LIVE MAGAZINE: You have starred in so many films. Is there a favorite scene
that you just can’t get out of your mind?
COCO: So many films? That’s a bit of a stretch! “A few” is more like it! However,
there are two scenes that have stuck with me. Of course, my bathroom scene in
TRICK will always stay with me. I remember the scene was being filmed in one
long take and a fly had gotten on set and decided it was going to steal the scene
and this camera-whore of a fly kept flying, not just around QUARTER the set, PAGE but literally AD in my
face! Ever since then I really hate flies and I own several 5.1042 flyswatters. X 8.0748 I’m not kidding!
I also remember a scene we filmed for Girls Will Be Girls where I am having
a nightmare about my aborted baby, and to create an umbilical cord a real pig’s
intestine was used. Let it known that Varla Jean Merman got to lay down with a hot
guy in his underwear between her legs while I got to lay down with a pig’s intestine
between mine! Poor Coco! Oh, the things we do for our craft… and a laugh.
LIVE MAGAZINE: You do a lot of work for the community at large. Recently you
were one of the speakers at the GLAAD Awards (along with LIVE Magazine Cover
Celebrities, Craig Ramsay and Brandon Liberati), what was that night like?
COCO: I love Brandon and Craig! I remember meeting them at that event and I
was in awe of what a handsome couple they are and then as we started talking I
realized that these were two guys who, like me, care about the community and our
future. We have stayed friends and in touch since that event, which in this town is
no small miracle. By the way, this past summer Brandon even came to my home
and cut my mother’s hair. My mother felt like a star and I will forever be grateful to
Brandon for that!
LIVE MAGAZINE: So Coco, one of your latest projects is Girls Will Be Girls 2.
What is that all about?
COCO: We filmed it so long ago, I can’t remember! It has something to do with
the end of the world… which is probably when it will be released. I know my friend,
Richard Day, the writer and director, is still working on it and I’m hoping that he’ll finally
release it this year or early next year. In the meantime, I continue to travel the
globe doing my one-person shows and embracing both my inner Sandy and Rizzo
while also trying to ease gracefully into my Miss Lynch/Principal McGee years. I
think I’m doing okay.
LIVE MAGAZINE: Thank you so very much Coco for your time. Palm Springs is
willing and ready! xoxo
To Everything there is a Purpose
The Repurposed Art of
Christopher James
By Angela Romeo
Repurposed material for repurposed art is a broad concept. In the hands of a few,
the word repurposed loses all meaning. That is the case of Christopher James.
When meeting Christopher, one is struck by his warm handshake and soulful eyes. He is softspoken
– one leans in to hear him speak. Tall and lean he looks like he walked away from a
movie set. Like Bruce Wayne into Batman, a welder’s helmet on his head and torch in his hand,
Christopher transforms into the Artist. Soon one is caught up into the world of Christopher James.
Christopher lives in Morongo Valley. As he looked around, he saw metal. Abandoned cars, metal
debris, and metal everywhere doing little to enhance the beauty of the desert and even less for
the environment. Within that chaos Christopher sees hedgehogs and griffins, giraffes and dragons,
bears and flowers – in short he sees life. The twisted debris takes form in Chris’s hands. Life,
sentient creatures, begins to evolve. In short, Chris gives birth to a world of realistic fantasy.
This self-taught artist was born in Florida. Christopher’s childhood was spent traveling the country.
Exposure to the diversity of people, landscapes and animals, fueled Chris’ imagination. His innate
talent, personal freedom and soulful nature, allowed Christopher to infuse rusted metal with engaging
personalities. His works all have eyes that stare back at the viewer. The eyes follow and engage – the
eyes bring the creation from metal to life. The eyes of his creations truly become the windows to their
souls.
Christopher also creates work that expresses his worldview from the celestial to the iconic, with a
myriad of moods and moments depicted between.
“I see beauty from rumble; life from the inanimate. I see a world that can be from the debris left
behind by this world” said Christopher. “I see opportunity with every welding rod and abandoned
car fender. I know that we are here to do something more than destroy the earth – I am hoping
that my work inspires others to think about the environment. What we leave behind is our legacy,
good or bad, to the next generation.”
“I did not start out to be an advocate for the environment, and I don’t consider myself an environmentalist,
” continued Chris. “My work was borne out of the materials around me. I began to see
the discard as needless waste and the discard as art. By giving it a second life, I give life to my
work; I leave a piece of the earth less polluted for my children and grandchildren. I also bring joy,
promise and hope. Art speaks louder than I ever could.”
