“I Do! I Do!” is an award-winning musical with lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, based on the 

Jan de Hartog play, “The Fourposter”. The two-character story spans fifty years, from 1895 to 1945, as it focuses 

on the ups and downs experienced by Agnes and Michael Snow throughout their marriage. 

Joyce has guest starred in numerous television programs and is perhaps 

best known as the wife of “Murray Slaughter” on “The Mary Tyler Moore 

Show”. She has been described as “naturally funny”, appearing in the 

movie “Airplane!”, and as David Spade’s mother on “Just Shoot Me!” in 

addition to being a guest panelist on numerous game shows. 

Joyce has for many years been actively involved in raising funds for 

numerous child abuse charities. She and husband Roger founded The 

River Bridge in Colorado for abused children. Joyce is also the executive 

vice president of The Dyslexia Foundation. 

Roger is an American film and television actor whose career began in the 

late 1950s. He has appeared on numerous American television series 

from the 1950s through the 1980s. One of his best known roles was that 

of “Captain John Christopher” in NBC’s “Star Trek” episode “Tomorrow Is 

Yesterday”. 

Proceeds will benefit the CSUSB University Center for Developmental Disabilities 

and the planned expansion of the Center to the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus.

entertain audiences on Friday, Jan. 17, in “I Do! I Do!” at the Indian Wells

CSUSB autism program.

Illuminated Modern Sunset Bus Tour, Nightly February 13 – 23, 2014 

Now in its third year, Illuminated Modern is a free nightly exhibition along 

Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs highlighting a number of significant 

mid-century and modern building facades. The buildings will be illuminated 

with a variety of specialty lighting styles and artistic colors projected onto 

the buildings revealing the name of the architect and year of construction. 

For a special experience, hop aboard the Double Decker Tour Bus for a 

special Illuminated Modern Tour after dark! The guided tour runs only three 

nights during Modernism Week, February 17-19 and tickets are $35. 

Dinner Shows at the Purple Room, Nightly February 14 – 23, 2014 

A visual artist living in Palm Springs California since 

1999, David’s focus in watercolor, pen and ink and 

illustration has expanded to include ceramic sculpture. 

He has no formal training as a visual artist, but found it 

a sanctuary after pursuit of a career as an actor in the 

1980’s. 

His painting career began in the Pacific Northwest 

with gallery exhibits of watercolor paintings in Seattle 

WA., Portland OR., San Francisco, CA., and, Boise, ID. 

from 1983-1999. He paints and sculpts from memory 

and imagination. “It is a map of revelations for me on a 

personal level.”, says David. 

He has been working at Silica Ceramic Studio since 

summer of 2007, hand building pots, boxes, swimmers, 

dog vessels and elemental busts. “I have the joy of 

friendship and collaboration with Diane Graves of DIDA. 

Since 1987 I have designed illustrations for her line of 

copper ornaments and lamps as well as her paper lamps

His work has been jury selected for Ace Exhibitions at Palm Springs Art Museum 

in 2010 through 2013, and the Palm Springs City Art Commission shows 2005 

through 2012, receiving various awards in watercolor painting as well as sculpture. 

David coordinates exhibitions of local artists’ work for the Streetbar Artwall 

Project. Beginning in 2003,he had the opportunity to curate monthly shows, with 

the artists donating 20% of sales to the AIDS Assistance program, Palm Springs 

Animal Shelter and The Center for the LGBT Community of Palm Springs and 

other charities of the artists choice as well.

The Passion Of Latin America comes to Uptown 

Jorge Mendez 

Art is many things –it can be the gateway to a culture, a time gone by or future yet imagined. 

Jorge Mendez brought Latin America to Palm Canyon. His gallery, Jorge Mendez Contemporary 

Latin Art brings us a bold, dynamic collection of Latin American Artists. By doing so 

he has raised the bar of the burgeoning gallery scene in Palm Springs Uptown district. 

Jorge Mendez has lived in several Latin American countries and has absorbed the richness 

of the peoples. He discovered the eclectic nature of art at a young age –his grandfather 

instilled in him a love of the nuances of form and color. Jorge eventually settled in Miami, an 

area bursting with Cuban and Columbian art influence. These forces assailed Jorge and his 

passion for art grew. 

Art was pushed aside as Jorge earned a degree in Finance at the University of Maryland. 

Fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, Jorge worked with various law firms through his 

beloved Latin America. He continued to collect art and amassed a collection of Latin American 

Art. His passion is now his vocation.

Jorge and his partner moved to Palm Springs. Jorge seized the opportunity to open his 

gallery. “”Some of the most interesting art in the world today is coming out of Latin America” 

Jorge stated. “It is my desire to bring this unique interpretation of art, infused with Latin 

cultures to the United States.” 

It is a huge undertaking as Jorge has noted. For many in the U.S., Latin America is a land 

of drug cartels and Cuban boat refugees. But it is so more than the news sound bites. Latin 

America is 7 million miles of land – from South America to the Caribbean, Mexico, Central 

America to the West Indies. It is an area of 20 countries and ancient civilizations. It is this richness 

that attracts Jorge and it from these deep cultural roots that his artists draw their strength. 

Jorge Mendez Gallery represents twelve artists, many whose work is new to this area. It is hard 

to resist the richness of the gallery. Artist Antonio Guerrero, born 1968 in Cuba, is the founder 

of The Cuban Art Project. The richness of color reveals his passion for life and for, as Guerrero, 

is quoted, the “cosmic stage of human activity.” RED TORINO embodies that philosophy. 

Jorge represents Claudia Mazzucchelli. Born in Buenos Aires, Claudia’s work is based on her 

concept of “immobility/perfection”. Her female characters, possess the enigmatic smile of the 

MONA LISA but her women are rebellious and sensual, perfection be dammed is their credo. 

Jorge Mendez recognizes that art has many paths and many flavors. By bringing this Gallery to 

Uptown District of Palm Springs he has created more than a bridge of culture, Jorge has shown that 

Uptown is an artistic destination for collectors and that we are ready to embrace Art in all its forms.

Early January, 2014, Palm Springs, CA. 

My dear friend Jimmy has come in for the 

Palm Springs Film Festival and has invited 

me to brunch. I suggest Oscar’s on the 

patio. We arrive and are delighted to hear 

live music. 

After being seated by a very friendly host, a very nice waitress takes our 

order. 

“Wow! He’s got amazing lungs for the sax,” I say enthusiastically. 

“Yeah, he’s very good!” Jimmy agrees. 

We’re seated between two outdoor heaters. The air is still a little crisp. The 

sun feels warm over our heads. The sax seems to waft in the air with the 

fountain in the background. 

“So, have you enjoyed the films so far, Jimmy? 

“Yes, Michael, the one I saw last night was called The Rocket and it was very 

moving. Are you going to any films?” 

“No, not this time around. I prefer to have descriptive video services so I can 

keep up.” 

“What’s descriptive video?” 

“I can put on a headset in a theatre and the action is simultaneously described 

through pauses in the dialogue. Subtle movements and facial descriptions 

also come up sometimes.” 

“That’s amazing, Michael!” 

Michael Bolivar plays sax on Saurday Brunch at Oscar’s 

“Yeah, the Regal Stadium has two theatres with that service. It makes 

experiencing Star Trek much more exciting. I still enjoy using my imagination 

when I can.” 

We both laugh. We’re pleasantly surprised to hear the sax player begin to 

sing. 

“He’s got a great voice,” Jimmy says and begins to sing along with him. 

So do you, Jimmy,” I say proudly! We eat our Brunch and agree the food is 

tasty. Our waitress refills our coffee and is very courteous. 

“We’ll definitely come back again,” Jimmy says. 

“Absolutely!” I sit back and take in the sun’s warmth as Jimmy sings along.

NEW YEAR, NEW EXHIBIT! BIRDS OF THE 

AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK 

FLY INTO THE LIVING DESERT 

Let More than 300 Colorful Aussie Birds Chirp Their Way into Your Heart 

PALM DESERT/INDIAN WELLS, CA- Animal enthusiasts will have a chance to interact 

with hundreds of Australian birds in the Birds of the Australian Outback exhibit 

which just opened at The Living Desert. The exhibit is sponsored by the City 

of Palm Desert and presented by Dal Weber and Kelly Carmien. 

Zoo-goers get to do more than observe this special Aussie adventure. 

Guests are able to roam a self-contained free flight aviary specially 

constructed for the exhibit, and feed the colorful, chirping birds with seed 

sticks. The birds are “budgies,” a type of parakeet weighing about an ounce 

each, and feathered with shades of blue, green, white and yellow. 

