Convinced, I’m on the
move. A cup of coffee, cereal, and a protein drink under my belt, I call for a
cab. I arrive at World Gym.
I’m greeted by Steve with his sweet southern charm and buzzed in.
“Good morning Michael,” he says.
“Good morning, Steve, how are you?”
I find my landmarks and head for the cardio machines.
Suddenly a woman stops me in my tracks and says, “Oh my God! How do
you get around this gym without eyes?”
I’m surprised by the candidness in her voice.
“It’s really not a big deal,” I respond.
“Were you born blind?”
“No. I lost my eyesight to an infection 18 years ago.
“Wow! I’m so sorry!”
“Please don’t feel sorry for me,” I assert.
“I’m not at all!” she replies. “I lost the use of my left arm to a staph infection
which spread to my spinal column. I had my spinal cord reconstructed with
titanium and donor vertebrae.”
“Wow! You’re a miracle!”
Oh, no! You’re the miracle! You just have to plough through each day and
make it count!”
“Yeah,” I say, “it beats the alternative. We’ll be dead soon enough!”
We laugh and she tells me her name.
“Can I give you a hug?” I ask.
“Sure!” I hug her and feel complete joy and gratitude flood through my body.
She must be an Angel, I think. A Perfect Angel…

D.A.P. treats and supports
the whole person
When D.A.P. opened its dental clinic, I didn’t know it was
one-of-a-kind in the county. I’ve been living with HIV for a
long time, so I was just happy to have people nearby who
really understood my oral care needs. I’ve been a D.A.P.
client since 1994, so I’d already had great experiences
with my doctor, my case manager, and my home health
team. But this dental clinic staff is remarkable —from the
smiling receptionist to my gentle dentist and everyone
else in between. Who knew you could actually LIKE
going to the dentist?!
Hello all you
photos:
JOHN HEDGES
FABULOUS people.
PINKIE’S PLACE
Hello all you FABULOUS people out there. I hope you all had a
Happy Hanukkah and a great Thanksgiving.....Well now it is time
to kick the holiday season into high gear as we have less than a
month until Christmas. Can you believe it? I am so excited about
this Christmas. My mom and dad will be coming to California this
year to share Christmas with Kevin and I. It will be so nice to have
more family around for Christmas. Of course they are hoping for a
white Christmas and with us living on the mountain, there is a very
good chance that we will have a white Christmas. Well I wish you all
THE very best holiday season. Enjoy your friends, your family, your
neighbors and the spirit of the season.
Of course after Christmas is New Years Eve. We would love for you
all to come up to Idyllwild to celebrate New Year’s Eve with us at our
FABULOUS New Years Eve show at the Historic Rustic Theatre in
Idyllwild. You can join Pinkie, Bella, Sassy, Melissa, Marina, Jersey,
Charles and Carol for a fun filled evening. AND so you can drive
back down to Palm Springs for your other parties, our show will be
celebrating the New York New Years at 9:00 PM (or midnight on the
East coast), so our show will be over early enough for you to make
it back to Palm Springs before midnight. For show information and
to purchase tickets go to www.rustictheatre.com or give me a call at
951-392-0641.
Being that it is the time of year for giving thanks, I am so thankful for
my life. I celebrated 15 years of living with HIV this year, WOW....
what a milestone since when i was first diagnosed they told me I
had five years to live. Well look at me now, i’m still alive and kicking.
And I’m thankful for my wonderful Husband, Kevin and our two
dog children, Tiramisu and Hank. Of course we still miss our Caesar
who passed away a little over a year ago. I am so thankful that we
had the opportunity to have him in our lives for the time that we did.
He was and still is such a blessing. We miss him, but know that he
is with us in spirit.
Where will your
next workout be?
ulive.com/5min
Here is a GREAT affirmation that I try my best to practice....I’m not
always successful at my trying, but I do try. “Because the world is
already perfect and orderly, I get to play in the flowing, streaming
chaos of life. I live in the moment, always ready to try new things. I
see a freshly born world every minute of the day!”
Now go out and have the most AMAZING day!
inception, the Toy's for Kid's Program has brought holiday cheer to
thousands of children throughout San Diego County and Mexico.
THE ANNUAL SCOTT CARLSON COMMUNITY DINNER:
The Thanksgiving Community Dinner was started by Aids activist Scott
Carlson back in the early 80's to provide a communal gathering for people
living with HIV/AIDS during Thanksgiving to share a meal and spend time
with people who cared. When Scott passed away, the community banned
together and continued this tradition In 2004 The Imperial Court along with
the First Unitarian Unitarian Church, took over the lead role of securing the
continuation of this wonderful tradition and named the event as the Scott
Carlson Thanksgiving Community Dinner in his honor the late co-founder
who was also the founder of Being Alive
This event was supported by so many wonderful businesses within our
community such as The Harvey Milks American Dinner, Osiris Shoes, ICSD,
Walgreens and many others. 2013 marked the 25th Annual Scott Carlson
Thanksgiving Dinner, which was held at the LGBT Center. The event has
grown not just to the HIV/AIDS community but our Homeless.
BLANKETS OF LOVE:
The annual Winter Blanket Drive was started many years ago after a new
report that many deaths among young children and elderly people in Tijuana
were directly attributed to the cold winter months. Currently the blanket
drive also distributes and donated blankets not only in Mexico but also to
the homeless here in San Diego.
As we sit at home in are warm cozy blankets on the couch others are
shivering with cold what can we do you ask well BLANKETS OF LOVE is here,
to learn more about how you can help please visit
http://www.imperialcourtsandiego.com/ and look for Blankets of love.
I’m asking my readers of Candi Gram and LIVE Magazine in all 4 City’s to help
out in this Cause your small donation today will help keep someone warm
Till we meet again on the pages of