Christopher is a part of the emerging Coachella art scene. The desert is his home and inspiration.
His work has been shown locally but Christopher’s work is gaining recognition out side the area.
He recently exhibited at Gabba Gallery in Los Angeles. He has done commissions for collectors.
He created protypes for Sci-Fi Channel. Christopher can be found at http://facebook.com/christopher.james.metal
and Creare Gallery.
Seven Days
Murray, who was a finalist on “America’s Got Talent,” dazzled the
a 450 pound tiger, and vanishing an entire 1918 steam locomotive in
mere seconds. Celebrity judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne, and
Howie Mandel all gave Murray standing ovations.
Since then Murray has exploded onto the entertainment scene, guest
starring on the History Channel’s #1 rated series “Pawn Stars” as a
magic expert, and co-starring on a VH1-TV series called “Celebracadabra”
which paired magicians and celebrities in a competition
for $100,000 and the title of Best Celebrity Magician. He has also
appeared on the comedy TV series “Reno 911” and NBC-TV’s “Last
Comic Standing,” TLC’s “4 Houses,” “What Not To Wear,” “Let’s Make a
SOUND
BATH
By Michael Tapia
Mid-January, Palm springs, CA. Ryan,
Jimmy, and I are having a light meal at
a local restaurant before attending the
sound Bath tonight which is sponsored by
our local chapter of The California Men’s
Gathering.
“So Michael, what is the intent of this Sound Bath?” Jimmy asks.
“Yeah, I’m curious too,” Ryan adds.
Feeling a little on the hot seat I do my best with an answer.
“Well, Ryan, you know the keys on your piano?”
“Yes.”
“It’s my understanding that each chakra has a corresponding frequency or
key. The first chakra or root chakra is in the key of C, second chakra in D,
third in E and fourth in F. Then it changes to the fifth chakra in B, sixth in
G, and finally Crown or seventh chakra in A. They’ll be playing the Singing
Crystal Bowls to bring balance to all the chakras.”
“That’s fascinating,” Jimmy says. I think we need to get going so we’re not
late,” he adds.
We arrive at our destination and there’s a line of several men waiting.
Ryan gives me my yoga matt, blanket and pillow and says, ”I feel like we’re
going to a slumber party!”
We all laugh and find that someone has opened the door to the event.
Ryan guides me to an area near the bowls.
“The bowls are in a circle. There are three men sitting back to back within
the circle,” he explains.
We lie on our backs, our heads facing the Singing Bowls.
Qlint, Mark, and several men who will be performing the meditation are
introduced.
We begin to breathe and relax when I hear the grounding drone of the singing
bowl in the key of F, the heart chakra. The other bowls, representing 6
other chakras, chime in and I’m lulled into a blissful state.
(continued in next issue)

I’m smiling more than ever.
When D.A.P. opened its dental clinic, I didn’t know it was
one-of-a-kind in the county. I’ve been living with HIV for a
long time, so I was just happy to have people nearby who
really understood my oral care needs. I’ve been a D.A.P.
client since 1994, so I’d already had great experiences
with my doctor, my case manager, and my home health
else in between. Who knew you could actually LIKE
February already? Time does
and each and every day!
Start making your plans NOW for the sure to be sold out Le Originales
show benefiting Aids Assistance Program. The show will take place
at The Renaissance on March 30th, at 7:00 pm. The cast of the show
is sure to be fun and over the top with Ginger Allen, Richard Barbaro,
Cherlyn, Sassy Ross, Jersey Shore, Rita Del Taco and yours truly Pinkie
Meringue Shimmer. With this line up it is sure to be a sell out and an
outstanding performance and sure to make lots of money for one of my
favorite AIDS charities, AIDS Assistance Program. Thank you team for
inviting me to participate. As many of you know I am continuing to walk
my journey with HIV, fifth-teen and a half years now. And to think when
I was first diagnosed they only gave me 5 years to live. Well I showed
them didn’t I. I continue to work with my doctors to help get my HIV
under control and keep it there. I don’t plan on leaving this earth any
time soon, BUT none of us are guaranteed tomorrow so we must live in
the present, it is OK to dream about the future but today is all we have
for sure. So this show is there to entertain you, but the big and main
reason for this show is to help raise awareness and help raise LOTS of
money for AAP so they can keep doing the wonderful work that they do
on a day to day basis. So please contact me if you have any questions
about tickets or the show, contact me at PINKIEMERINGUE@YAHOO.