“This exhibit is a blast!” says Stacey Johnson, President & CEO of The 

Living Desert. “The budgies are very friendly and they’re active nibblers. 

They charm kids of all ages who discover how much fun it is to hand feed 

the colorful, friendly birds.” 

More than 300 of the personable Aussie birds fly, chirp, swoop, and feast on 

the seed sticks offered by visitors inside the aviary. It’s a great opportunity 

for guests to get up close and have direct interaction with the colorful birds. 

Entrance into the Birds of the Australian Outback, with one feed stick, is $2 

for non-members and $1 for members of The Living Desert. The entry cost 

includes one seed stick. Additional feed sticks will be available for purchase. 

The exhibit will be open during regular park hours through April 2014.

We are right in the midst of the Palm Springs International Film Festival. 

It is great to see that so many of our readers are going out to support 

our local festival. Kevin and I had the privilege of working at the Black 

Tie Gala on January 4th. We were stationed at the front lobby doors on 

the Red Carpet where all the celebrities arrive. We were honored to get 

to see so many of our favorite stars. 

And not to be outdone, Idyllwild has it’s very own film festival that is 

going from January 7th through January 11th and I will be one of the 

volunteers for that festival as well. So if you get a chance, before it is 

over, take a drive up the mountain. 

As we begin this new year I did a little research on how stress affects 

our bodies. This is very important to those of us living with HIV/AIDS 

to remember. Stress, fear, tension, and anxiety keep our bodies busy 

producing all kinds of hormones. When we are stressed out, all our 

endocrine glands go to work except our thymus gland, home base for 

our immune system and major T cell producer. It shuts down. In fact, 

our entire immune system shuts down when we’re upset. Worry, anger, 

dread, resentment, all contribute to a weaker defense system. 

The good news is that a bright attitude, thoughts of love, security, 

safety, healing, sunshine and feelings of joy and relaxaiton all contribute 

to a strengthened immune system. We have the power to choose which 

thoughts to hang on to and which thoughts to let go. When negative 

thoughts appear, we can let them pass like clouds across the sky and 

replace them with positive images that make us smile. 

Here is a daily affirmation for you: “My mind and my body are beautifully 

connected. I choose thoughts and experience feelings that strengthen 

my wonderful immune system. I love my body. I love my mind.” 

Now go out and have the most wonderful day, week, month and year.

You’ve been able to take on roles that are very 

different, while retaining a sense of control and

COOPER: “Well if that’s how it appears from the 

outside, I’m happy! The truth is I’m always looking to 

push myself and go after new challengers. I’m always 

on the edge of the comfort zone. It doesn’t sound 

a very nice existence but that’s the way I like it. It 

means I’ll never be complacent; it means I’m always 

confronting my fears. That becomes kind of fun, too.”

challenge with the very demanding physical schedule 

of what you do, it must be nice to take a break. 

COOPER: “I think everyone knows it’s an exhausting 

industry, but let’s not pretend there’s not a lot of fun to 

be had as well. That’s what keeps actors coming back 

again and again – it’s about having great experiences 

and giving audiences memorable things to watch. 

“You do have to stay in control of it all though, 

because it can damage you if you don’t.” 

LIVE MAGAZINE: Speaking of that, you’ve 

spoken in the past about your wild side. Is that 

now gone? 

COOPER: “Yes, definitely. I could see things 

slipping and I was becoming someone I guess I didn’t 

recognize. I’m lucky I had a few moments of clarity 

where I could make some real decisions about what 

I was going to do with my life. A big art of that was 

giving up alcohol. It was a real turning point.” 

LIVE MAGAZINE: Oscar season is on its way – 

you must be excited. 

COOPER: “Always! Of course, I’d love to think we 

could have a chance, and I’ve done a couple of films 

in 2013 that have been really well received, but really 

it’s a celebration of the industry and the people. 

There’s no jealousy or bitterness. There are so many 

people who work really hard, and deserve all the 

credit they receive.” 

LIVE MAGAZINE: So you must be a happy man 

right now? 

COOPER: “I am. Things have gone really well over 

the last few years and, like I said, I’ve been very lucky 

along the way. 

I don’t tend to look back too much, but I guess one 

day I will and will give myself a pat on the back. In the 

meantime, for me it’s about working towards the next 

project.”