We hear a lot about how important forgiveness is to spiritual growth
and healing. But old emotions don’t go away on their own. They get
lodged in our bodies and need to be released. Having intent to forgive
brings us to a safe place where we can dislodge resentment and not
hurt people.
Intent to reach forgiveness gives us time. It lets us enter a process of
releasing rage or hurt or grief and becoming more and more forgiving.
Intent to reach forgiveness helps us honestly deal with emotions. We
don’t have to deny anger just because we think we should be further
along spiritually.
Intent to forgive is self-acceptance. It means we stop judging ourselves.
It means releasing more and more old emotions, opening more
space in our hearts. Space that can be filled with love and light and
true forgiveness.
Here is something that can help remind you daily. “I accept myself just
the way I am. I allow all old emotions to surface. I have intent to forgive.
I have intent to heal.”
NOW please go out and have the most splendid day! Live each moment
to the fullest and learn to appreciate the people around you. In a
blink of an eye they could be gone, so enjoy them now!
Come enjoy the fun,
under the sun, on the misted patio under
umbrellas, or chill inside!
once all-white opera school, both the struggle and the promise are
embodied in an enormously talented group of classical singers from
the black townships.
When the opera school opened its doors to black students after
apartheid, faculty members were awed by the wave of gifted singers
that poured in. Many learned opera in competitive community choirs
in the townships, while others heard it only on TV. Today, the school
is two-thirds black and mixed race, and is achieving greater success
than ever in propelling graduates to the world opera stage. Recent
alumni are now achieving great acclaim at venues such as The
Metropolitan Opera in New York City, and La Scala in Milan, Italy.
Ndiphilela Ukucula: I Live to Sing (half of the title is in Xhosa, the
native language of many of the students) is a documentary and
performance film following three of the opera school’s top students
through a year in the program. Cohen & her team travel with the
students from their townships, where they’ve faced financial hardship
(and, in some cases, health struggles) to Cape Town, where they
perform in the city’s Opera Hall (once a flash point in the antiapartheid
movement), and to New York, where they sing at the
prestigious Glimmerglass Festival. Along the way, they confront many
obstacles -- from racial politics to tuberculosis and illness, to family
fears that opera is not a suitable career.
Following the screening of I Live To Sing, director Julie Cohen
will introduce the three stars of the film - Linda Nteleza, Thesele
Kemane, and Makudupanyane Senaoana, who will give a live musical
performance on the grand stage of the 539-seat Camelot Theatres.
Palm Springs Cultural Center. For more information, visit http://www.
STARS IN MUSICAL THEATRE UNIVERSITY’S
HAIRSPRAY JANUARY 31 – FEBRUARY 2
(rancho mirage) emmy winning actor/comedian Bruce vilanch joins several
Broadway veterans and the students of musical theatre university in their very
first fully-staged musical production, hairspraY, which will be presented for
three performances, January 31 through february 2, at the helene galen
performing arts center at rancho mirage high school. vilanch will reprise his
critically acclaimed turn as edna turnblad in the tony award winning musical,
based on the cult film by John Waters, alongside Broadway actors sal mistretta,
Lisa robinson and gwen stewart, and featuring the talented, young musical
theatre university students.
musical theatre university (mtu) is a comprehensive, pre-professional, afterschool
performing arts conservatory designed for young performers, grades 8-12
selected by audition from throughout the coachella valley, who have aspirations
for careers in professional theatre. mtu is a partnership between the american
foundation for arts education and the palm springs unified school District and
the students are provided with this advanced instruction free of charge so that
no young person is ever denied an education based on ability to pay. in addition
to their classroom instruction, students have the opportunity to perform in four
professionally staged productions each season, working alongside both industry
professionals and local professionals, to give then the opportunity to practice
their craft in a “real world” theatrical environment. musical theatre university is in
residence on the rancho mirage high school campus and all performances are
held in the 600 seat helene galen theatre.
one of the most sought-after joke-smiths in the entertainment industry, Bruce
vilanch has become a recognizable face in his own right, thanks to the featurelength
documentary “get Bruce!” (1999) and his one-time stint as a regular on
“hollywood squares” (1998 ), for which he also served as head writer. impressed
by his review of her cabaret performance in 1970, Bette midler hired him to
punch up her act where he gave birth to midler’s famed sophie tucker jokes. he
later moved to Los angeles where he wrote for variety shows like the original
“Donny and marie” and “the Brady Bunch hour” (both aBc) and provided
material for richard pryor, Lily tomlin and Joan rivers. he has maintained
his connection with midler through the years, working on such projects as the
feature “Divine madness” (1980) and the tv special “Bette midler--Diva Las
vegas” (hBo, 1997), as well as writing for her short-lived but lively sitcom,
“Bette!” (cBs, 2000 ).
he made his feature debut as a dress manufacturer in “mahogany’ (1975),
starring Diana ross, and also contributed material to her live act. vilanch began
contributing to the academy awards telecasts in 1989, collaborating with the
of Billy crystal, Whoopi goldberg and
David Letterman, and graduated to head writer
in 2000. mr. vilanch has also written for the
tony’s, the grammy’s and the emmy’s. he
made his Broadway debut in his one-man show
“Bruce vilanch: almost famous” in 2000 and in
2005 starred as edna turnblad in the musical
“hairspray” after playing the role for two years in
the show’s first national tour.
the musical theatre university student actors
includes amisha Bhandari (La Quinta) as tracy
turnblad, matthew hocutt (ctahedral city) as
Link Larkin, sasha chasen (rancho mirage) as
amber, robert garcis (coachella) as seaweed,
Leanna concepcion (highland) as penny and
a cast of thirty young singers and dancers.
vilanch and the mtu students are also joined
by Broadway veterans sal mistretta (orginal
Broadway “sweeney todd”, “evita” and “sunset
(Broadway’s “annie”) as velma von tussle
and gwen stewart (Broadway’s “rent”) as
motormouth maybelle.
hairspray is set in 1962 and change is in the air.
Baltimore’s tracy turnblad, a big girl with big hair
and an even bigger heart, has only one passionto
dance. she wins a spot on the local tv dance
program, “the corny collins show” and, overnight,
is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen
celebrity. But can a plus-size trendsetter in dance
and fashion vanquish the program’s reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link
Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her ‘do? only in hairspray!
hairspray is the winner of eight 2003 tony awards, including best musical, best actor,
best actress, best featured actor, best score, best book, best director, and best costume
Who ARE You?
Back in the early 1960s, I used to watch a popular television
game show called, To Tell the Truth, where three contestants
did their best to bluff a panel of four celebrity judges.
One of the contestants (who, according to the rules could
never lie) always had some sort of unusual occupation. The
other two were imposters (and could lie). At the end of every
show, the host would say, “Will the real ‘so and so’ please
stand up?” and we’d all find out who was telling the truth.
LIFE IS NOT REALLY THAT MUCH DIFFERENT
We’re all a bit like those celebrity judges on the show trying to figure out
what’s the truth…or to put it another way, which beliefs are going to get us
where we want to go. Because, let’s face it, the real rewards go to those
who have beliefs that support them in winning – with money or otherwise.
This famous game show line is where I got the idea for one of the chapter
titles in my newly released book, At Zero: The Quest for Miracles through
Ho’oponopono. (www.atzerobook.com/)
The chapter is called “Will the Real
Ho’oponopono Please Stand Up?” and reflects
one of the reasons I had for writing this book: to
clear up a number of misconceptions surrounding
this ancient healing method and to shed light on
how it evolved through the 21st century.
And it has evolved…just like the rest of life. (Seriously,
where would we be if the Old Testament
hadn’t given way to the New Testament?)
Nothing Stands Still
New revelations, new inspirations, new information is constantly revealing
itself moment to moment – if you’re open to it.
Being open means that sometimes you have to surrender what you know.
However….this does require faith and trust, two principles you’ll find
threaded throughout all my material.
In fact, it’s how I create all my material.
And Ho’oponopono has been invaluable in this regard because it helps
me distinguish the difference between my ego and true inspiration. It’s my
favorite method for transforming myself – cleaning and clearing any internal
beliefs that could potentially run interference as I move forward.
And, to me, the results speak for themselves.
I’ve been able to exponentially increase my productivity and, surprisingly,
increase my range of creative pursuits.
For example, in addition to writing books, I’ve become an award-nominated
musician (when a few years ago I couldn’t even play a chord).