Bradley Cooper was born in Philadephia, Pennsylvania, the son of Gloria (Campano) and Charlie 

Cooper, who was a stockbroker. He has a sister, Holly. Immediately after Bradley graduated from 

the Honors English program at Georgetown University in 1997, he moved to New York City to enroll 

in the Masters of Fine Arts program at the Actors Studio Drama School at New School University. 

There, he developed his stage work, culminating with his thesis performance as “John Merrick” in 

Bernard Pomerance’s “The Elephant Man”, performed in New York’s Circle in the Square. While still 

in school, Bradley began his professional career, appearing opposite Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex 

and the City (1998) and in the series, The Beat (2000). His weekends were spent with LEAP (Learning 

through the Expanded Arts Program), a non-profit organization that teaches acting and movement 

to inner city school children. The summers took him all across the globe, from kayaking in British 

Columbia with Orca Whales to ice-climbing in the Peruvian Andes, while hosting Lonely Planet’s 

Treks in a Wild World (2000) for the Discovery Channel. Bradley had to skip his graduation ceremony 

from the Actor’s Studio in order to star in his first feature film, Wet Hot American Summer (2001). 

After finishing his second feature, Bending All the Rules (2002), his plans to relocate to Los Angeles 

were delayed when Darren Star hired him to star in the series The $treet (2000). Bradley went on to 

win the role of young law student “Gordon Pinella” in the film Changing Lanes (2002), starring Ben 

Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson, and also stars as “Travis Paterson” in My Little Eye (2002). He finally 

decided that it was time to forgo his other New York projects and move to Los Angeles when he was

The Secret of 2014 

The secret to making 2014 better than any previous year is 

easy: do something different. 

Don’t do just anything different, of course. 

Be smart about your conscious change. 

Here are three steps to help you make 2014 awesome:

1. Declare a Specific New Intention 

Intentions engage your body-mind-spirit and also alert the Universe to your 

desire. State a new intention, or a revised old one; one that inspires and 

delights you, but one that is also doable in baby steps. In other words, “I 

intend to earn a million dollars in 2014″ might be too big a jump. It might 

engage limiting beliefs. But a goal such as, “I intend to attract 5% more 

income each month” may be more believable and doable to you. The idea 

is for the intention to be within reach while still a stretch; something you can 

get to with daily steps. I also think your intention should be inspired, meaning 

it feels like a directive from the Divine and not an indulgence of your 

ego. Again, your past intentions/goals/resolutions may have been too big, or 

not connected to your core passion. Reassess and restate. Today’s the day. 

2. Take Daily Baby 

Step Actions 

The Law of Attraction requires action. 

Do daily steps toward the intention. Often 

people set such big goals that they 

don’t know where to start, so they get 

overwhelmed and don’t do anything. 

It’s far wiser to break down the intent 

into little things you can do every day. 

You may not be able to make 100 cold 

calls all at once, but you can make 2 or 

3 a day. You may not be able to release 

excess weight in one week, but you 

can do something daily to move in that 

direction, such as walking, drinking

more water, etc. You may not be able to write a book in a day or a week, 

but you can write a little every day, and in time you will see a book. The 

point is by doing something every day, you will move to your goal. This is a

Get allies. You’ll have far greater success in 2014 if you surround yourself 

with people who believe in you, and cut ties with the critics and naysayers 

who don’t. Having your own Miracles Coach is the number one thing you 

can do to make the new year a true stand-out for you. The right coach can 

keep you accountable, motivated, inspired and informed. One of the reasons 

for my successes in so many areas, including most recently in music, 

is having a support team. I always have a coach to help me “get clear” of 

any limiting beliefs within myself. The more I clear out the internal blocks, 

the faster I tend to achieve and attract my goals. This is the secret to greatness: 

get a coach. 

Obviously, there are lots of things we could talk about to help make 2014 a 

record breaker for you, but the above three steps are the keys to change.

The Human Rights Watch Film Festival will come to San Diego 

for its fourth year, with screenings scheduled at the Museum of 

Photographic Arts (MOPA) from January 23 through January 

27, 2014. The Human Rights Watch Film Festival highlights the 

power of film to make a difference.

Single screening tickets for the 2014 Human Rights Watch Film

Garrett’s trademark voice has been heard in over 

20 animated features, including the contemporary 

classics CASPER, FINDING NEMO, RATATOUILLE