Recently, I’ve even released weight and transformed my physical body –
going to an entirely new level of health and fitness (at the age of 60).
There’s simply no end to what you can achieve through your own personal
transformation – even in areas that have been persistent problems.
But first, you have to decide what your truth is…
HOW?
By consciously choosing between beliefs that work and those that merely
keep you “wandering in the desert” – beliefs that make you rich or those
that keep you struggling.
The real you…
You know, the one that’s just been waiting to be called to stand up.
Expect Miracles.
As a singer, he has a successful career with numerous solo
releases, which have earned accolades far and wide. His
songwriting skills have earned hits not only for himself, but
also for well-known artists like Chicago, Boz Scaggs, Peter
Cetera and Amy Grant, Neil Diamond and Al Jarreau.
Bobby’s timeless classic, “What You Won’t Do For Love”
has been recorded and sampled by more than 100 artists,
including rendition by Boys II Men. A sample of Bobby’s
song “Open Your Eyes” appeared in the Grammy nominated
platinum rap hit “The Light” by Common. All combined, Bobby’s
songs and samples have contributed to over 40 million
sales, while artists as diverse as Tupac Shakur, Michael
Bolton, Roberta Flack, Go West, Vanessa Williams and
Notorious B.I.G. have all paid tribute to the blue-eyed singer
in the slouch hat. Bobby’s classic song was sung by Elliot
Yamin during the final 3 round of American Idol 2006.
Major motion picture and television credits have brought
Bobby’s music to even broader audiences. His original
composition, “The Girl I Dream About” was included in Hillary
Duff’s film, “The Perfect Man”, and in Charlie Matthau’s
film, “Her Minor Thing” and in “Simone”, starring Al Pacino.
Previously, his rendition of “Beyond The Sea” was selected
by actor/director Joe Mantegna as the opening theme for
his directorial debut “Lakeboat.” The song fit so well with the
movie that Mantegna commissioned Bobby to compose an
original piece, “(Oh Boy!) You’ve Got It Made,” as the closing
theme. “Beyond The Sea,” along with “All The Way” and
“The Girl I Dream About” are also featured in the motion
picture “My First Mister” starring Albert Brooks and directed
by Christine Lahti. “I’ve Got The World On A String” was
used in “Hearts In Atlantis” starring Anthony Hopkins. “Luck
Be A Lady” is the featured track in the movie “The Cooler,”
starring William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, and Paul Sorvino.
Bobby’s songs and albums have been released in the USA,
Japan and throughout the globe, and have been enjoyed by
millions of fans.
Born in Manhattan and raised in Miami, Bobby came from a
show business family. His mother and father both sang and
were the hosts of one of the first musical variety programs
on television, “Suppertime.” Bobby grew up listening to
show tunes, the music of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole,
Tony Bennett, as well as The Beatles. These early influences
are prevalent in Bobby’s singing and songwriting.
Bobby chose a career in music at the tender age of 17.
He has devoted his entire life to song writing, recording,
performing and most of all making people happy. Bobby
has toured the USA and the globe for 40 years, bringing his
music to fans of all ages and backgrounds, and he continues
to do so.
HOW ARE MY CANDI WRAPPERS ???
I HOPE THIS ISSUE FINDS YOU ALL IN
GOOD SPIRITS.........
Imperial Court De San Diego:
Who will be the new Monarchs for Reign XLII I asked the candidates to give
us a brief on why they want to run and there vision if elected here is what
they said.
Candidate for Empress Miss Pearl:
"I have developed a deep admiration
and respect for the men a women of the
Imperial Court System. I have attended
Imperial Court events for many years
and through prayer and consultation with
friends and family, I have decided to run
for Empress 42 of The Imperial Court de
San Diego. I believe, if we all give, we all
receive and we all benefit by giving back
to our communities. As a child, I enjoyed
entertaining others and this joy took me all
the way to The Comedy Store in La Jolla
as The Best of San Diego and eventually to
season 2 of NBC’s America’s Got Talent.
One of the best aspects of the Imperial
Court System, they manage to raise
awareness and proceeds for great
causes while putting on some of the best
entertainment in our city. If elected, I want
to take this platform and begin advocacy for
important causes. I want our new team to
increase membership and mentor-ship of
the young men and women that are curious
about The Imperial Court system. I want us
to hit the reset button with the businesses in
our surrounding community and reintroduce them to the Imperial Court. We
will imbrace innovation, technology and uncoventional ways or raising money
so that we can do more those who need assistance. R.A.M. acronym stands
for Revenue, Awareness, Membership. Thank you and I am looking forward
to a great 2014 with the Imperial Court."
Candidate for Emperor Mr. Robert Rodriguez:
“Greetings fellow Monarchs,
Court Members, and San Diego
Community,
Candidate for Empress Miss Toni Saunders:
"I am the HELP !
Greetings Imperial Family,
Court and the San Diego Community,
I am announcing my candidacy
for the position of Empress XLII
of the Imperial Court de San
Diego.
I have been involved in the
court for over twenty-seven
years and have raised thousands
of dollars for the GLBT
community though many reigns.
I am proud of all the past reigning and current monarchs who
have come before me to serve their community and I'm looking
forward to join the legacy of Empresses of the Imperial Court
de San Diego. I will continue to reach out to all members of the
community and also to the past reigning monarchs who have
helped pave the way to this successful organization.
Many have asked why I have decided to run for this position . I
say to them that I believe in fundraising and will continue to support
any cause of this organization. I held this position in 1984
as Empress XV and raised thousands of dollars for the community.
Many of you know times have changed and fundraising is
much not as easy as in the past.
My vision for the Court is to continue to help those in need and
to see the FUN in FUNdraiaing continue to grow with fresh and
new ideas. I hope I can mentor our young court members of
today in order to carry on the many Nobel Deeds we have done
for over forty-one years, I ask for your support in making this
year one of the best ever. I encourage you all to remember that
I am "The Help" and would like your vote to reach this Dream. "
Well Candi Wrappers there you have it Our Three Candidates for
Reign XLII Best Candi Wishes to all Three.......
STEP DOWN OF REIGN XLI:
Reign XLI raised $80.000 Thousand Dollars for the many Programs of
the ICSD helping our Community, This has been a remarkable year and
I hope I have lived up to your exceptions. This was not an easy task but
with all your support it was able to be done. I thank the people of San
Diego you all gave me the vision for this Reign, Strengthen our community
and build bridges. “ Together we accomplished both!” My Slogan for this
Reign is “ A BRIGHTER FUTURE WHILE HONORING THE PAST”
SMILE YOUR ON CANDI CAMERA:
My Name is Robert Rodriguez,
Past Prince Royal and current Mr.
San Diego Eagle, I would like to
announce my cadency with the
Imperial Court de San Diego.
I have been involved with the
Imperial Court de San Diego since
1999 when I first moved here from
Texas. I have put in countless
of hours and helped raise many
thousands of dollars for our LGBT
community and community at
large.
I am proud of all our past and current Monarchs who have come before
me to serve their community. I’ve looked up to so many of you and that
is why I am looking forward to join the legacy of being an Emperor of the
ICSD. I will continue to work and reach out to all past Monarchs, Princes
and Princess Royal, members of the community, to help pave the way to
this successful organization. Some may ask, why have I decided to run for
this position?” to them I answer I love what we do for the LGBT, for the
children and families that are less fortunate, I love giving back I gave
back not because I have everything, but because I didn’t have anything
when I was young “I want to help make a difference.
As many of you know times have changed and raising funds is much
harder. My Vision for the Court is to continue to help those in need from all
our communities weather it’s the LGBT Leather community Rodeo, Bears,
and community at large by putting fun back in FUNdraising through different
events that are not necessarily in a bar or night club but outdoors too. I am
dedicated loyal hard working man, and am willing and ready to work for you
and our community’
I am seeking your support in helping my dream become a reality. I wish to
mentor our younger generation our court members past present and future
to help carry on the tradition of the Nobel Deeds we as the Imperial Court
de San Diego have done for the past 40 plus years.
XLI Imperial Court Raised over $80,000.00
39
The year reign of Empress XLI Candi Samples
and the Imperial Court de San Diego will come
to an end on February 8, 2014 at the Lafayette
Hotel when the new Emperor and Empress will
be elected and crowned.
The Imperial Court, Empress XLI Candi Samples
and the Board of Directors are responsible for
over $80,000 being given out to numerous
non-profit charities and causes. The Imperial
Court de San Diego is probably the oldest gay
organization having begun to be organized in
1972 and it's first Coronation Ball being held in
1973.
The San Diego chapter is a member of the
International Court System of the U.S.A.,
Canada and Mexico which now has over 68
cities within the three nations.
The International Court System was founded
by the late Jose Julio Sarria who reigned
over 40 years until 2007 when San Diego
City Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez
(AKA: the Queen Mother of the Americas)
succeeded Sarria as the International Chair/
Executive Director and absolute monarch of
the court system.
The Imperial Court de San Diego has played
a major pioneering role in the establishment
of the GLBT Community of San Diego. The
Imperial Court provided seed money for such
organizations as the San Diego LGBT Center,
San Diego Pride, AIDS Walk, Mama's Kitchen,
Being Alive to name a few.
The XLI Imperial Court has distributed the
over $80,000 through many of their court
programs such as: Eddie Conlon Youth Fund,
Harvey Milk/ Nicole Murray Ramirez Student
Scholarship Fund (founded in 1979), the
Toni Atkins Lesbian Health Fund, the
Tijuana AIDS Fund, the Ben F. Dillingham
Community Grant, the Scott Carlson
Community Thanksgiving Dinner, the
Community Children's Easter Egg hunt, the
Toys for Kids Drive (founded in 1975). It is
important to note that no Imperial Court
Chapter has ever had a paid staff or office.
This GLBT organization is all volunteer.
"The annual success of the Imperial Court
would not happen without the countless
volunteers and donors": stated City
Commissioner Nicole Murray Ramirez.
"For over 40 years the Imperial Court has
been able to count on the generosity of our
bars, businesses and community members
..... we are and always will be grateful for
such a supportive community. "
San Diego first elected Emperor I is a local
businessman Omar Lorey. Empress I Tawny
Tann succumbed to AIDS. " Emperor I
Omar and Empress II Toby will be special
guest along with Mayor Todd Gloria at our
upcoming 42nd Annual Coronation Ball",
stated court President Allan Spyere. "The
entire community is welcome to attend and
celebrate another year of noble deeds".
The three candidates for the upcoming XLII
Reign are Robert Rodriguez for Emperor
and Miss Pearl and Toni Saunders for
Empress. Joins us on February 8,2014
5:00 pm at the Lafayette Hotel, 2223
Zombie-Fu Mashup Makes World Premiere
LAS VEGAS - Table 8 Productions in association with Off-Strip Productions
presents the madcap mashup Anton Chekhov’s “Cherry Orchard of the
Living Dead, written and directed by Troy Heard. The world premiere
comedy’s limited run begins Friday, February 21, 2014, at the Onyx Theatre
in Commercial Center and plays through March 9. This production is made
possible in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National
Endowment for the Arts.
The peripatetic Madame Ranevskaya has returned to her ancestral
Russian home following yet another farewell tour to find her life turned
upside down. Instead of marrying off her nubile daughter Masha to the
local scholar, she’s boarding up windows and grabbing pistols to ward off
the coming onslaught of resurrected zombie serfs. Questions abound: will
Gregorovitch Samsonovsky rescue the last two bottles of vodka? Will the
elderly servant Anfisa finally be able to pour a decent cup of tea? And what
IS that smell emanating from the barn? Only Pepito the chihuahua knows
for sure...
“Chekhov’s characters are essentially split into two groups: victims and
survivors,” says writer/director Heard. “They’re either at the end of their
ropes or trying to escape their circumstances. From The Seagull to Uncle
Vanya, all these people with really long Russian names are trying to make
it through their own personal hardships. That being said, it wasn’t much of a
stretch to imagine them existing in the world of The Walking Dead.”
“I actually wrote the first draft a few years ago, but got sidetracked with
other directing projects. For the hell of it, I pulled it out and applied for a
Nevada Arts Council grant for a premiere production, never expecting them
to give money to my crazy Russian Lit-slash- George Romero mashup.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised when the grant came through.”
Performances of Anton Chekhov’s “Cherry Orchard of the Living Dead”
will be Thursdays through Saturdays, February 21 - March 9 at 8 pm with
Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Tickets are $15.00 and are available through the
Onyx Box Office or on www.onyxtheatre.com. Performances will be at the
Onyx Theatre, located at 953 E. Sahara Ave. #16 in Commercial Center,
Las Vegas, NV.
The Onyx Theatre is thrilled to be bringing Broadway to Las Vegas, and
we are committed to provide high-quality entertainment at affordable ticket
prices. We are located inside Commercial Center at 953 East Sahara
